Watching COTG: Final Cut at the moment, and YAY it's gorgeous and the music is stunning and oh, George Hammond, how do you get more awesome?
Currently paused at the 24:07 mark because while I'd heard that Sam's "reproductive organs" speech was going to be truncated (although I wasn't expecting all the feminist sparring to be removed, and Jack's line about "not liking women" comes totally out of left field now), I was disappointed to have their conversation heading up the ramp removed, too. (No "I adore you already" snark, and Sam barely gets to geek before he shoves her through, sigh.) But I just wailed "NO!" at my screen because they took away the original wormhole effect and replaced it with the one from SGA/S9-10.
::whimpers::
I'm going to be adding to this as I go along. Heh. Don't mind me. Minor spoilers for changes ahead!
(ETA... um, 17. Sorry! Didn't realize how long this was getting. Also, my electricity went down for over an hour TEN MINUTES from the end, which was just a wee bit annoying, heh. Finished now!)
Oh, come on: I don't care much for the recutting of the initial scene in the Abydos Gate room, and I miss Daniel's first nervous giggle, but they changed to "Macguyver" to "jerry-rig"? Puh-leese!
Eh, don't care much for the new recutting of the Daniel/Sha're kiss. He's still dazed at the end, but he's conscious enough in the middle to slant a look at all the watchers in the middle of it all. Focus, Daniel! :)
The new visuals of the pyramid from outside are stunning beyond belief. ::hugs Abydos::
See, there's a problem with meddling. It tends to escalate. By deciding to remove ANYTHING that's even remotely feminist from Sam's dialogue, they didn't just cut out the reproductive organs joke (which is in-text meta throughout the show); when Sam introduces herself to Daniel as "Doctor Carter," they cut the line where Jack snipes. "I thought you preferred 'Captain.'" So when Daniel shows them the cartouche room, he doesn't call her "Captain-Doctor," but just "Captain Carter." Sigh.
Oh, YAY we see Sam videotaping the cartouches! I've always assumed that she must have, or how else could they have had all the addresses after the Abydos Gate was buried? OTOH, again, some of the cutting in that scene takes away from the emotional feel of the original.
Not so yay for Apophis showing up - Sha're seems more timid for some reason. Imagine how much I like that, heh.
Oh, that farewell scene with the Abydons was perfection - sigh, why mess with that? Okay, a little more teary and emotional isn't a bad thing, but the group hug is shorter, and there's no cut to Jack watching, and no recognition of what it means to Daniel to leave Abydos and for the Abydons to lose Daniel. Call me picky, it's okay. :)
Oooh, new briefing room scene! Poor Daniel still in his robes and Sam and Jack still in BDUs - they didn't even give them time to clean up! In fact, a nasty comment from Hammond here: "Get this man some clean clothing. He stinks." Complete with sour face. Oh, Don S. Davis, thank you for ignoring the initial attempts to make Hammond a cliche instead of the marvelous general you shaped for us. I would expect a line like that from Samuels, not George.
Pretty sure this is in the original too, but I absolutely had to grin at the morning briefing with everyone in dress blues and Daniel in oversized civvies carrying a coffee cup. ::squishes him::
And they cut out Daniel's "...No" when he interrupts Hammond - just goes straight to "I really need to be on their team," and I don't know why. It's that persistent stubborn Daniel no, why get rid of it?
Aaaaand here's the : the lack of full-frontal nudity, which I confess is probably the biggest reason why I wanted to see this version. In the past, I've always either fast-forwarded over the Sha're bits or (yes, really) covered part of the screen with my hand. I close my eyes during parts of Serpent's Venom and Talion for the same reason, and yeah, I'm not too thrilled with the extra bloodiness in the opening scene at the Gateroom either. But Sha're's scream is... off, somehow. Less deep. Less visceral. Also, there's this annoying habit of cutting to the dialogue from the next scene while still lingering on the last visual of the current scene, and it's starting to get on my nerves.
