Other than episode reviews and general squee about SG-1, the contents of this journal generally fall into one of three categories: fic recs, meta, and my own fic.

First of all, my apologies for the long absence when there's an Alphabet Soup simmering on the back burner. I have been dealing with multiple connectivity issues lately and I still can't access LJ at all. Or AO3. I hope this will clear up soon, sigh.

Meanwhile, we have Quantum Alphabet Soup scheduled to go live next week. Since I haven't been around to cheerfully remind the cooks to keep stirring, and there are still several unclaimed letters, I am considering one of two possibilities:

1. Announcing an extension of 2-3 weeks, to give everyone time to write and hopefully get more people to sign up. This isn't very fair to those who have been working, and I know that one cook has finished her story already (although I haven't seen it yet).

2. Revising the usual schedule of "everyone post on the same day" to "everyone post within a certain time frame" which would likely stretch for 3 weeks or so.

I welcome your thoughts. And if you haven't signed up yet to write at least 100 words of gen Quantum Mirror fic, you may go here. And if you've already written your fic and want a second letter, I certainly won't stop you. :)

With Rosh Hashanah starting Thursday night, I'll be offline until after Yom Kippur, around the start of October. Until then, I wish all of you a year blessed with health, safety, and happiness.

We haven't had one of these in a long time, so...

Welcome to the 23rd SG-1 Alphabet Soup! We've been doing this for ten years now, so some of you are old hands at this, some of you have joined us on a few occasions, and others haven't tried it at all. Veteran cooks and newbie chefs are all cordially invited! We will be celebrating Gen Fic Day on October 23rd and serving up 26 (or more) servings of Alphabet Soup for the occasion.

Not sure what I'm talking about? Browse the Alphabet Soup Index.

The theme for this Soup will be Quantum Mirror. Your story may include any character and any era (pre-series, post-series, early season, late season, whatever), as long as it's gen, related to SG-1, and fits our theme. more details under the cut )

This is how it works: comment below to sign up. By commenting, you are committing yourself to writing at least 100 words of Quantum Mirror gen fic by October 23rd. In the past, signing up included claiming a letter of the alphabet; as we did last time, I will give you a randomly assigned letter. This avoids the problem of simultaneous claims on the different platforms of DW and LJ.

On October 23rd, comment with a link to your fic in the SG-1 Gen Fic Day post, using the title as the subject of your comment (N is for Naquadah, K is for Kree Equals Yoo-hoo, W is for What Just Happened, or whatever). Send me a copy by e-mail and your TOC template as well, as soon as they're ready, even if it's before the 23rd. When all the letters have been submitted, a master post for the anthology will be posted, complete with the detailed table of contents.

For more detailed instructions of the posting process, click here. Even if you've cooked Soup before, please double-check; the detailed instructions have been edited over the years.

There are only four rules: your fic must be at least 100 words, although there is no maximum limit; it must have some connection to the Quantum Mirror, however you choose to interpret the theme; the fic should be canon compliant, although it does not have to reference canon specifically and may be set in pre-series or future eras; and it should be gen. This is part of SG-1 Gen Fic Day, after all. :) You may write about any character, including original ones, that fit these criteria. You may mention canon ships - for example, Teal'c/Drey'auc or Daniel/Sha're, or even Jack/Sam or Sam/Rodney if you are using those canonical AUs - but no romance, please, and no sneaking in references to your favorite non-canon ship. If in doubt, feel free to ask.

Please spread the word - I'm always delighted to have new authors join us (just as I'm ecstatic when loyal regulars join us for yet another round.) Signal boosts are always appreciated! And if you're a newcomer signing up, make sure to mention it so I can welcome you properly. With so many different authors over the years, I tend to lose track...

Here's another interesting article on translation and how not to do it. Why yes, Stargate, you've been guilty of this, haven't you? :) With our dear Daniel as primary culprit!

Realistic Translation for Fiction Writers

OTOH, Stargate sometimes gets it very right, too. I loved Sha'uri teaching Daniel how to pronounce things properly in the movie. Come to think of it, that cheat gets used a lot: finding a native speaker. Teal'c often helps Daniel (I'm thinking primarily of Brief Candle, but there are many other times), they trick the Aschen into translating "sterility," Jack reads nu nani anquietus for Daniel in The Fifth Race, and Descended!Daniel can read Ancient much more fluently. I'm sure there are more that I'm missing.

What other canon moments qualiify, to you, as realistic translations of an unknown language?

Ahem.

I never mention RL issues here, but...

EEEEEEE I BECAME A GRANDMA FOR THE FIRST TIME YESTERDAY

What an amazing, incredible blessing this is. My new granddaughter is beautiful. My daughter is a trooper. My son-in-law is utterly besotted. Quite frankly, so am I. :D

We now return you to your regularly scheduled SG-1 fannishness.

Summary: Off-world universities, solar power, and a riddle of the ages… SG-1 have a mystery to solve.

