Other than episode reviews and general squee about SG-1, the contents of this journal generally fall into one of three categories: fic recs, meta, and my own fic.
(Some links lead to Dreamwidth. Others lead to LJ.)
( fic recs )
( meta )
( fic )
This post gets revised constantly.
I've finally got internet access again, after nearly a week incommunicado. So before I plow through 80-odd e-mails, I want to remind you all that there are six days left before SG-1 Gen Fic Day on Monday, January 30th, which will be including Cam Alphabet Soup!
Don't forget that all gen SG-1 fic will be welcomed, whether or not it's Cam-centric. Alphabet Soup authors, your fics do have to be Cam-centric :) but they need only be 100 words, although we'll very happily take longer stories too! Make sure your fic meets the criteria and send a copy to me at sg1.fig@gmail.com so I can get it into the anthology.
Questions? Problems? Gnashing of teeth? Gloating? Comment here!

It's three weeks until SG-1 Gen Fic Day and Cam Alphabet Soup!
Soup cooks, I hope your fics are nicely simmering. I've, er, thought about mine. Yeah, that's it. :) Don't forget that the minimum word count is 100, but there is no maximum count. Stories can be e-mailed to me at sg1.fig@gmail.com at any time between now and then, but don't post your fic online until SG-1 Gen Fic Day! For more details, check out the instructions post.
How are you all doing with your stories? If you want to complain or crow or anything in between, leave a comment below! And if you've got any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

I don't always realize how little I'm posting here on my own journal, because I make at least eight posts a month over at
figs_sg1_rec. So I'm a little surprised to see how quiet it's been here!
In the fic department, there's just the short Guidance, which is early season Teal'c and his friendship with Jack. Under 800 words, rated G.
In the fandom department, the ingredients have been assembled for our upcoming Cam Alphabet Soup on the next SG-1 Gen Fic Day, at the end of January. More gen fic, whee!
Other than that, it's just the recs. You all know the drill by now: All the fics were recced at
stargateficrec and archived at
figs_sg1_rec. The Master List of SG-1 fic recs is fully current.

sg1genrecs has been running a female friendship theme for over six weeks, but only three stories have been recced. I'll be putting up a new theme next week (that is, year), so if you've got a good female friendship fic to rec, please share it!

I am happy to report that we have 26 cooks signed up for Cam Alphabet Soup! I bid an especially warm welcome to our new participants:
magibrain,
rinkafic,
camshaft22,
stringertheory,
skieswideopen,
staranise,
gingasaur,
kayim, and
madders_ahatter. Nine new authors puts our grand total of contributors up to 112. Is SG-1 fandom not awesome? :)
I look forward to seeing all the gen Cam fic, come January 30th! Don't forget that the minimum word count is 100, but there is no maximum count. Item the first: there are still four letters left to claim for Cam Alphabet Soup. If you are interested in writing 100 words (or more!) of gen fic on the topic of Cam by January 30, go to this post and sign up!
Item the second: this week,
redial_the_gate did The Shroud. I was personally a bit disappointed when the ep originally aired that so many people wrote non-gen ep tags, but that's my problem. :) Redial, however, is all-inclusive, and I'm very surprised to see that no one has bothered linking to the many fanworks -- with the exception of
sg1danny, who posted some stunning artwork. So if you've written a fic or done a vid or posted meta or created art or anything else related to The Shroud, please drop a link at the fanworks entry so others can enjoy it, too.
Item the second: this week,
It's time to start preparing the ingredients for our twelfth Alphabet Soup!
It all started back in March 2008, when we Defined Sam from A to Z in honor of
abyssinia4077's birthday. Since then, we're served ten more Alphabet Soups with over one hundred different chefs, in a variety of flavors: Sam, Daniel, Teal'c, George, Jack, Janet, Jacob, Vala, Jonas, Team, and Crossover. Now, for our twelfth rendition, we'll be making Cam Alphabet Soup in honor of the last SG-1 member to be featured, for January 30th and the celebration of SG-1 Gen Fic Day. Here's your chance to claim a letter.
( How Alphabet Soups work )
There are only four rules: your fic must be at least 100 words, although there is no maximum limit; it must be about Cameron Mitchell; the fic must be canon compliant, although it does not have to reference canon specifically and may be set in pre-series or future eras; and it should be gen. This is part of SG-1 Gen Fic Day, after all. :)
An author is welcome to mention canon relationships - for example, a fic that features Cam's pre-series relationship with Amy Vanderbilt, or in which Teal'c introduces Cam to Ishta, would be fine. :) But no romance, please, and no AUs or alternate timelines. If in doubt, feel free to ask.
Please spread the word - I'm always delighted to have new authors join us (just as I'm ecstatic when loyal regulars join us for yet another round.) And if you're a newcomer signing up, make sure to mention it so I can welcome you properly. :)
Hope to see you signing up!

