With many, many thanks to those of you who got your stories up on time... :)

Twenty Kidfic Alphabet Soup fics are up. Two more authors have been in touch to tell me their stories should be up shortly. The other four have been e-mailed or PM'd and will hopefully get back to me sooner rather than later.

After that, coding time!

In the meantime, feel free to comment here or at the official SG-1 Gen Fic Day entry with links to old and new fics or recs, whether or not they're kidfic. Just make sure they're gen. ;)

Backup contribution to Kidfic Alphabet Soup! Also, I believe this is the first time I have actually had Jack use a certain expression. It certainly seemed to fit this time.

Five times SG-1 had to accept an unusual perspective of childhood and adulthood. Jack POV, set in Seasons 1 & 2. Includes detailed spoilers for Brief Candle, the Nox, and Thor's Chariot. 2,250 words. Rated PG-13 for certain details involving Brief Candle.

A contribution to Kidfic Alphabet Soup. As usual, Daniel took control and went in unexpected directions. He's good at that. :) This came out as much meta-ish as fic-ish, I think.

Summary: Few people expect the former First Prime to be so good with children, but SG-1 knows that Teal'c has vast and unexpected depths. A Daniel retrospective on a friend. References various episodes throughout the series (mostly those with kids). 1,710 words. Rated PG.

Happy SG-1 Gen Fic Day, everybody!

Comment below with links to new fic, older fic, flashfic, recs, self-recs, meta, picspam, icons, vids, and general squee - anything at all, as long as it's gen and related to SG-1.

The theme of the day is kidfic, including a piping-hot serving of Kidfic Alphabet Soup (perfect for late November!), but any gen work that isn't kidfic is more than welcomed, too.

Soup authors, this is where you should leave a link to your story. If you haven't yet sent me a copy of your story and your TOC entry, please do so.

We are still missing a few letters of Soup, so if you feel like dashing off at least 100 words of gen kidfic (in any definition thereof), comment below for that, too, and I will happily PM you a letter.

Here's to kids. And kidfic. And fic. And gen. And SG-1. :D

Tomorrow we will be celebrating SG-1 Gen Fic Day, complete with Kidfic Alphabet Soup!

Well, I say "complete," but we are a few authors short. So if you feel like dashing off at least 100 words of gen kidfic for tomorrow (or the day after), please comment either at LJ or DW to get a letter.

If you are a Soup author and never got your letter, or if you already sent me your story and I have not replied to acknowledge receipt, please let me know IMMEDIATELY. Thanks!

Welcome to the fifth installment of my tenth anniversary reccing posts! Follow the tag if you've missed the previous entries.

(I was going to do all ten in July. HA HA HA.)

Here are twelve of my favorite stories (I tried, but couldn't keep it down to ten!) recced in the twelve-month period between April 2010 and March 2011. I tried to avoid using an author I've used in previous posts, and I am also constrained by stories that have been lost to the ether with their websites. Feel free to browse through [personal profile] figs_sg1_rec for more goodies.

To Dance on the Floor in the Round, by Pepper )

Faith in Royalty (or Lack Thereof), by Gingasaur )

What Vala and Teal'c do for fun when the rest of SG-1 is not around, by Ziparumpazoo )

What Must Be Done, by Aces )

Incredible Luck, Annoying Charm, by Ana )

Things that Go Bump, by KerrAvonsen )

The To-Do List, by Rachel500 )

Mafdet, Slayer of Serpents, by Sqbr )

Revisionist History, by Penknife )

X Marks the Spot, by MacBeth )

Reaching Past the Sky, by Amilyn )

Act of Contrition, by Mad Maudlin )

I wrote 21 fics in 2010, but all of them were short. Here are three of them, two humorous and one angsty:

Shake Vigorously for Best Results. When the team comes under attack, Sam uses any weapons she can get.

Where the Future Is Being Made Today. They were hoping to meet the Furlings. It would be nice to know which one was which. Shameless crackfic crossover with The Muppet Show.

Well Met at Midnight. Jonas Quinn dreams of Daniel Jackson, or maybe he doesn't.

Remember, I welcome more gen recs in the comments, whether it's another author's story or your own.

...Except that we still are missing authors for multiple letters.

Kidfic was voted as one of the most popular options, so I'm hoping there are a few authors out there willing to take a letter and write at least 100 words of gen fic that are somehow related to kids. This can be canon children (like Cassie or Charlie), pre-series stories featuring a character as a child, someone interacting with an original character who is a child, or "downsizing" fic. All those qualify, so if you're interested, please comment at either LJ or DW and get a letter.

