Happy SG-1 Gen Fic Day!

Not sure what I'm talking about? Take a look at previous round-ups for Gen Fic Days and Alphabet Soups.

Comment here with links to new fic, older fic, recs, meta, picspam, icons, vids - anything, as long as it's gen and related to SG-1. Shameless self-promotion is cheerfully encouraged! The theme of the day is epistolary, although fanworks can involve any subject.

If you're an Epistolary Alphabet Soup contributor, this is where you post links to your story. If you're unsure of procedure, please take a quick look here. Don't forget to e-mail me a copy of the story and a filled-out TOC entry, too.

On Tuesday (or Wednesday, depending), I'll post a round-up of all links and (hopefully) the complete anthology of Epistolary Alphabet Soup, although that might take an extra day or two.

If you missed the opportunity to contribute and you'd like to join in the fun, there are still some letters left to claim. Go here to snag a letter. And if you're not an epistolary fan, any new ficlet you care to submit will be happily welcomed as part of general Gen Fic Day, too!

So, remember that thing we have this coming Monday? The Soup? Consider yourselves poked. :)

An author or three has mentioned to me that they're looking for a beta. I can't volunteer such services myself right now, but please comment here (or on LJ) if you can do beta reading for Soup fics. And hey, if you're specifically looking for a beta, feel free to comment here, too!

Pirates of Penance jokes aside, we go live on February 29th with SG-1 Gen Fic Day and Epistolary Alphabet Soup! I've already gotten a few entries (THANK YOU) and I eagerly await the rest. Remember to send me a copy of your story (text with HTML tags is easiest for me, but any format will do) and your template for the table of contents. You can read the details here.

As of today, we are sadly still three letters short for a complete Soup. So if you've ever had vague thoughts of writing at least 100 words of epistolary gen fic, seize the moment! And if you'd like to write but don't care for epistolary mode, any fic will be welcome on Gen Fic Day, so as long as it's gen and related to SG-1. :)

Back home and still intensely jet-lagged, but YAY SOUP is coming! We've got two and a half weeks. How's everyone doing with their stories? Brag, bemoan, beseech, or whatever B word of your choice fits here in the comments! :)

For myself, I have settled on some choice angst, both of the Daniel (and Sha're) variety and a Jaffa OC who will hopefully work out well. Not that I've actually typed out a single word, but...

We are still actually two letters short at the Episotolary Alphabet Soup. One will go to my own fic, and one lovely author has volunteered to write a backup, but experience strongly recommends that we have 26 separate authors signed up if we want to have a completed anthology in a reasonable timeframe. So who's up to at least 100 words of gen fic that is somehow epistolary? (Yes, we've had more than one literal drabble in the past.) Please go to this entry and sign up if you're interested!

Signal boosts, as always, are deeply appreciated.

Well, here we are, ready to start a new round of Alphabet Soup! This will be our 21st, and the theme this time is epistolary, interpreted however the author wishes. Your story may include any character and any era (pre-series, post-series, early season, late season, whatever), as long as it's gen, related to SG-1, and fits our theme. We've had somewhere along the lines of 140 different authors contributing over the years, but whether you're a dedicated regular, an occasional dabbler, or a brand new chef, your participation is more than welcome!

This is how it works: the letters of the alphabet are available on a first come, first served basis. Go to the LJ link and claim a letter - one letter per author only. I'll strike them out as they're claimed, but as long as you made your request first, the letter is yours. By making a claim, you are committing yourself to writing at least 100 words of epistolary fic by February 29th. If you're interested in writing a second story, backups are always welcome (and often needed), but you can't claim a specific letter for that.

If you choose to include graphics in your story (mock-up newspaper articles, etc.), that's fine - just ensure that you have 100 words of text somewhere. :)

The keywords are suggestions only. If you're inspired to use one of the keywords for your fic, that's great! If a different idea strikes you, that's great, too. You do not have to use any of the keywords I've offered here, you do not have to get my approval for your keyword, and you certainly do not have to use multiple keywords.

On February 29th, comment with a link to your fic in the SG-1 Gen Fic Day post, using the title as the subject of your comment (A is for Answering Machine, D is for Diary, E is for Expurgated Records, or whatever). Send me a copy by e-mail and your TOC template as well, as soon as they're ready. When all the letters have been submitted, a master post for the anthology will be posted, complete with the detailed table of contents.

For more detailed instructions of the posting process, click here. Even if you've cooked Soup before, please double-check; the detailed instructions have been recently edited.