Because
redial_the_gate is more than halfway through S10 and I really want to actually, y'know, watch the entire series before the comm ends.
When S10 was first airing, I wasn't enjoying it much. I did start liking it more as the season progressed, but I didn't care much for Cam and Vala and actively disliked Landry. (Still don't like Landry much at all, although I've enjoyed the way some fans write him.) So since I wasn't home when Insiders and Uninvited first aired and I had no online access, I didn't make a particular effort to watch them. I knew Daniel wouldn't be there, and the transcripts left me really cold. On the other hand, even the worst eps (Family Ties, I'm looking at you) have at least one redeeming scene, so... :)
I've pulled out my DVDs, and here is Insiders. I go into this knowing that the Ba'al storyline (which I HATE) pops up again, that Barrett shows up and Sam caves, and that the redeeming scene is most likely Vala trying to arm-wrestle Teal'c. No proper review, just my reactions whenever I hit the pause button. Onwards!
( Insiders )
Bottom line: hate the Ba'als. Hate what this ep did to Sam. Precious little to redeem the ep. I need to go watch some classic SG-1, now.

SG-1 Gen Fic Day and Cam Alphabet Soup will be taking place on Monday, January 30th. We'll have signups sometime later this week, but in the meantime, we need some good prompts to help inspire our Soup writers.
Please comment with one-word prompts for Cameron Mitchell. These can be specifically related to the character (memory, flying, fanboy, bugs, Kansas, macaroon) or simply a word that you think will inspire a good ficlet (acorn, velcro, cellphone, orange). You are not making any kind of commitment by suggesting prompts -- you are simply helping create a springboard for ideas. :)
In a few days, I'll collate all the suggestions and arrange them in alphabetical order for the signup post. The more prompts, the merrier!

ratcreature is offering drawbles -- hand-drawn doodles. Despite her claims that these quick sketches aren't really good for fanfic illustrations, I asked for crack!SG-1 from The Daniel Jackson Theory of Hairy Relativity and got... well, go check out the fic and glee together with me, will you? :)
Thank you,
ratcreature! You have totally made my day. :)

...Anyone else notice the last Gen Fic Day and Alphabet Soup was back in February?
I mean, yes, I deliberately skipped the one that would've been in August or so because the
sg1friendathon was an awesome success and we got 35 gen fics out of it (
stringertheory, I am looking gleefully at you). And November is no time for it with nanowrimo, and December is no time for it with Yuletide frenzy. But only one Gen Fic Day this calendar year? I am clearly slipping!
Then there are the Alphabet Soups. We've done most of the team (and Team, whee!), we've done George and Janet and Jacob, and we've even done crossovers. What we haven't yet done is a Soup for Cameron Mitchell, and even if S9-10 will never be my favorite seasons, the guy who led the team for two years deserves a little more (gen) love.
So... who's up for it?
And when?
There's a poll over at LJ (sorry, I can't do it here) to gauge interest in general and determine timing. You're not committing yourself to anything by responding to the poll, and even if you're just an interested potential reader, I'd appreciate your input. :)