I've already received two submissions; one is classic downsizing, and the other is pre-series. I'm looking forward to lots of variety!

If you're already writing a Soup fic and you're interested in second helpings, you can comment and get a second letter, too.

Here's to more gen fic, in any flavor. :)

Kidfic Alphabet Soup is scheduled for the end of the month, but we still don't have anywhere near enough cooks yet. You can sign up on LJ or DW, as you prefer. Signal boosts are appreciated, too!

"Kidfic" has so many connotations, doesn't it? Many people's minds instantly leap to the "downsizing" type of fic, and if that's your taste, that's fine. :) But there are also other types. Here's one of a very different flavor, as a way to offer an appetizer for the Soup. (Also, a way to do some WRITING for a change, okay. Plus a little distraction from RL, which I think a lot of us need right now.) It didn't go where I expected, but eh, that's par for the course when I'm writing SG-1. So be warned of an unexpected dose of Jack angst ahead. Oh, and that bingo card that I've been trying to fill for more than two years now? This should fit nicely in Ambiguous.

Summary: Appearances can be deceiving, as the team knows all too well. ~1,200 words. PG.

Who's up for another round of SG-1 Alphabet Soup? :)

This will be our 22nd round, and the theme, by popular vote, is Kidfic. The following types of stories qualify:

* "downsizing" fic, in which one or more characters are technologically hand-waved into children (temporarily or permanently, with or without their adult memories)

* stories set pre-series, featuring any SG-1 character during a time when they were actually, y'know, kids

* stories featuring children within the SG-1 universe; these can be canonical [Cassie, Loran, Ry'ac, Charlie (the original), Charlie (the Reetou), Shifu, or even young!Adria] or original

The following types of fic DO NOT qualify:

* next-gen featuring the children of any major character that is not canon. A story featuring an adult Cassie training Janet Wells as a member of a new SG-1 team would be fine, but stories featuring Sam and Jack's (or Vala and Daniel's) children are not.

What about alternative timelines or AU fic, in which a character was always a child to begin with? I'm willing to consider those, but the decision will be made on a case-by-case basis, and I get to be arbitrary about it. :) So please discuss it with me before you start writing!

Your story may include any character and any era (pre-series, post-series, early season, late season, whatever), as long as it's gen, related to SG-1, and fits our theme. We've had somewhere along the lines of 140 different authors contributing over the years, but whether you're a dedicated regular, an occasional dabbler, or a brand new chef, your participation is more than welcome!

This is how it works: comment below to sign up. By commenting, you are committing yourself to writing at least 100 words of gen kidfic by November 28th. In the past, signing up included claiming a letter of the alphabet; this time, I will PM you with a randomly assigned letter.

On November 28th, comment with a link to your fic in the SG-1 Gen Fic Day post, using the title as the subject of your comment (A is for Adria, D is for Developments, W is for What Just Happened, or whatever). Send me a copy by e-mail and your TOC template as well, as soon as they're ready. When all the letters have been submitted, a master post for the anthology will be posted, complete with the detailed table of contents.

For more detailed instructions of the posting process, click here. Even if you've cooked Soup before, please double-check; the detailed instructions have been edited over the years.

There are only four rules: your fic must be at least 100 words, although there is no maximum limit; it must be some kind of kidfic, however you choose to interpret the theme; the fic should be canon compliant, although it does not have to reference canon specifically and may be set in pre-series or future eras; and it should be gen. This is part of SG-1 Gen Fic Day, after all. :) You may write about any character, including original ones, that fit these criteria. You may mention canon ships - for example, Teal'c/Drey'auc or Jack/Sara - but no romance, please, and no sneaking in references to your favorite non-canon ship. If in doubt, feel free to ask.

Please spread the word - I'm always delighted to have new authors join us (just as I'm ecstatic when loyal regulars join us for yet another round.) Signal boosts are always appreciated! And if you're a newcomer signing up, make sure to mention it so I can welcome you properly. With so many different authors over the years, I tend to lose track...

I am immensely grateful to the few regular reccers who come back month after month after month, as well as the semi-regulars. The comm would have folded up and vanished without them. But many, if not most, of these regulars are SGA fans. (sallymn is both, heh.) More power to them, natch, but SG-1 needs some love (gen or otherwise) too!

