Crickets chirping...? Appeal for gen fic! (Let's call it SG-1 Gen Fic Day.)

I have the immense privilege of tagging for sg1_debrief, which mostly entails skimming through the newsletter's flist in search of gen fic. (The maintainers do the really hard work, and I think the other taggers cope with a lot more volume than I do.) There's always less gen fic than ship fic, but I'm resigned to that as par for the course by now.

But what's going on here, people?

Since the 17th, there has been one gen fic posted throughout all of LJ SG-1 fandom that gets tagged for the newsletter. ONE. (Thanks for that, dknightshade! I don't follow the jack_built AU, but it was a fun snippet.)

So here's my appeal: write some gen fic today, please! It can be commentfic posted here, or a drabble on your LJ, or a snippet of your current WIP. Fic recs are good, too, like the ones posted below: here and here. Anything. Gen is the one kind of fic that embraces all aspects of the fandom, so let's have some SG-1 love!

I'm afraid I can't write good fic to save my life, but I can rec you wonderful gen story (if you haven't seen it before, of course). it's guardian of the gate (http://sgnovels.shahrazad.net/storiesg/guardianofthegate.txt) by Jb - very long, hurt/comfort, sort of teamfic, and it's written in pov of absolutely brilliant OC.

As a big fan of a well written bit of Gen I will attempt to help, sorry it's short but it's past my bedtime. Pre "Into the Fire".

Squinting and cocking her head slightly to the side Sam scrutinised the sight before her. It wasn't something she had seen before but then in her line of work that wasn't an oddity.

Reaching out she ran a finger along the edge of the entity in question and let out a small huff.

"Well?" the only other occupant questioned her.

"Give me a moment" she replied "This isn't something you can rush. It requires, time and an attentiveness that I'm not able to give because you keep interrupting me."

"Fine, fine" her companion held his hands up in defense and acquiesced to her request for quiet.

Reaching back down onto the bench Sam picked up one of the multitude of tools lying there and applied is to the entity, attempting to entice it to do what she wanted.

Finally she gave up.

"Sorry Daniel but the Colonel is right, that goo is never going to come out. You're definitely going to have to get a haircut."

I think that's the thing with good hearty gen - it tends to be long. I have about 4 WIPs that are gen right now and are going to be novel length. I just haven't had the patience to sit down and finish them. (RL takes away all the fun.)

Oh, yes. All of Jb's fics can be summed up in two words: OUCH and GOOD. :)

I have a low tolerance for language in any circumstances, though, and this one was kinda... overwhelming. :) I ended up doing an S&R just so I could read it, and I loved it, but I don't think it'll ever end up on my list of recs.

jack_built isn't on the newsletter's watch list, so it's not getting tagged. dknightshade reposted her T fic on her own LJ, which is on the watchlist, and therefore did get tagged.

It's as simple as that. :)

I did wander over there and read a few of them (the Sha'uri ones had me melting in a puddle), but while it's quite a fun AU, I really do need that big stone circle in the basement. ;)

At least judging by last week's debrief, it feels like fic posting in general is down right now...

I promise my sg1teamficathon fic is gen as are both my ideas for apocalypse_kree (um, okay one of them has one sentence that wouldn't be considered gen but the story is gen) just...not ready for posting yet :(

I'll see if I have snippets of WiPs lying around (okay, I know I have that - but I need ones I haven't posted) or maybe can get an idea to lodge in my head. Just because you asked so very nicely :)

It might be a lot of factors, including the stark reality of the first time in TEN YEARS that there's no fresh eps. Without new inspiration, authors might be turning to SGA or whatever else interests them. Sigh.

OTOH, I am insanely gleeful in anticipation of sg1teamficathon, to the point where I've already snagged Team for next month's category. :) The two weeks' wait will give me more time to post Sam and Teal'c friendship recs first, yay!

Eh, I'm not scared of closed canon killing the fandom. I'm sure there will still be new people discovering it. Though, part of that may just be because I've always been in closed canon fandoms. Plus. MOVIES!

I think a lot has to do with the rush of ficathons right now, personally.

No, it's not a question of closed canon vs. open canon. Like you, I came to SG-1 from a closed canon - one that I discovered years after it had closed, and it's still thriving beautifully now. But I think that closed canon PLUS new canon for other fannish interests might divert, for the moment, most fanfic writing into the fresh blood of new episodes appearing weekly.

I can't work up enthusiasm for the movies. I've tried my hardest to give Mitchell and Vala every chance, but they haven't wriggled their way into my heart the way the way that Sam and Jack and Teal'c and Daniel have.

The Sam and Teal'c friendship fic request was posted MONTHS ago. There's quite a long queue there; I'm so pleased to see the "Friendship: Other" category is so popular! Maybe Sam and Daniel friendship fic will get its own category one of these days, just like Team? We can always hope. As for team, well... that was deliberate. When the sd_ficathon stories came out, I think we had to wait two months (it might only have been one, but I think it was two) before we could start reccing it! So I wanted to head that problem off. That, and snag the month for myself... :)

Hm, I appear to have lost the snippet I had from a while back. It wasn't all that exciting; just a bit of planetary exploration with strange trees and a deserted village. But it's been swallowed into the ether. I have to get my head back into SG1 anyway for my team ficathon assignment. Perhaps I'll get into the mood with a snippet today.

I'm sorry I can't answer your call for a new piece of fic today, but I'm definitely around. What I'm doing in terms of gen stuff is going back and revisiting redial the gate posts -- finally! what a wonderful tour through the canon. I'm so glad you guys are doing that and eventually I'll catch up. maybe.

I've noticed an enormous slowdown in all sides of the SG-1 fandom since the new TV season came along. The closing of the canon is a very big deal to a lot of people and I think it's inevitable that all sides of the fandom will slow down.

There are a ton of people who are watching and monitoring SG-1 and reading the fic, but the focus has certainly shifted for a lot of people to shows that they can watch and post about and discuss in real time. My f list seems to be most about Heroes and SGA and a bit of supernatural here and there.

I'm resigned to it changing so much! More and more people are able to be multifandom nowadays, I think. I'm not drawn that way, but I know people are watching for fic and enjoying it. But I'm still being quite monofannish.
