Someone who writes science better than I do, please incorporate this fascinating technology into a fic in which, say, the SGC can communicate with the host of Apophis. Or Ba'al. Or Sha're in Amaunet. Something.

Neuroscientists decode brain speech signals into written text

(I am endlessly amused at my ability to read articles like this and immediately leap to, "Oooh, shiny! Look how this can be incorporated with SG-1!")

What are some of your favorite (gen) Daniel fics, either your own or others'?

Here are a few links to my own work:

Remember the canon vs. fanon series? Those were mostly Daniel-focused.

Oh, Danny-boy explains why Jack doesn't really use "Danny" as a nickname very much, and Daniel, Pacifism, and Weapons Skills explains why the Daniel-the-pacifist trope is definitely fanon.

And because I am definitely not a fan of Saint Daniel:

The Fanonization of Saint Daniel, part one and part two

And because I am definitely not a fan of easily cowed Daniel: Clumsy, sneezy geek, which, of course, directly inspired sixbeforelunch's fantastic The Wrath of Daniel. My fic-enabling skillz may have receded of late (we are going to get the latest Soup cooked, right?) but I have a grand record on which to rest my laurels. ;)

On that note, I will link to my own Team Effort, in which the team that trains together, breaks out of prison together.

Remember this entry from last week? The idea is to come up with a list of off-screen missions that are suggested by canon - episodes that begin with the team returning from off-world, or episodes in which the team is following up after another SG team, etc.

There's been a great response. The total so far is as follows:

We have 9 episodes from S1, 12 from S2, 7 from S3, 11 from S4, 5 from S5, 6 from S6, 6 from S7, a measly 2 from S8, 4 from S9, and 3 from S10.

Now, many of these are actually bigger numbers, as several episodes offer multiple possibilities. But it's pretty clear that some seasons need a little more prompting!

So if you care to scroll through the list and see if any other ideas pop into your fron, please comment at either that entry or this entry so I can add your suggestions.

This brilliant idea is the brainchild of [personal profile] ivorygates, and I am shamelessly stealing it for the next Alphabet Soup.

(Which needs a name. "Canon-implied Alphabet Soup" lacks a certain oomph. Any suggestions?)

Edit: [personal profile] green_grrl suggests "Off-screen missions." I like that one!

The premise is simple: many episodes of SG-1 reference a past or future mission. The most famous of these, I think, is the mission referenced in Emancipation to P3X-595 where Sam "drank that stuff that made you take off..." and the final frame of The Enemy Within, which ends with the team striding through the Stargate for their first mission together.

Other examples:

Establishing the base on Hanka, before Nirrti unleashed the plague in Singularity.

Missions to help the Enkarans, since Scorched Earth begins with the people settled in their new home.

The first mission to Juna, before Cronus showed up in Double Jeopardy.

Missions to establish peaceful relations with the Unas after The First Ones but before Beast Burden.

Followup to Beneath the Surface, getting the brainwashed victims moved to a safer, warmer planet.

Teal'c's adventures off-world during Solitudes, trying to find Sam and Jack.

All these popped into my brain after two or three minutes of glancing over a list of episodes. There must be many, many more, and they don't necessarily have to be SG-1 (how many times did Reynolds take his team to Thilana's planet?). So I would like to invite you all to comment here with your suggestions. The format of my examples above would be just fine. Include the name of the episode or an obvious plot line - "what happened to Sam and Jack and Teal'c while they were stuck off-world until they got the Stargate back up" is a good reference to Small Victories, but "that ep where Jack fires his P-90" won't be much help. ;) I'll go through the comments and collate them over the next several days and we'll see what we can come up with!

A very interesting article on what it really means to work out a new language and how that translates into fic:

lLinguistics in Arrival

Mind you, our Daniel is even more of a polyglot than Louise :) but I thought there were some nice touches here.

So go write Daniel fic. That's always a plus. :D

If you're a fan of old skool SG-1 fic, you might want to check out The Tablet, as Jb has informed me that it won't be around much longer. Many of the authors hosted there have moved on to AO3, but there are also fics there that might not be available after the site goes down in a few months.