The rules for reccing at stargateficrec have relaxed substantially: only two recs required per month, and if a story was recced in a category more than five years ago, it's okay to rec it again.

FAQ for reccing is here. Signups for September - only two volunteers so far, as of this posting, both SGA fans - is at this link. It would be lovely to see more SG-1 recs next month! I rarely have time for more than two myself, and hey, I've read those stories already... :)

(yes that was a bad joke)

Feel free to comment here with recs for fic about Sam's cat. Or the Tollan. Or reread that fic in which Daniel grumbles about Schrodinger's archeologist. Or any kind of SG-1 squee, really. :D

Welcome to the fourth installment of my tenth anniversary reccing posts! Follow the tag if you've missed the previous entries.

Once again, I've kept it down (with difficulty) to ten recs for the twelve month period from April 2009-March 2010. There are many wonderful stories, and many authors I don't want to rec twice, so feel free to browse [personal profile] figs_sg1_rec for more!

Singing Down the Moon, by Butterfly )

Pearl in the Shell, by Matt )

One Dimension Removed, by Tafkar )

Stockholm Syndrome, by Annerb )

The Other Side of the Time Loop, by Yvi )

Just a Scientist, by Aurora Novarum )

Five People (or Beings) Who Inhabit the SGC, by Holdouttrout )

The Interview, by SG_Betty )

With the Dying, by Dira Sudis )

The Only Winning Move, by Synecdochic )

Yes, I was still writing a lot back then, even if it was all pretty short... 35 stories that clocked in at about 30,000 words. Here are some links to stories I wrote back in 2009:

Line in the Sand. Sha'uri takes the first steps on the road that will lead to Ra's destruction. This ended up a series of sorts, with both prequel and sequel.

Attitude of the Knife. Wonder Twins in classic geek mode. It's irritating when Jack can't tell if they're doing it to be annoying or just because they're geeks.

Taking Tally. SG-1 doesn't always win. It's a good thing they have each other to help pick up the pieces.

I'd love to see more gen recs in the comments, whether they're your own stories or belong to your favorite author!

Welcome to the third installment of my tenth anniversary reccing posts! Follow the tag if you've missed the previous entries.

Below is a selection of recs during the 12-month period from April 2008-March 2009. I did my best not to rec a story from an author who has already been featured, which meant skipping a lot of favorites...

I kept it down to ten this time. If you want more, feel free to explore [personal profile] figs_sg1_rec's archive. There's lots there, I assure you. :)

One Forgotten Day, by Vain_glorious )

Girls (and Jaffa) Do Not Fight Fair, by Kalquessa )

Blood and Wires, by Laura Maxwell )

Learning Curve... Tilt?, by Lokei )

Beside me, singing in the wilderness, by Rigel )

Stories of Gods and Heroes, by Bratfarrar )

Determination, by Beatrice Otter )

Daniel of Abydos, by Nightspear )

As Long As It Takes, by Gayalondiel )

The God of Poets Has Two Hands, by Minxy )

I wrote 27 (!) fics in 2008, although most of them were short. Here are two of them, one angsty and one fluffy:

'Tween Weft and Warp: angst and AUs abound, as Teal'c and Daniel struggle to find the right answers in the wake of FIAD.

U is for Undomesticated Equines, a Jack and Teal'c friendship ep tag for Point of No Return.

Remember, I welcome more gen recs below, whether it's another author's story or your own.

Welcome to the second installment of my tenth anniversary reccing posts! Follow the tag if you've missed the previous entries.

Once again, I had to struggle to keep this down to a manageable number. I had already decided to refrain from including the same author twice - or trying, anyway - but that didn't help as much as I thought it would, although it did mean not choosing several favorites!

I find it interesting to see my own learning curve, so to speak. When I first started reccing, the "why this must be read" section was paragraphs long, often summarizing the story. Over time, I shortened both the excerpts I included as well as my explanation of why I thought the fic was worth reading. A reccer should tempt and tantalize, not give a full review!

Since I first started writing SG-1 fic myself in early 2007, I have also decided to shamelessly rec one or two stories per calendar year of my own writing. :)

Remember, I welcome more gen recs below, whether it's another author's story or your own.