Notes: Written for the [community profile] stargate_summer Reverse Big Bang, and inspired by [personal profile] roeskva's stunning original artwork. Thank you, Roeskva, for such a gorgeous piece!

Takes place at the end of S2, after 1969. Lots of references to The Fifth Race and a certain episode of S1. I used Stargate-level science (that is, I mostly found information on Wiki or made it up entirely), and it is a grand old tradition to write Sherlock Holmes Stargate style "homages" pastiches.

Many thanks to Aelfgyfu for her careful beta skills, helpful suggestions, and title assistance.

This story can also be read at AO3.

I just posted my 50th fic to AO3, starting from back in 2007 with my very first SG-1 story and going forwards, one fic a day (more or less) at a time. I'm only halfway through 2009 now. Good grief, I used to be prolific.

It's been an interesting experience so far. I am charmed by the statistics page and it's interesting to see how some fics are better received now than when they were first posted (and vice versa). Getting kudos e-mails are fun, because I can tell when one person is browsing through my stories, and it's certainly a nice way to start my morning. :) I can't make up my mind about kudos themselves; are they a plus, because it's nice feedback that you wouldn't get otherwise? Or a minus, because less people bother with actual comments? Or a combination of both, which is probably the reality.

Also, old friends rereading my old stories and commenting on occasion are an absolute joy.

In any case, it's nice to reach a milestone like 50. :) My next fic up will be on Sunday, and that will be my [community profile] stargate_summer fic and I am SO EXCITED to have written something new and substantive, finally.

Okay, so. Admittedly with a bit of reluctance, I have finally made the leap to AO3.

(Yes, it's a fabulous resource. Yes, I have a problem or two with it. LJ's situation, and the disappearance of two regular archives where I had my fic backed up, played a role in the decision.)

Any suggestions from those more experienced with the archive? The one about "don't upload umpteen fics per day, without even bothering to include summaries" doesn't need to be given. :)

A very interesting article on what it really means to work out a new language and how that translates into fic:

lLinguistics in Arrival

Mind you, our Daniel is even more of a polyglot than Louise :) but I thought there were some nice touches here.

So go write Daniel fic. That's always a plus. :D

Thanks to a miserable (but blessedly short-lived) virus, I spent some time rereading old fic on my Kindle. One of them was Nanda's Wavelength, a gloriously teamy goodness, early S1 story that had me grinning despite being huddled under the covers. I recced it way back in 2006, so it's worth mentioning again, don't you think? Wonderful Jack voice, superb characterization and humor, genuinely alien natives... trust me, this one will make you fall in love with SG-1 all over again!

“Right,” Jack said. “Try not to smell threatening, people.”

If you're a fan of old skool SG-1 fic, you might want to check out The Tablet, as Jb has informed me that it won't be around much longer. Many of the authors hosted there have moved on to AO3, but there are also fics there that might not be available after the site goes down in a few months.

The Tablet was one of the first SG-1 fic sites that I discovered, back in the day. Daniel-centric, lots of drama, very good authors. Mostly gen, with a side serving of "zipfic" which slews sideways, just a bit. :)

So [personal profile] ratcreature is offering drawbles (a drabble-like drawing), and I asked for Teal'c meeting the avatar of Ratcreature as a Furling. And I got this! :D

Ratcreature as Furlings

Does that make you squee or what? :D

[personal profile] ratcreature has also treated me to another drawble in the past, a quick illustration of a rather cracky ficlet of mine. You can find it here.

Good grief, I did not post a monthly review all year. Probably because there wasn't much to review, sigh.

So, 2016:

29 recs, which you can browse on the first two pages of [personal profile] figs_sg1_rec. That brings to 1,044 in just over ten years - yes, that was a milestone for this year: ten years of reccing, as of April 1st, 2016. I celebrated, so to speak, by highlighting some (but certainly not all!) of the best over the years. You can browse through some 110 recs with the ten years of reccing tag.

Two Alphabet Soups, Epistolary and Kidfic. Good thing, too, because I probably wouldn't have written anything otherwise. Here's what I did write:

Lost Letters. Letters don't always survive long enough to be read. References/spoilers for Secrets, Fair Game, and Forever in a Day; includes references to Daniel/Sha're. 1,330 words. Rated PG.

Camouflage. Appearances can be deceiving, as the team knows all too well. Includes some unexpected Jack angst. ~1,200 words. PG.

T is for Teal'c. Few people expect the former First Prime to be so good with children, but SG-1 knows that Teal'c has vast and unexpected depths. A Daniel retrospective on a friend. References various episodes throughout the series (mostly those with kids). 1,710 words. Rated PG.

O is for Other Perspectives. Five times SG-1 had to accept an unusual perspective of childhood and adulthood. Jack POV, set in Seasons 1 & 2. Includes detailed spoilers for Brief Candle, the Nox, and Thor's Chariot. 2,250 words. Rated PG-13 for certain details involving Brief Candle.

