I want to like new episodes of SG-1, I really do. But... there's that but, isn't there?

I want my characters back.

Remember SuperSam who overshone everyone else? She's being supplanted by SuperVala, and I hate it. I like the Vala who magnaminiously waives her finder's fee and "fixes" the problem by turning off the alarm; I don't like the Vala who saves the day by making Sam or anyone else look stupid. This Vala isn't fun at all.

I want the Sam who doesn't cry at the drop of a hat, who can show she's human without being weepy, and who has a backbone. Why oh why did she agree to fix the ship for the Lucian Alliance, even after poor Emerson was killed? She does this over and over and over again. There must be a memo floating out there: if you need to get Colonel Carter to do something, threaten to kill somebody, even if it's someone who signed up for this and is fully aware of the danger. Argh.

I want the Daniel who used to care when people died instead of making stupid jokes about people dying in the vacuum of space.

I want the Teal'c who has something more to do than getting tortured by the same guy, over and over again.

I want my Stargate back. :( Enough with the ships. Remember that big ring in the basement of Cheyenne Mountain? Yeah, that one - the one in the title. Yeah, that.

On the other hand... yes, there were parts I liked. Mitchell was likeable, even if the plot holes were big enough to hide the Stargate in. Teal'c almost losing it when Mitchell let him out was great. Daniel hurrying Vala along ("You stole it all by yourself last time!") was hilarious, as was his unease (and rightfully so!) in the captain's chair - whose idea was that?

I'm annoyed that they killed Emerson, although I appreciate the creepiness of it, because it was all too easy to imagine any other member of SG-1 in that self-same position. Especially Jack, from back in the day. We'd expect him to horn in, make himself annoying, get in the guy's face... and yes, get shot in this case. So creepy is definitely the word for it. But is there some rule that as soon as a character becomes likeable, he or she has to die if they aren't actually in the title credits? Moments like this increase my worry for Bra'tac's general health. Still, at least the Lucian Alliance has been granted status as actual bad guys, huh?

I can't see myself watching this again for a good long while, but I'm still looking forward to new eps... so they must be doing something right. I guess.