A Million Years Into the Sky, by Niamaea )

Scotoma, by Rydra Wong )

Teal'c's Five Favorite Board Games, by Paian )

In Threes, by Nanda (PG) )

When Your Job Description... Is a Total Lie, by Madelyn )

Never Fully Dressed Without a Smile, by Julie (PG-13) )

Paper, Scissors, Yak, by Grav )

Look to the Heavens and Number the Stars, by Minervacat (PG-13) )

Penmanship, by Salieri )

The Art of the Deal, by Littera Abactor (PG-13) )

Ciphers, by Destina )

Setting Up House series, by Redbyrd )

Till Human Voices Wake Us, by Ivorygates )

Best Laid Plans, by Emily )

And here are two of my own stories from this time period, one angsty and one fluffy:

In Search of Possibilities, parts one, two, and three. ~22,000 words. PG. Sam and Daniel (and team), post Double Jeopardy. "Are we still so far from real to you?" When a mission turns disastrous, Sam and Daniel get the chance to find out. Lots of drama and angst, with hope at the end.

SG-1, Ninja Style. ~2,300 words. PG. Team. Teal’c. Ninjas! Aftermath to The Serpent's Lair.

I was amazingly prolific back then, both in terms of writing and reccing. Eh, I was also a little younger. ;)

So, what with the sheer happy hecticness of RL (did I mention that daughter #2 is getting married?), I managed to miss a rather significant anniversary: April 2nd marks ten years that I have been reccing SG-1 gen fic. That's over 1,000 recs, of which only 27 are not gen. Because, in case you didn't know, SG-1 fandom is pretty awesome. :)

To celebrate, I plan to make ten different posts, re-reccing some personal favorites from each 12-month period. Sadly, many of my personal favorites are no longer available online, whether it's an abandoned personal website or the loss of stargate.fan (sigh). OTOH, many of my favorites have been rescued from 404 limbo (whatever my problems with AO3, it's a great resource in that respect!). If I was intelligent, of course, I would update the links on [personal profile] figs_sg1_rec, but... well.

I hope that I will get all ten posts done during July, but since I have two unfinished series that are still lingering years after their projected date of completion, I would strongly advise anyone against holding their breath.

I hope you all enjoy this stroll down memory lane, and I would be delighted to see extra recs to your favorite gen fics added below - even if the author in question is yourself. :) And if I've messed up any links below, please comment so I can fix it.

Here's a sampling of some recs that were made during my first year of reccing, from April 2006 to March 2007. You will note that there is a very heavy emphasis on Jack and Daniel friendship at this point; that's what first drew me into Stargate, after all. Also, wow was it hard to restrict it to as few as I did. There are 16 fics below, and I had to be ruthless to trim it down. There were months in 2006 when I was reccing over twenty fics at a time! Ah, for the youthful enthusiasm (and energy) of a decade ago...

Lost in Translation, by Vathara )

It's up, it's good! Wheee!

To recap: Epistolary Alpahbet Soup is here. DW TOC is here. LJ TOC is here.

I will verrrry slowly go through the Soup and add more hyperlinks, but for now, everything ought to be more or less accurate. Again, I would deeply appreciate it if each author would take the time to check over the fic, the links, the html, etc. I will happily change anything, no matter how minor.

Thanks again for participating!

Welcome to the table of contents for Epistolary Alphabet Soup!

My thanks to the 21 authors who made Epistolary Soup a reality: Annieb, Antonomasia09, Carlyn7685, Eilidh, Fig Newton, Gategremlyn, Goddess47, Immertreu, Izhilzha, Jb, Jedibuttercup, Madders_ahatter, Magistrate, SallyMn, Solstice0612, Splash the Cat, Tallulah Rasa, Thothmes, Topazowl, Traycer, and Wonderland. A warm welcome to our new cook, Carlyn! An appreciate tip of the ladle to our regular contributors. And an extra thanks to Antonomasia09, Goddess47, Madders_ahatter, Solstice, and Topazowl for their multiple contributions!

I can't even put a word count on our Soup, as we've got everything from epic-length fics to Twitter-fests, crossword puzzles, and hieroglyphics. Ratings range from G to PG. Expect spoilers throughout the series, and heed individual warnings for the fics.

This table of contents lists each individual story in the anthology with a detailed story and excerpt. You can follow the links to the individual author's website, or jump to that story in the complete anthology.

The TOC isn't ready yet, but the Soup itself is finally posted! You'll find the complete anthology here.

Despite my best efforts, I'm pretty sure I messed up some people's formatting (you especially, Thothmes). So please, authors, take a few minutes to scan through your contribution and see if anything is drastically off. Or even a minor error - I'll be happy to fix those, too.

I'll get the TOC done ASAP, but meanwhile, enjoy!
