I'll be going on a bit of a hiatus for a while; I'll be completely offline from September 12th for twelve days or so, then only sporadically online for another two weeks after that. I don't be back to normal (well, normal for me, anyway) until October 7th or 8th.

I do hope to have another Canon vs. Fanon essay ready to post in that week that I get back, although I'm making no promises! I have working drafts on three different subjects at the moment, so I thought you might enjoy the chance to choose which one will be next.

I'll leave the poll running through September; I probably won't have time to work on anything before October, anyway. If you're sufficiently interested in the Canon vs. Fanon series to actually care what happens next - or if you just like taking polls :) - here's your chance to vote on it!

[Poll #1052552]

If you have favorite (or non-favorite!) fanon tidbits that you'd like to see included in the topics listed here, or suggestions for future canon vs. fanon essays, feel free to add them to the comments.

You make Sam an option and expect me to pick ANYTHING else? :)
Sunday, September 9th, 2007 07:17 pm (UTC)
LOL. She was tempting to me too, but I've been after fig to do Daniel's glasses for MONTHS!!!!!
Sunday, September 9th, 2007 07:21 pm (UTC)
Poor Daniel and his always-broken (in fanon) glasses! Don't worry - even if you end up out-voted, we'll get to them. Eventually. :)
Sunday, September 9th, 2007 10:46 pm (UTC)
You know this glasses thing is because I'm too lazy to figure it out myself.

Personally, I go with nearsighted, but canon is screwed up.
Sunday, September 9th, 2007 07:26 pm (UTC)
Oh, I'd love her to do Daniel's glasses sometime (I've decided he is neither near not far sighted but just has an astygmatism (only I can't spell that)) but....SAM! She hasn't really talked about SAM!
Sunday, September 9th, 2007 07:19 pm (UTC)
I would never imagine you choosing anyone other than Sam! :)
Sunday, September 9th, 2007 07:28 pm (UTC)
:)

I just...I love the team, and I love Daniel, but I swear every month I love Sam more. Every time I rewatch an episode or read a fic or think about her she just gets more awesome.

Not to steal Sam's thunder but I had to vote my favorite and I'd LOVE to see a debunking of Daniel As Geek Archetype.
Sunday, September 9th, 2007 07:37 pm (UTC)
Oh, come now. Daniel is definitely a geek. Just not a clumsy, sneezy one that always loses his glasses. :)
Sunday, September 9th, 2007 07:58 pm (UTC)
Absolutely he's a geek. I wouldn't love him even a tenth as much as I do if he weren't. But the Geek Archetype is how a lot of people perceive smart, book-loving characters in stories and so we get the clumsy, sneezy Daniel despite what is actually on the screen. I think the movie Daniel drew more heavily on this archetype than the show, to be honest, and there's some truth in "first impressions." But so powerful is the archetype and that first glimpse of Daniel that 10 years of evidence to quite the opposite of sneezy and clumsy is not enough to overturn it. I find that fascinating.

I am eager to read your thoughts, no matter which subject you choose, but the Daniel articles will always get my vote because I adore Daniel to tiny little pieces. :)

Oh, word! And it's interesting that, as you say, it's the stereotype of Spader!Daniel that seems to have dug into fanfic writers' consciousness. It accounts for all the people writing Daniel with blond hair instead of brown, I suppose.

I adore Daniel to tiny little pieces. :)

Hee! My kind of woman. :)
Sunday, September 9th, 2007 09:21 pm (UTC)
I'm looking forward to your discussion of the false image of Daniel. :)

I tend to think of Daniel as having dark blond/light brown hair. It is light brown on its own but with a little sunlight, I think it gets blond and even some reddish blond highlights. But the SG-1 Daniel certainly isn't a blond, per se.
Sunday, September 9th, 2007 08:12 pm (UTC)
Daniel sneezy, clumsy??? Please! Haven't they seen Bounty or Bad Guys????
Sunday, September 9th, 2007 08:17 pm (UTC)
...or Threads? :)

The stereotype is usually reserved for the first three seasons, with the fourth sometimes included. By the time we hit S5 - with Daniel seamlessly using a P-90 to take out Replicators in the season opener - most of those tropes fall by the wayside.

