The votes are in, and August 4th won by an overwhelming margin. I'll admit to disappointment, since it means I won't be able to rec the tribute at [livejournal.com profile] stargateficrec, but there you go. :) We'll be posting our Alphabet Tribute in celebration of what would have been Don's 66th birthday.

So, here's where you comment to claim a letter for our George Hammond Alphabet Tribute. This is going to be slightly different from the last two alphabet soups, so please read carefully before committing yourself!

(Not sure what we're talking about? You can check out previous anthologies to get the idea: Sam, Daniel, and Teal'c.)

The general's soup will not be served the same way as Daniel and Teal'c Alphabet Soup. Those were written as part of SG-1 Gen Fic Day, and getting them piece by piece was part of the day's process. This time, though, we're going to do it the same way we did Sam's Defining A to Z - all stories must be turned in by the day before, and they'll all be posted at once in a single collated post.

Since a lot will have to be organized behind the scenes in order to get the whole tribute put together properly, here's the scenario:

1. Choose a letter from those available and comment here to claim it. I'll strike them out as they're claimed, but even if I don't confirm right away, claims are on a first-come, first-served basis. Only one letter per person - as we did with Teal'c, I'm hoping to have 26 individual authors.

2. At the same time, friend me (if you have not yet done so already) so that you can read any pertinent posts on your own flist.

3. When I comment to confirm your letter, I will friend you back (if I have not yet done so already) so that I can add you to a custom friends group, created specifically for this project.

We did this for Sam's anthology, because it was a birthday gift for [livejournal.com profile] abyssinia4077 (and welcome back, Abyssis! We've missed you!) and it was the best way to keep it a secret from her. The method worked well, so I'd like to use it again.

Over the next three weeks, any discussions or questions (such as what time of day the master list should go up, how to create the post on your own LJ, and so on) will be posted only to the custom friends group, so as not to clutter up my full flist and allow for as much privacy as might be needed. I'll make sure to have at least one screened comments posts, and there's always my gmail (sg1.fig)... Basically, we'll be doing this like a mini-ficathon. :)

The rules for the ficlets are as follows:

1. Stories must be a minimum of 100 words long. There is no maximum word limit, but experience does show that anything over 2,000 words is likely to get less feedback (too overwhelming in conjunction with 25 other stories at once, I suppose).

2. Stories may not be about George Hammond's death. We want this to be a celebration and tribute, not an elegy.

3. Stories should be about some defining aspect of General George Hammond. For that reason, stories should not contradict canon. This does not mean that fics have to be episode-related, but they do need to fit the characterization of the man we watched on our screens. (If you specifically want to write about one of the canon AU Hammonds, comment or e-mail me, and we'll discuss it.)

4. Stories should be gen. This does not mean that mention of canon ship is verboten; for example, a fic about a younger Hammond and his wife would be fine, as would a story about Hammond dealing with Sara O'Neill post-Lazarus. But no romance, please. If you have any questions, comment or e-mail me, and we'll discuss it.

5. Stories are due no later than August 3rd, so that the complete anthology can be posted on the 4th.

The keywords are listed below. Thank you to everyone that contributed suggestions! Remember that if you claim a letter, the keywords linked to that letter are suggestions only. You are not obligated to use any one of them if you have a keyword of your own, and you are certainly not obligated to use more than one! The multiple suggestions are there only for inspiration.

It should be noted that some of the suggested keywords are deliberately whimsical. Some people even offered explanations for their proposed keywords (you can read the comments here if you're interested). Whatever you choose as fine, as long as your story fits the criteria given above.

do you want us to post the fic in our lj's on Aug 3 and then put a link in a comment?

if so, where should we comment? On your LJ at any time? or will there be a specific post that we should comment on with a link? and do you not want the fic unveiled until Aug 3? Or what?