Since I have a personal rule of reccing one author per category per month (except for the rarer friendship/characters), I can't rec
stringertheory's fabulous Fighting Dirty over at
stargateficrec just now. But I can rec it here! :)
So if you're in the mood for some gen classic teamy goodness (everyone not surprised that this was a request of mine at the Fall Fandom Free-For-All, raise your hand) that includes team off-world, lots of mud, sparkling dialogue, and Teal'c pwnage, go and read Fighting Dirty right now. I challenge you to finish without a smile on your face!

penknife for the Fall Fandom Free-For-All. She asked for Jack and Teal'c friendship, maybe in one of the early seasons, especially something that shows the ways they understand each other. Hope you'll like this, Penknife. :)
Summary: O'Neill's attitudes and preferences suit Teal'c best. Set in early S1, with very minor spoilers for Enemy Within. 786 words. Rated G.

It's been a quiet two months here in Figland -- mostly due to Tishrei, really -- so I don't even need to bother with a cut except for the recs!
In fandom,
redial_the_gate is nearly halfway through Season 10. It's been a wonderful ride so far, and if you haven't stepped through the Gate with us yet, feel free to join us!
The
sg1friendathon, which boasted over 35 gen friendship fics in August, had a Ficathon Frenzy in the first week of September. You can find links to all 13 of those here.
I posted two fics in September:
Your Regularly Scheduled Programming. Sam and Teal'c are used to being the adults on SG-1, complete with background The Jack and Daniel Show. Rated G.
Five Crossovers That Didn't Happen to SG-1. Five crossovers that didn't happen to SG-1 because they traveled in time to 1969 instead of some other era in Earth's past (or future). The crossovers aren't labeled, because it's more fun to guess :) but they've all been identified in the comments! Rated PG.
Now for the recs!

I place the blame for my following Real Life solely on
aurora_novarum's shoulders. I believe she is quite smug about it. :)
Anyway, while still playing catch-up to what I missed while I was offline, I discovered that Real Life has begun what promises to be a truly hilarious Stargate arc. You don't have to follow the comic to enjoy this; it's enough to know that Tony is an evil genius and that the entrance to his underground lair is in Greg's house. Start here and just keep reading!

smilebackwards filled one of my Fall Fandom Free-For-All requests for Sha're fic with the utterly fabulous Five Lies Sha're Told, which starts with her childhood and spans her rejection of Ra to her marriage with Daniel and her suffering as Amaunet's host. So, so GOOD. Go read, and savor!

Starting tomorrow, I'll be offline for two weeks, from the week of Rosh Hashanah (starting next Thursday) until after Yom Kippur. So I will take the opportunity now to wish a Shana Tova to all my wonderful fandom friends. :) Let's hope that 5752 is a year of health and happiness.
And an extra signal boost, if you haven't seen it yet:
oxoniensis is hosting the Fall Fandom Free-For-All again this year. Here's your chance to post some fandom requests of your own and add fandom squee for others at the same time! My own wish list is here, and I hope that lots more SG-1 fans will post their own requests, too.
And an extra signal boost, if you haven't seen it yet:
Author's note: I'm not sure where this one came from, but here are five crossovers, based on the premise that the team traveled to some other era when the solar flare sent them through time in 1969. I haven't identified the fandoms because I thought it would be more fun for you all to try and guess. :) All encounters take place on Earth, although with one of these, you might argue the point. The first person to guess a specific fandom gets to prompt me for the (gen) ficlet of their choice, although I make no promises as to when their ficlet will get written. One fandom per customer, please! If some of these prove too hard to identify, I'll post some hints in a separate entry.
Summary: Five crossovers that didn't happen to SG-1 because they traveled in time to 1969 instead of some other era in Earth's past (or future).. About 2,950 words. Rated PG.
