Later this week, I'm off to the States for a visit with family. Despite eight days with no internet access (gasp!) I am very much looking forward to it. :)

However, I'll have fourteen or so hours of travel time (a little less on the way back), so I'm looking for recs. Naturally I would love it if someone could rec some good solid SG-1 gen I haven't read yet! And podfic would be just fantastic. There seems to be very little gen podfic out there, sadly (although [livejournal.com profile] malnpudl would like to do something about that - if you've got any to recommend for her, go read her post.)

Other than SG-1, I love anything Tolkien (bookverse only) that treats the original material with respect (for example, Erinrua's superb Eomer fic, Ashes, East Winds, Hope that Rises) and that doesn't merrily pair everyone with everybody (my gen genes are pretty constant, heh). Discworld fic is awesome when it's done right, which... doesn't happen very often, so I'll be delighted if anyone has any recs there. Good plotty stories in the Lois and Clark fandom are great, although that's probably just a matter of wandering over to the fic archive and checking last year's noms for the Kerth Awards. :) And Watership Down fic that isn't Mary-Sued doesn't seem to exist, sigh - I'd be amazed if someone could prove me wrong there!

Oh, yes, and classic Star Wars, with no reference to the prequels, thank you very much. ;) I have a particular soft spot for fic that explores the gap between ANH and ESB.

But back to SG-1. :) Our last SG-1 Gen Fic Day was back in late October, so it's time for another one! No Alphabet Soup this time, so it's up to all of you to write your own gen story or ficlet or drabble or commentfic for February 2nd. Fic, meta, art, vids - anything goes, as long as it's gen and SG-1!

Feel free to browse through previous Gen Fic Day contribution at the round-ups, linked here. And spread the word to your own flists, please - start writing some fic in honor of our first Gen Fic Day of 2009, so we can take back the glee - and bring on the squee. :)

How does one take part in Gen Fic Day? Is there a community?
Sunday, January 18th, 2009 05:27 pm (UTC)
I'm afraid I don't have any recs. Just questions.

Any thoughts of doing a friendathon again this year?

No pressure! I know it's a lot of work. I just happened to be looking through by journal the other day and came across the last one and thought "hmm."

It's all explained at the main SG-1 Gen Fic Day post, but basically, it all started because I tag gen fic for [livejournal.com profile] sg1_debrief and I got frustrated at the dearth of gen, especially compared to all the nongen stuff out there. :) So I appealed to my flist to post something, and got a terrific response! Since then, I've been arbitrarily announcing Gen Fic Days every three months or so.

On Gen Fic Day - and it'll be Feb 2 this time - I create an entry. Anyone who wishes to participate comments there, either by posting ficlets in their entirety or linking to new fic, WIPs, even older stories. Recs and meta and even art and vids are welcome, too - anything, as long as it's gen and related to SG-1. The following day, I round up all the links and post an organized round-up, to make browsing easier.

In addition, several of the Gen Fic Days have also featured Alphabet Soup, which are organized anthologies of 26 (or more) ficlets based on a single character. So far, we've done Sam, Teal'c, Daniel, Jack, and General Hammond. Janet is next on the list - probably some time in May or June, I expect.

And now that you've had your incredibly long-winded answer, are there any further questions? :)

In my experience, most "smaller" ficathons (that is, those that aren't based on ships) tend to run on a bi-yearly basis.

I loved the ficathon, but there's a lot of other ficathons going on this year - one for Teal'c, one for Sam and Jack, and of course, [livejournal.com profile] stargate_summer, and I'm not the only gen writer who signed up for that! :) So I think [livejournal.com profile] sg1friendathon will be on hiatus this year, and after that... well, we'll see.

But thank you very much for asking - it means a lot to know that people enjoyed it, and would want to do it again. :)

No, that sounds excellent! I'll take it as a challenge to get some of my gen ideas out of my brain and into reality. :-)

I doubt I can rec anything in SG-1 (gen) that you haven't read; you're more likely to rec something I haven't read!

I thought you lived in the States! May I ask where you do live, if not the States? If you don't want to answer, please don't worry about it. But I can't believe I've thought all this time you lived around here somewhere and you don't! (I'd have guessed east of the Mississippi, if you'd asked, but I'd never narrowed it down more.)

PS: As I was saying, you know way more fic than I do! I just enoyed 'Watching Long In Hope And Fear," thanks to your rec.

Safe travels! (and yummy traveling food :P ) And, of course, have a lovely time with your family.

I'm failing massively at imagining any genfic I've read and could rec that you wouldn't have run across (all I can think of is some apocafic which, if I remember right, you don't read)...but I try to incorporate anything I've read and liked in my monthly roundups (http://abyssinia4077.livejournal.com/tag/monthly+roundup).