Z is for Zen. Last-minute contribution to Kidfic Alphabet Soup. Baby Shifu has a limited comprehension of what's happening to him. Vague references to Secrets, FIAD, and Maternal Instinct. 262 words. Rated G.

I have hopes for 2017, though, as I've signed up for [community profile] stargate_summer and it's high time for another round of [community profile] sg1friendathon...

So here's to more fic, more recs, and more SG-1 squee. :)

Here we are: the last installment of my celebration of a decade's worth of gen fic recs. There were over 1,000 recs during that time, and while I certainly slowed down this past year, there are still lots more stories out there!

Follow the tags if you missed previous installments. I have still managed to avoid reccing an author more than once in this series, although if someone uses more than one penname, they might have slipped through the cracks.

Five secrets Teal'c knows about his teammates, by le russe satan )

Threads of Earth, by Xylaria )

Directly Proportional, by Denise )

Ready When You Get Back, by Campylobacter )

Won't Feel So Alone, by Epiphanyx7 )

...And here we are. A decade of recs, featuring over 100 different authors. And there are many more that didn't get mentioned, despite deserving it.

It's been an interesting journey, over these past ten years' worth of recs. It's amusing to see how ridiculously verbose I was, back at the beginning, before I learned to dangle and tempt rather than summarize. But it's a journey I'm glad I took, and I'm happy, too, I was able to take so many of you along with me.

Many, many thanks to all the writers out there. You keep writing; I'll keep reccing. :)

Welcome to the ninth installment of my celebration of ten years of reccing! As I keep saying, this is getting harder and harder: avoiding authors I've recced before, when there are already over 90 that have been cited in previous installments. I would browse the archive and light upon a particular fic, then check back and see the author has been mentioned before... The first two months only had one rec that wasn't from an author I've recced already! It doesn't help that it was around this point when my reccing frequency slowed down, either. But here we are. :) Follow the tag if you missed any of the first eight years.

Y is for Yearning, by Dennydj )

Out There, by Ami Ven )

2014 was the year of lots and lots of short fics for me. Here are the links to a few of them:

For Want of a Symbiote (the World was Lost). Sam's choices in In the Line of Duty had tremendous impact on the universe. 464 words. Rated PG, with multiple AU deaths and apocalyptic histories, and spoilers for various S2 through S6 episodes.

X is for Unknown. A tag for 1969 for Episode Alphabet Soup. When SG-1 returns to their own time, they try to find out what happened to Michael and Jenny. Rated G.

One Minute to Curtain. Jack will do his duty, even if he hates playing the game. Jack's thoughts on his team in Shades of Grey. 555 words, rated PG.

One year left to complete a decade of reccing! Is this fandom awesome or what? :D

Welcome to the eighth installment of my celebration of ten years of reccing. Follow the tag if you missed previous years. Lots of Cassie fic recced during these twelve months!

Decade, by Nomad )

Wherever She Prospers, by Mrspollifax )

H is for Hair, by Cleo )

Depth Perception, by Jb )

The Footprints I Left Behind, by Normative Jean )

Catch a Breath, by Frith in Thorns )

An Immense Distance, by Kedd )

My writing dropped drastically, but here are links to two stories:

Left Unspoken. ~1,850 words. PG. Five things Jack and Daniel never told anyone about their first trip through the Stargate. Includes references to Shades of Grey and Meridian.

Crossing the Line. ~1,200 words. PG. Ra may have punished Nagada, but Sha'uri isn't ready to abandon her newfound knowledge just yet. An expanded scene from Stargate: the Movie, and the third part of the Lines series.

Maybe I will finish before the end of the month! Here's the seventh installment of my celebration of ten years of reccing. Follow the tag if you missed previous years.

I had to skip over so many stories because I've already recced that author before in these posts, and a few more that I skipped because I'm saving a particular fic from that author from later years. But here are ten wonderful stories that I recced in my seventh year of reccing.

Only Held by Gravity, by missparker )

Alchemy, by Melannen )

In the Cards, by Eponymous Rose )

Five Lies Sha're Told, by Smilebackwards )

A Halfway Moment, by Fridayschild )

One Such Possible Journey, by Jedibuttercup )

Cheating the Other Guy, by Sholio )

Scuttlebutt Says, by Element78 )

U is for Unspoken, by Thothmes )

Five Things Jack Loved and Lost, by Chocolate Kettle )

2012 is when my fic writing began to slow down. There's a drabble series that still isn't finished, sigh. But here are a few stories I wrote:

O is for Optimism. Cam has always been an optimist; it's kept him going for a long time now. But sometimes, he needs a little proof. Major spoilers for Continuum, including AU canon character deaths, and a certain episode in S2. 1,290 words. Rated PG.

V is for Victuals. Aliens, civilians, military personnel -- they all need feeding. That's Sophie's job, and she's proud to do it. No real spoilers. 510 words. Rated G.
