Dial the Gate: Inauguration

Season Eight over at [info]redial_the_gate offically starts tomorrow (voting for the new comm icon is still ongoing), so it's high time I sit down and actually watch the S7 ep I've never managed to watch before!

...Hey, it's a clip show. It's not like it was all that tempting. :)

Anyway. I go into this one knowing that we first meet Hayes, that Kinsey is up to his usual slimy tricks, and that Woolsey goes from one-note bad guy to two-note I'll-back-the-guy-on-top. This is just live-blogging my reactions, although I might include some questions along the way. Onwards!

Hayes wandering around looking at busts and ignoring his briefing reminds me suspiciously of General Jack.

Taking off his shoes in the Oval Office is supposed to be cute, I know, but I didn't like it. Hayes can "enjoy the moment" without getting silly. I grinned at that very polite, "Moment's over, sir."

Why only "last seven years" and not nine? Poor neglected first mission to Abydos.

And herrrre's Kinsey! I wish I could enjoy him as an antagonist, but he's so over-the-top I can't take him seriously.

"...Did they really blow up a sun?" Hee hee hee.

"You don't trust the vice-president." "He obviously has his own agenda." Well, yeah. So does everyone. That's why Kinsey's OTT-ness bothers me so much - he could be calculating and eager for power without adding the personal vendetta nonsense and overblown religious mania to the mix. Also? I am the first to agree that the SGC has made lots of mistakes over the years. Why can't that be acknowledged and dealt with on an honorable basis, rather than always being a weapon in the hand of the bad guys?

::sniggers:: They used a clip from a clip show in their next clip show! Oh, writers.

And it just occurred to me that aside from Hathor rummaging through SG-1's memories, Kinsey has been a major player in all clip shows. What does that say about the character?

I wanted to squish the CJC for defending Hammond, heh.

Hayes undercutting Woolsey's pomposity by telling him to save the speechifying for later was very satisfying. :)

"Let's start with insubordination." ::sporfles:: Low blow! Jack's picture is in the dictionary next to insubordination!

Okay, I laughed out loud when Woolsey says, "Yes, why don't we talk about how often SG-1 are under the influence of something alien," and then drops an entire stack of folders on the table. :)

He only mentions that Daniel died once?!

Interesting that so much emphasis is put on Jack taking the Ancient download rather than, say, getting mindstamped. The writers were doing a bit of foreshadowing, maybe?

"How these people maintain their sanity is beyond me." Mr. President, who says that they do?

I think Woolsey and Kinsey are making a mistake here. Transparently obvious as it might have been, appealing to Hayes to get SG-1 off the front lines and allow them to recover would've been a much more powerful argument. And heh, Woolsey says they should at least get a couple of sick days! He's right there. :)

Kinsey has been keeping his mouth shut this whole time. Wise of him, I think.

...And he ruins that assessment a few seconds later by losing his cool with Hayes. He does the same thing with Weir in Lost City, doesn't he? And Hayes slaps him down nicely. I do like his point that he's elected to lead the country, not the galaxy.

I see Felger is still causing trouble.

Woolsey claiming that leaving the Gate open while SG-1 tries to make it through is breaking protocol...? Okay, someone explain this. The Gateroom was evacuated, blast shields were down, and they still had a camera feed. How was that endangering the planet? If Jaffa had started coming through, George could've closed the Gate then.

(I think that bit was from Chain Reaction. And I'm surprised no one pointedly brought up Bauer's version of "endangering the planet.")

I want to thump Woolsey and Kinsey for insinuating Sam/Jack. Gen girl feelings aside, Sam and Jack do not deserve that. The CJC should've defended them by saying that such talk undermines integrating male and female military personnel. And it's interesting that Woolsey isn't entirely comfortable with it. And I do not like the suggestion that Bill Lee complained about Sam.

Woolsey is wearing a wire for that conversation with Kinsey, isn't he? He is so obviously leading the conversation.

Wasn't Bregman's vid supposed to help with public perception? Or did that get tossed in the trash with the incoming administration?

It's interesting that the appeal to Hayes is, "Let them save the planet one more time." Because that's actually what happened, isn't it? Hammond and SG-1 beat off Anubis and then Hammond is off to Washington and SG-1 begins to dissolve into SG-.75.

"They've made some enemies... and frankly, I don't know if I can protect them." This? This is my biggest problem with NID/Kinsey storylines. The enemy shouldn't be on Earth. I absolutely hate the SGC being besieged from both within and without.

Woolsey warning the CJC disappoints me because I really did think Woolsey would have the proof of the wire he evidently wasn't wearing after all. Did like that last line though - "If you think there's proof, go and find it."

George! ::squishes him thoroughly:: Man, just glimpsing him on screen makes me smile. :)

Of course Hammond isn't surprised by this - he remember all too well when Tessa and Kayla were taken for a "little ride."

And I'll grant Woolsey intelligence for making that connection and recognizing that Hammond (okay, Jack) must've somehow gotten something to hold over the NID in order to get back.

Floppy disk. ::dissolves in giggles:: Interesting that Hammond has it in the top drawer of his desk - just for this occasion (because I wouldn't put it past him to have an inkling of what's coming), or on a regular basis?

"I didn't know who to trust. I still don't." Zing!

Hayes shows he's intelligent, hee!

Woolsey is so adorably arrogant, isn't he? He's worrying about his place in history. Sheesh. Hayes has a good comeback, though.

Bottom line: yeah, I see why this slipped so easily under my radar. Nothing actually happens, does it? Anything new here is made pretty obvious in Lost City. Still, even a few minutes of extra George footage makes the ep worth it. :)

I think this leaves me with only three SG-1 eps that I have not yet seen, and one of them is coming up in S8. Gemini, here I come!