(I could, assuming I have it with me and I think I do, get you a copy of people from my college reading all of LOTR outloud which isn't quite podfic...) (and I can point you at good M*A*S*H and Band of Brothers genfic but...not fandoms you listed)

Yay! You're coming our way! I hope you have a safe and lovely trip with your family, fig! I'll wave as you fly over. ;-)

Hmmm. Well, to be sort of self-aggrandizing, me as real-life me posted some Tolkien-related poetry for the great man's birthday recently, over in my real-name writing blog here: http://mwinikates.wordpress.com/2009/01/03/happy-tolkiens-and-ciceros-birthday/

And "Estimated Time of Departure" by Yahtzee, here: http://yahtzee63.livejournal.com/136203.html
Is one of the BEST post ANH stories I've ever read.

Hope that helps!

Very reasonable. :)

I've actually been debating about Stargate Summer myself. If I were to use the story that I'm working on for it, the 50,000 word count is incentive to develop some things story-wise that I might otherwise skim over. Or maybe I'll just use it for inspiration. Or maybe this story will just keep going South on me.

Oops. Didn't mean to turn this into an angst thing. What I was going to say before I distracted myself was that if a time comes that you want to resurrect the friendathon, I'd probably be able to help out if you were looking for that sort of thing.

Thank you very much for the offer - I'll definitely keep it in mind, when the time comes!

There is no greater compliment to a reccer than knowing you've introduced others to new fics, so thanks. :)

Grew up in the States, yes, but I've been living in Jerusalem for over 16 years now. Your assumptions regarding my location are probably due to my insane schedule. ;)
Sunday, January 18th, 2009 09:09 pm (UTC)
Hee, yes! The pistachio nuts must come along!

I'll check out your roundups, thank you! As for an audio version of LOTR, I have the CDs of Rob Inglis reading it. Sadly, the appendices aren't included, but the bit when he rattles off the names of all the hobbits at Bilbo's eleventy-first birthday party almost makes up for it. :)
Sunday, January 18th, 2009 09:09 pm (UTC)
Thank you! :)
Sunday, January 18th, 2009 09:10 pm (UTC)
Thanks for the links! I'll check them out. :)

Jerusalem? My gosh! Yes, I think my assumptions were based on when I saw you online; you frequently seem to be online when I am, and I assume that those online when I am are in US Eastern or Central time. (Yes, I know they could be in Canada.)

Yes, you've introduced me to a lot of fics, and to writers I didn't know, so you've definitely done a great job!
Sunday, January 18th, 2009 10:14 pm (UTC)
Sure thing. :) And safe flying!

A very long time ago, I wrote Harceisis (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2044705/1/Harceisis) which, even though the writing is mildly embarrassing, the idea is still something I like. And then Beetle's Nothing (http://grav-ity.livejournal.com/358911.html) which is technically Daniel/Janet but mostly team.

My LOTR stuff is below the Stargate lists on me Master Fic List (http://grav-ity.livejournal.com/651767.html).

I'm afraid I can't think of a darn thing to rec that you won't already have read. Especially since most of my reading comes from your recs!

Two words: Internet Cafe. Just to let us know that you arrived safe and sound. ;)

I LOVE YOUR ICON.

Seriously, how have I never seen anyone make an icon out of that before? So awesome.
Monday, January 19th, 2009 05:09 am (UTC)
I had the same reaction when I found it, actually. :) This is the full animated version.
Monday, January 19th, 2009 06:34 am (UTC)
Thanks for the links! And I'm with Izh, especially the animated icon - stunning.
Monday, January 19th, 2009 06:35 am (UTC)
Heh - probably won't be anywhere near internet access at all, but maybe I'll have some time at the airport. And thank you! :)

Off the top of my head, between ANH and ESB... Freedom to Err (http://boards.theforce.net/the_saga/b10476/20953782/p1/?14), by Obaona. Also, Number One (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4309053/1/Number_One), by Blank101, and Breathing Space (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/1222693/1/Breathing_Space) by Squelchything.

In general I have a fair few Original Trilogy Star Wars fics on bookmarked on Delicious (http://delicious.com/lyore/fandom%3AStar_Wars). Emphasis on long AUs focused on Luke and Vader, and long, canon compliant post OT stuff.

There are also a few Discworld recs here (http://delicious.com/lyore/fandom%3ADiscworld), although I think most of them are crossovers with fandoms you haven't listed. One or two straight Discworld ones, from memory.

Hope that helps!

It certainly does help. Thanks! :)
