sg1genrecs is my little baby here at Dreamwidth, and I'm kinda proud of it. :) We don't get more than four or five recs a month, but we've got a pretty respectable number of people subscribed, and and I'm
always delighted when we get new reccers. In fact, the theme right now is your favorite fic - why not go post something?
The comm's layout was set up before DW went into open beta, when there were very few layouts available, and I used a Core 1 Mixit layout that has worked out very nicely. But there's one thing I'd really love to add, and that's multilevel tagging. That means that instead of looking like this:
friendship: daniel and cameron - 5 uses
friendship: jack and daniel - 100 uses
friendship: jack and janet - 3 uses
friendship: jack and sam - 16 uses
friendship: sam and daniel - 64 uses
friendship: sam and sha're - 4 uses
friendship: sam and teal'c - 20 uses
friendship: teal'c and daniel - 42 uses
friendship: teal'c and jack - 19 uses
friendship: teal'c and vala - 1 use
It would look like this:
friendshipI really like the look of the multilevel tagging. It's neater, easier to navigate, and makes a lot of sense for a comm with over 60 tags. Unfortunately, multilevel tags aren't supported by the Mixit layout, which is Core 1 - although it is available for Core 2.
So. I
asked over at
style_system and got some very helpful advice from
foxfirefey which I
tried to follow and, well, couldn't. Sigh. How badly am I dating myself if I mention that I first learned programming with Basic? I can
follow the coding of the layout - mostly - but when it comes to tweaking, I'm apparently pretty hopeless.
I did a little poking around and found
Dignified Transmogrified, which supports multilevel tags and is at least a color scheme that I like. But I really enjoy the look of the current layout, and I'd hate to lose it.
So, bottom line: is there someone out there who is familiar enough with the S1 and S2 layout codes to help me with this? I don't want to lose the very pretty layout we have right now, especially with
sg_betty's lovely matching banner. If anyone can advise me, or would even be willing to dive into the layout code and wrestle it with themselves, I'd be very grateful.

*peers at code*
*scratches head*
Unfortunately, I think this is over my head. I've never been good with S2 stuff. Sorry. :-/

Thanks for the moral support, anyway. :)

If you're interested in any of the other features available to core2 layouts, I'd be happy to do it the other way around and take a look at converting the CSS to work with one of the core2 layouts :)

And I see that the comments include instructions on how to do it for the tag page, too, not just the sidebar. Wonderful! Let's hope it works... :)

It turns out that multilevel is pretty unwieldy in the sidebar, but it looks just gorgeous on the tags page and I'm very happy with it. I removed the tag sidebar and added a link to the tags page instead - much neater that way.
If I have any more troubles in the future, I'll know where to wave frantically for help!
