January: fandom, fics, recs

We celebrated Gen Fic Day this month, complete with Vala Alphabet Soup -- my personal contribution was A is for Aspect. I managed one other ficlet this month, Checklist, which is Jack and slight team silliness, complete with evil Wonder Twins and Teal'c pwnage. Mostly, I am hugely amused at how many people out there have icons with Jack and cake! :)

I also got treated to podfic, as juniperphoenix made an absolutely fantastic recording for All in the Timing. Am I lucky or what? :)

In other fandom news, sg1_debrief is back (and needs more gen fic, heh). redial_the_gate continues to cover S6, and I'm really enjoying these "new" eps of Stargate for me! My watch of Allegiance inspired this icon, of which I am childishly proud (I've actually seen other people using it, whee!) and is shareable with credit:



danjanficathon just closed signups for Daniel/Janet fics (ship or friendship), but you can still PM grav_ity if you want to join. And I'm particularly interested in gate_women, which is gen-centric but allows non-gen as well, and is a celebration of the women of Stargate. Really, what's not to love with that? :) They are still open for prompts for the next few weeks, and the word doesn't seem to be getting out too much, so please boost the signal on your own flists -- this is one ficathon that I really want to succeed!

This category, too, had sadly been long neglected; I last recced it in July 2008.

stargateficrec has changed its reccing template. While there are some aspects I'm a little disappointed to lose from the old format, I think it actually makes it easier on newer reccers. So if you've been hesitating to sign up to rec, now's the perfect time -- and hey, Sam and Daniel friendship could always use some extra love!

Also, sg1genrecs had a particularly active month, mostly thanks to beatrice_otter for her crossover recs. :) If the comm isn't on your reading list, I encourage you to check it out.

I always feel guilty about not reccing stargateficrec, but I'm a picky reader, which means that (aside from a handful of authors I follow), about 95% of Stargate fic I read comes from following that community, which means it's already been recced and so I don't have much in any category that hasn't already been recced.

Yes, that can be a problem. :) OTOH, stories can be recced multiple times - as long as it's in different categories. One of the stories I recced this month - Syn's The Only Winning Move - has been already recced at least twice at stargateficrec, in Team and in Gen. But I was able to rec it again without any trouble, because my category was Original Character. Another example - there was a fic I loved, and Abyssis and I had a friendly squabble over who got to rec it first. Since the main character was an OC and Aby had that category, she got to go first. I recced it a few months later, in Gen. Or yet another example for you: the excellent crossover Shadow Over Chetsworth had been recced in Crossover and Gen before I recced it in Drama.

Never think that it's not worth rereccing a good story! I sometimes track entries after I've recced them, and even when it's a repeat rec, there are still responses from people who missed the story the first time around.

I think you'd be a great reccer for stargateficrec, but don't take that to mean that I want you to stop being so wonderfully active at sg1genrecs. You keep right on doing that. :)