The Tablet was one of the first SG-1 fic sites that I discovered, back in the day. Daniel-centric, lots of drama, very good authors. Mostly gen, with a side serving of "zipfic" which slews sideways, just a bit. :)

As mod/admin for [community profile] stargateficrec, I was e-mailed regarding the Fanatic Fanic Multi-Fandom awards, which are apparently open to the Stargate fandom for the first time this year. I took a quick look at the site; it seems to have been around for at least two years' worth of awards, so it is probably legitimate.

(Sad, I suppose, that it's necessary to add such a caveat, but there speaks experience...)

I won't be posting about it over at the comm, as that's not in [community profile] stargateficrec's purview, but I'm certainly happy to offer a signal boost in my own space. So if you're interested in nominating a favorite SG-1 fic of yours - or any of the other fandoms they cover - then go for it, says I.

Admittedly, SG-1 already is firmly in the "unbelievable" category when it comes to writing science stuff... ;)

But since our wonderful fanfic authors often do a better, more credible job than the show writers, this is a fascinating article that I think a lot of you might enjoy.

Writing Believable Nanotechnology

Even if you're not an author, it's an interesting read. :)

I have started reading Soup fics (yay!) and wanted to archive mine, as usual, on Heliopolis and Stargatefan. Only Stargatefan seems to have disappeared.

Admittedly, it's been two months since I've written anything, so I hadn't visited the site since the end of December...

Does anyone know anything about this? I'll be sad to see it go; it was the only gen SG-1 archive out there, I think.

I'm home! Exhausted but very happy after a lovely trip and a lovelier homecoming. :)

The monthly roundup will have to wait until next week, but here's a few links in the meantime:

The [community profile] sg1friendathon had 25 fics! \0/ Suzannemarie put up the master post here. My own contribution was Left Unspoken.

The Ficathon Frenzy is currently live and will last until Monday. This is your chance to write any unclaimed (actually, any unwritten) prompt left over from the Friendathon, with no mimimum word limit required. The prompts list is here; the official rules for the Frenzy are here.

If you are interested in reccing at least two fics over the course of November for [community profile] stargateficrec, you can do that here. SGA is always well-represented, but SG-1 usually needs a bit more love - there's only one SG-1 volunteer so far.

(BTW, did you all know you can schedule entries to be posted while you're away? I'm probably the last one to discover this...)

Just four days left to claim a prompt for the friendship ficathon at [community profile] sg1friendathon! I am so happy to see such enthusiastic beginnings - we've got 25 people signed up already! Is our fandom awesome or what?

I find writing trends so fascinating. When we last did this in 2008, I was very taken aback that Jack and Daniel friendship wasn't claimed at all (although happily, Magistrate did one prompt for the Frenzy). This year, Jack and Daniel friendship prompts went first - in fact, there were more Daniel friendship prompts claimed this time than any other. Interesting, that.

Now, any casual reader of this journal is well aware that I am a shameless Daniel fangirl :) and that I vastly prefer classic team to new team. And I am definitely happy in anticipating all the wonderful friendship fic that we'll be reading about my favorite archeologist and my favorite version of teamy goodness. Still, I think the newer team members deserve a little (gen) love, don't you? So if you're a Cam fan or a Vala fan, I do urge you to wander over to the sign-up post (on LJ only, so there won't be accidental multiple claims) and choose a Cam and Teal'c prompt. Or a Sam and Vala prompt. Or Cam and Sam, or Vala or Teal'c, or... well, you get the idea. :)

Mind you, if you choose a classic team prompt, I'll be pretty pleased with that, too...

Go. Find a prompt that sparks your imagination. And write!

(And many, many thanks to all you lovely people who have boosted the signal on this. It's very much appreciated.)

Eep! Here it is, five minutes to midnight, and I've just remembered that several people have suggested we should celebrate SG-1 today, in honor of the fifth anniversary of Continuum's release: our last SG-1 canon.

No time to write, so I will offer several links instead:

My Continuum-based fic (both Alphabet Soups, heh) are Vala in A is for Aspect and Cameron in O is for Optimism.