There are only four rules: your fic must be at least 100 words, although there is no maximum limit; it must take be epistolary, whoever you choose to interpret the theme; the fic must be canon compliant, although it does not have to reference canon specifically and may be set in pre-series or future eras; and it should be gen. This is part of SG-1 Gen Fic Day, after all. :) You may write about any character, including original ones, that fit these criteria. You may mention canon ships - for example, Teal'c/Drey'auc or Daniel/Sha're - but no romance, please, and no AUs or alternate timelines. If in doubt, feel free to ask.

Please spread the word - I'm always delighted to have new authors join us (just as I'm ecstatic when loyal regulars join us for yet another round.) Signal boosts are always appreciated! And if you're a newcomer signing up, make sure to mention it so I can welcome you properly. With so many different authors over the years, I tend to lose track...

To avoid accidental multiples, the signups are taking place on LJ, although the anthology actually gets posted here on DW. Comment over there to claim your letter, please. If for some reason you cannot do so, you can comment here or e-mail me at sg1.fig at gmail. I'll try to get to you as soon as I can.

Alphabet Soup to be served in late February!

This time, the theme is Epistolary, which offers authors the opportunity to choose any era, any character. Anything goes, as long as the story takes place within the context of some kind of text or recorded format - and, of course, is gen. :)

Right now, we're looking for prompts of one or two words: e-mail, letter, diary, hieroglyphics, memo, mission report, briefing minutes, log, records, tablet... you get the idea. Please offer as many prompts as you'd like! There is no commitment involved in prompting; it's just to help inspire Soup authors when sign-up time arrives.

While I deeply appreciate a specific author's contribution to the Soup, two days have gone past without a response that would enable me to post the entire anthology. Under the circumstances, I am reluctantly (and, I hope, temporarily) removing that specific story from the Soup. Happily, we had a backup. When that author does come back online, I will be pleased to reinsert the story into place. But for now, it is unfair to the rest of you who have been patiently waiting!

So the Soup will go up in a few minutes. Once it's up, expect a few minutes more before I can get all the links back-and-forth filled out completely.

Soup authors, if you submitted multiple links, I used the first on the list. If you prefer something else, let me know so I can change that for you.

Also, please skim through your stories in the anthology and check for any mistakes I might have made, including omission of author's notes, missing italics, the wrong nick, or any other problems you might discover. Occasionally, when I am coding, I will spot the odd typo and fix it. If you find any mistakes that you want to correct, I will happily do that for you, too.

THANK YOU to everyone who participated! I am still amazed - and moved - that every single person who signed up submitted their story more or less on time, and that the only person who did drop out notified me well in advance, as is requested. Anyone who has ever run a ficathon or fest will tell you that is practically a statistical impossibility. You guys are absolutely awesome. :D

Edit: all links should now be working properly. And one more thing to look out for: if you're a new Soup author and I failed to note that, please do tell me so I can add you to the list!

Written as backup for Off-World Alphabet Soup, and quite likely to undergo a title change when I find out which letter actually needs to be backed up. :)

...Yes, the title has been changed. It was originally "Judgment Day." Both titles fit, I think, although the emphasis in each is different. Perhaps the current one is a bit more hopeful, though.

The problem with amnesia is that memories aren't always in context. Missing scene from Fallen in Sam POV as the team tries to deal with Daniel's self-doubt. Includes references to certain episodes from S1 and S4. ~ 2,100 words. Rated PG.

X is for Xenolalia )

Tomorrow is SG-1 Gen Fic Day! Get ready to post links to new fic, older fic, recs, picspam, meta, vids - anything goes, as long as it's gen and related to SG-1.

Soup authors, don't forget to 1. comment at the Gen Fic Day post with your link 2. send me a copy of your story and 3. send me the template. If you're sending it to me today, before your story goes live, I'll fill in the URL myself. For those of you archiving your fics on AO3, there is an SG-1 Alphabet Soup collection that is open and unmoderated. Feel free to add your stories there as well.

If you've got any questions or comments, now's the time! And if you can't get your Soup done, please do let me know immediately.

Hope everyone's doing well with their Soup fics! We've got 10 days left until we go live next Tuesday, on July 28th. Three fics have already been sent to me (MUCH YAY) and I look forward to getting the rest of them. If you've sent me your fic and I haven't acknowledged it, please get in touch with me again.

A little Soup history, for those who don't realize how long we've been doing this:

details under the cut )

...and that brings us to now, when we're ten days away from celebrating Gen Fic Day with our twentieth Alphabet Soup.

