I didn't have a chance to do one of these monthly reviews back in July, so here are two months' worth of fandom, fic, and recs.
In fandom
We had the badfic summaries of SG-1 episodes, and Gen Fic Day with Jacob Alphabet Soup! Also, the "final cut" of COTG came out and I liveblogged my reactions.
On the meta side of things, I finally wrote that long rant about past victories getting swallowed up for new plotlines that I've been threatening to post for years. :) It's over at
redial_the_gate, with the usual excellent discussion - and disagreements! - in the comments.
In more general fandom,
stargate_summer went live with some fabulous, deliciously long fics - three of them gen, even! :D And
suzannemarie's
one_prompt goes live tomorrow. I've, um, thought about a fic. Er. ::clears throat::
In fic
I managed three fics in these last two months, all gen and PG:
Attitude of the Knife. Team in trouble, and Wonder Twins in classic geek mode. It's irritating when Jack can't tell if they're doing it to be annoying or just because they're geeks. A crossover of sorts - I never know how to classify these!
A is for Airborne. A character study on Jacob Carter, who may get to walk on alien soil but is still a flyboy at heart.
C is for Coffee. Jacob brings his first real taste of Earth back to Vorash, and we learn why Jacob told Sam in Death Knell that he gave up coffee for Selmac. I still like the tagline most of all! :)
In recs
August marked a huge milestone for me, as I posted my 500th rec. I made an entry of some of my favorites, although it really only scratches the surface. It was interesting to look back at those earlier recs and see how they were all links to webpages and archives; I still hadn't learned my way around LJ then! Now, I deliberately go out of my way to find LJ links to stories, because authors are much more likely to get feedback from an LJ entry than an archive.
I also learned brevity. My older recs were much too long! I don't think I ever gave too much away, but I did get a little too enthusiastic in explaining the plot. Experience has taught me that recs are best when they're short and sweet and tempting. This is my shortest rec to date:
...Does the job, doesn't it?
(That's for Bunnies! by
holdouttrout, by the way. Just in case you're curious.)
To the best of my knowledge,
figs_sg1_rec is the only regular source of gen recs in the SG-1 fandom. I have to admit that I'm pretty proud of that. :)
I even got the master list of fic recs up to date! All the recs through the end of this month are now linked in alphabetical order.
So, I recced four different categories in the last two months: Jack and Teal'c friendship, Daniel, drama, and crossover. These were all originally posted at
stargateficrec, of course, although the links below are for
figs_sg1_rec.
Jack and Teal'c friendship recs
The O'Neill Method, by Paian, PoG, and Sid (G)
Sufficient Illumination, by Kalquessa
Transitions, by Destina (PG)
Meditatio, by Stultiloquentia (G)
Wanderlust, by Surreallis (PG)
Warriors Playing at Gentlemen, by Josephine (G)
Previous Jack and Teal'c friendship recs were made in June 2008.
Daniel Jackson recs
Countdown, by Aurora Novarum (PG)
Dances With Knives, by SG_Betty (PG-13)
Barren, by Random (PG-13)
Five times Daniel lied about a translation, by Shinealightonme (PG)
Five Times Daniel Almost Left The SGC, by Fyere (PG)
I last recced the Daniel category in March, and that post includes links to other months of Daniel recs.
Drama recs
The Slumbering Place in the Stars, by Surreallis (R)
One Dimension Removed, by Tafkar (PG-13 by reccer)
Archaeology, by Nightspear (PG-13)
In the Flesh and in the Clod, by Salieri (PG)
The Shadow Over Chatsworth (PG-13/R by reccer)
I last recced Drama in January 2008.
Crossover recs
Just Dessert and Twenty Six by Eleven, by Tallulah Rasa (PG)
Where You Hang Your Hat, by Destina (G)
"Wargames" Didn't Play Out Like This, by Aurora Novarum (PG)
Let's Do the Time Warp Again, by Spoofmaster (PG)
Five Pieces of Advice Teal'c Gave Ronon, by Shinealightonme (PG)
I last recced crossovers in April 2008.
As the month of Tishrei begins in mid-September, I won't be around very much - completely off-line for about two weeks (starting around the 15th), and only sporadically available for another two weeks after that. Therefore, I'm only claiming one rec category over at
stargateficrec this time instead of my regular two. So how about signing up to rec four stories this month in your own favorite category, and helping spread the squee? :)