Your icon, by the way, is gorgeous. I'm not a fan of the square lenses, but he's seriously beautiful there, isn't he? :)
Sunday, September 9th, 2007 10:42 pm (UTC)
I'm a big big fan of the square lenses *g* He is indeed seriously beautiful in the icon. Unfortunately I can't remember where I snagged the icon from. All I can say is, it's not mine and whoever created it is very talented.

Sam needs it. But what about Teal'c. WHAT ABOUT TEAL'C?

*ahem*

Anyway, you have a nice time off. Come back and play when you come back :)
Sunday, September 9th, 2007 08:35 pm (UTC)
One should never apologize for championing Teal'c! :)

However, there aren't any real fanon bits about Teal'c floating around. That would be because practically no one writes him. :( The only fanon bit I've ever seen is the "Teal'c can drink to excess without getting drunk, because his symbiote metabolizes alcohol" - and I've already covered that one in the canon vs. fanon post on junk food and drinking.

Your icon, BTW, is stunning. I love that delightful glimpse of Daniel-the-archeologist in Learning Curve. May I snag it?
Sunday, September 9th, 2007 08:43 pm (UTC)
Sure. I adore archaeologist Daniel. Wish we'd seen him more.

But there has to be more fanon Teal'c. There has to be! What about the fandom assumption that Jaffa culture is open about homosexual activity? That Jaffa have relations with other men and that their wives don't mind? And that they easily can be with men or women without having any issues? I see that one ALL the time. Maybe it's just found in slash fic, but I'm positive I've found it in het and in gen.
Sunday, September 9th, 2007 08:59 pm (UTC)
Well, speaking as a gen-only reader, I've never seen that one myself. Creating a backstory where none exists isn't fanon, although seeing the same one over and over, as you suggest, would make it qualify.

Drey'auc was a gift from Apophis, wasn't she? That's not just fanon, is it?

Drey'auc deserves more love. Such a furious mother-bear protecting her cub! A great powerhouse to match Teal'c, I think.
Sunday, September 9th, 2007 10:43 pm (UTC)
Drey'auc being a gift from Apophis I'm pretty sure is fanon.

Otherwise, I dunno. Teal'c's cooking abilities. There's some confusion on how much the symbiote comes out and interacts, but I don't know that's a common fanon. Or maybe whether or not he can use contractions?

Yeah, fanon v canon Teal'c is a toughie.

Monday, September 10th, 2007 07:23 am (UTC)
I'm not sure the Drey'auc as a gift is fanon as much as it might be my misremembering, actually. :)

Very, very little canon vs. fanon for Teal'c. We need more Teal'c love!
Sunday, September 9th, 2007 11:18 pm (UTC)
From what I remember, it seems like their home was a gift from Apophis, but I don't think Drey'auc herself was. But I could have forgotten something.
Monday, September 10th, 2007 07:22 am (UTC)
Yep, you're right. The house was a gift - not much of one, to be frank. It was tiny!

But Drey'auc herself wasn't a gift. Thanks for helping clarify. :)

I voted for Sam because that would be something different that I haven't seen before. I'm pretty familiar with the Jack and Daniel canon/fanon (though definitely not as much as you :D) but not so much with Sam so I'd be very interested to see that.
Monday, September 10th, 2007 07:25 am (UTC)
Sam is winning the poll at the moment! We'll have to see what happens. All three of these will probably get done before the end of the year, so no worries. :)

I was wondering if you might want sometime to compare Stargate techno-babble and pseudo anthropology with the real stuff.

I sure know *I* would!

Heh. I'd like to read that, too. :) Sadly, I know even less about astrophysics than I do about archeology, so I'm not precisely qualified!

I do know that it's an absolute pleasure on the very few occasions when they get things right. Tangent, for example, did a superb job.

Now, if someone could do the research for me and feed me the necessary information, I'd be happy to put such an essay together, because it would be seriously fascinating reading. Until then, though, we'll just have to roll our eyes at the screen and love the show anyway. :)