I'm no longer going to try to make an abridged version of the anthology, as I've been doing since our second Soup. Instead, the complete anthology, whether in one entry or two (depending on how long it will ultimately be), will be solely on Dreamwidth. What we will have, both on LJ and on DW, is a detailed table of contents, complete with summary, details of characters and era, and a snippet of fic. This is asking a bit more of the Soup authors, I know, but I've created a template and included an example that I hope will make the process as easy as possible. Since the template will be sent to me via e-mail, I'll be dealing with any HTML tweaks that might be necessary and I'll also be able to help anyone who needs a little coaching along the way.

The template and example are below the cut. If you've got any questions or comments, please let me know here or by emailing me at sg1.fig at gmail.

Three weeks from today, on July 28th, SG-1 Gen Fic Day will be celebrated with Off-world Alphabet Soup. Yay!

If you're a Soup author, how are you doing? I've had one story sitting in my inbox already for weeks. :D Most of us, though, are still in the thinking stage. Feel free to comment, grouse, crow, panic, whatever in the comments.

If you're not a Soup author, you're still free to contribute to Gen Fic Day! New fic, recs, links to older fic, meta, picspam - anything goes, as long as it's gen and related to SG-1.

We had 21 authors in the first 72 hours, but only 3 more authors have signed up for Off-world Alphabet Soup since then. The letters E and K are still languishing in non-claimed limbo, weeping softly out of pitiful neglect.

Poor things.

If you want to be part of the twentieth Alphabet Soup, here's your chance! Sign up to write at least 100 words of off-world gen fic by commenting at this link. :)

We've had 21 authors sign up already in 3 days, wheee! Just five letters are still available for Off-world Alphabet Soup, so if you're interested in writing at least 100 words of gen fic that takes place off-world in the SG-1 universe, go sign up while you still can. :)

It's hard to believe that we're up to our TWENTIETH Alphabet Soup! We've had upwards of 130 different contributors over the years (I lost track long ago) and we've covered a great variety of subjects. Go us! :D

This time, our theme is a fan favorite: off-world. Your story may include any character and any era (pre-series, post-series, early season, late season, whatever), as long as it's gen, related to SG-1, and takes place off-world.

This is how it works: the letters of the alphabet are available on a first come, first served basis. Comment at the LJ entry to claim a letter - one letter per author only. I'll strike them out as they're claimed, but as long as you made your request first, the letter is yours. By making a claim, you are committing yourself to writing at least 100 words of off-world fic by July 28th. If you're interested in writing a second story, backups are always welcome (and often needed), but you can't claim a specific letter for that.

On July 28th, comment with a link to your fic in the SG-1 Gen Fic Day post, using the title as the subject of your comment (S is for Sandstorm, L is for Local Customs, M is for MREs, or whatever). Send me a copy by e-mail as well, as soon as it's ready. When all the letters have been submitted, a master post for the anthology will be posted. We'll be discussing this in greater detail in July, as there are a few changes ahead.

For more detailed instructions of the posting process, click here. Even if you've cooked Soup before, please double-check that there haven't been minor changes in the instructions since the last time you participated.

There are only four rules: your fic must be at least 100 words, although there is no maximum limit; it must take place off-world; the fic must be canon compliant, although it does not have to reference canon specifically and may be set in pre-series or future eras; and it should be gen. And if you're a newcomer signing up, make sure to mention it so I can welcome you properly. With so many different authors over the years, I tend to lose track...

To avoid accidental multiple claims of the same letter, signups are only on LJ. Please go here to sign up. If that's a problem for you, let me know.

We're having another Alphabet Soup this summer. Whee!

This time, the theme is Off-world, which offers authors the opportunity to choose any era, any character. Anything goes, as long as the story takes place off-world - and, of course, is gen. :)

Right now, we're looking for prompts of one or two words: P3X-whatever, naquadah, trees, ruins, Tok'ra tunnels... you get the idea. Please offer as many prompts as you'd like! There is no commitment involved in prompting; it's just to help inspire Soup authors when sign-up time arrives.

The full version of Time Travel Alphabet Soup is finally up! You'll find it here.

Soup authors, please take a moment or three to look overyour individual stories in the anthology, both the complete version on DW and the abridged version on LJ. Check your username (especially if it's not the same on both platforms), the formatting of the text (italics missing? words running together?), and the link I provided for feedback. Where authors offered multiple options, I simply chose the first link on the list. If you prefer something else, please do let me know.

My many, many thanks to all of you for your fannish enthusiasm and your patience as I got this rather knotty Soup ready to serve. It's getting more complicated, people. I adore SG-1 and the fandom, but the next Soup might be our last.