OTOH, I'm glad we still get to see Sha're bite the guard's hand. :)
Totally silly, but I miss the shot of Daniel licking his lips after Jack refuses to listen to him explain about the point of origin. :)
And again reshooting what isn't necessary in that first scene with Sam and Jack and Daniel when they meet the "worshippers" who take them to Apophis' palace - Daniel doesn't get to even start explaining about Sha're being a "gift," and they cut out the bit where we see Daniel turning to leave cover and say the all-profound "Hi."
Very, very weird: in the scene at the palace before SG-1 walks in, there's a little extended chatter - and it's in English. I distinctly heard "true delicacy." Um, yeah. Right.
How awful is it that I laughed that they emphasized the Daniel-whumping? :D But yes, very much liked the extended scene with Sam and Daniel in the dungeon and Jack's talk of destroying the GDO. (Stargate bingo - first mangling of a name, whee!) DID NOT LIKE the new cutting of the scene with drawing Earth's PoO in the dirt.
BUT! Nice extended scene with Kawalsky. We need more AUs with him alive, yes.
The choosing scene was... just a little different. Y'know, I've liked the subtlety of the new music but sometimes those missing musical cues feel very off, and it was a particularly strong vibe here. The Goa'uld actually answers Daniel rather than Teal'c just shaking his head and the female Goa'uld indulges in a bit more Daniel-whumping of her own before they choose Skaara. And it still feels odd that Skaara screams for Jack and never once calls Sha're's name, even as he's carried right past her - although that's in the original, too.
Also, Apophis seems to relish the panic here. I prefer the utter indifference of the original cut - more Goa'uldish, to me.
I don't like Teal'c's trembling lip. We don't need that obvious cue - CJ does such an awesome job of conveying emotion without it.
Argh, I CANNOT believe they tweaked that climactic scene between Jack and Teal'c! It's not much, but oh so unnecessary. Also, while I've read that CJ actually looped all his dialogue (that is, re-recorded all his lines to give Teal'c the power of the voice that evolved over his years playing the character), this is the first moment when it struck me - "Many have said that." "I have nowhere to go" - that one especially feels off. I'll have to watch a few more times to see if it continues to actually jar me. Such torture... :)
Um. Sam left Daniel sprawled againt the wall. And Daniel, move a little, won't ya? It takes him longer to get up than just about everyone else.
Yay for extra scene with Teal'c explaining why he turned, and the visuals are beyond beautiful, but I'm sorry we don't see Skaara ringing down, and the Goa'uld clutching her newly implanted child is just... odd.
Oh, I miss Daniel fumbling for his notebook and Sam practically whacking him for delaying. OTOH, yay for his handwritten drawings!
The big guy throwing rocks actually does damage! Jack says, "Nice!" Hee. :) Also, he seems to be the father of a family/clan from the new group hug on the ramp, which is kinda nice - I very much like that they took the Big Guy (tm) and gave him depth with just a second or two. Now I want a rewrite of the ep from his POV!
TOTALLY UNFORGIVEABLE: They took out my absolute favorite Sam and Teal'c moment of the entire series - when Sam walks up the ramp towards Teal'c, and with wordless grave courtesy for this Tau'ri female warrior, he hands her his staff weapon with calm trust. ARGH.
Also, I can understand making this standalone and taking out Kawalsky getting snaked and the eye flash, but again we lost Daniel licking his lips :) and it faded to black a little too quickly for me. Ah, well.
Bottom line: stunning visuals, unquestionably, and I enjoyed the extra scenes (mostly). But I didn't care particularly for the bad segue of one scene to the next in many places by having the next scene's dialogue starting over the final shot of the current scene. And I did very much miss certain reaction shots or music cues that were removed. A nice effort all round, and I'm very glad to have the sheer anticipation of sitting down to watch SG-1 again!
I look forward to the chance to watch again with commentary, but that probably won't be till next week. In the mean, hope you all enjoyed the play-by-play. :)