[community profile] sg1friendathon is going live this year again! Our third round has already started with prompt submissions. You can submit screened prompts here, with no commitment to write fic involved.

Also, [community profile] sg1genrecs is doing an "other media" theme, where you rec media other than stories (podfic, meta, picspam, vids, etc.) I would love to see some good recs there!

If you want to do the more classical kind of reccing, there's next month at [community profile] stargateficrec. Here's the link to the signup post.

And finally, I will just say this:

Stargate.

SG-1.

SQUEE!

:)

Towards the end of each month, I put up an admin post at [livejournal.com profile] stargateficrec, asking for volunteers to post recs in the following month. Since taking over, I've tweaked the rules a bit to make reccing a bit easier - the minimum number has been reduced to two, for example, and stories that were recced in 2007 or earlier are eligible to be recced again.

I'm happy to say that we've had a pretty steady stream of reccers these past months. There are some loyal regulars (::squishes them happily::) and several others; we've been averaging five or six reccers a month, aside from my own random recs. Wonderful!

However...

Nearly all the recs have been for SGA. With the happy exception of [personal profile] roeskva and [personal profile] hathor_girl, who have been faithfully trading off reccing Tok'ra fics (or Sam/Martouf), we've had precious few SG-1 recs lately.

Clearly, something must be done! :)

Can I tempt any of you to wander over to this month's volunteer post and sign up? As I wrote above, it's a commitment for only two recs in July, although more would also be welcome!

Let's show SG-1 some love (whether gen or the ship of your choice!), shall we?

Well, hi there!

I'm back, although I'll only be able to drop by only two or three times over the next twelve days or so. :)

I would first like to thank those of you who sent me birthday wishes in my absence, including, to my astonishment, paid free time on DW for my own journal, the rec archive, and [community profile] sg1genrecs. Wow. Thank you, lovely anonymous person! And thank you, too, to the not-so-anonymous lovely person who gave me paid time on LJ. I do love my icons :) and now I can revel in them all over the place! I hope I can continue to generate SG-1 squee in the next twelve months for you all.

Speaking of which, Gen Fic Day and SGC Alphabet Soup is in less than three weeks, on October 15th! Thanks to [profile] wendybnyc, all of the letters are now claimed. Soup cooks, please remember to send me your stories by e-mail at sg1.fig at gmail when they're done, and I'll happily accept any beta requests at the same address.

If you've posted anything SG-1 related while I've been gone, I'd love a link so I can go and check it out... :)

We wants our fandom back, yes we do, my precious!

Two months in which I managed to do nothing more than make 17 recs (I mean, yes, yay for reccing and I'm not going to stop as long as I still have fics on my to-rec list, but...) and look blankly at my WIPs. And come up with several more ideas for fics that will not write themselves. (Pre-series SARA O'NEILL, thank-you-very-much. Oh Traycer, I do want to get that one done!) Even [community profile] sg1genrecs hasn't been updated in over a month, sigh.

And in another week, I will be offline completely for two weeks and them mostly offline for another two after that. Happens every year, come Rosh Hashanah, but it means that I want to be fannishly active now and can't seem to manage it!

Part of the problem is, I think, that I know the SG-1 fandom is gently but surely receding into the distance. I don't want it to be, but it's a closed canon and there are precious few people out there still writing. (Thank you, Tallulah and Thothmes, for your recent contributions. Which I still haven't read yet, sigh. They are bookmarked!)

When I'm back, in mid-October, how about a Gen Fic Day? Possibly with SGC Alphabet Soup? Any SGC personnel other than those who have Soups of their own, that is. Siler, Walter, Brightman, Lam, Warner, Landry, any non-SG-1 team member like Reynolds or Dixon or Wells or Elliot or Hailey, Bill Lee (pokes Aurora), Robert Rothman (pokes sallymn), Felger, even the janitor (pokes Redbyrd) or any other reasonable OC?

If you're interested, comment. And squee about SG-1. Because, y'know, closed canon or not, the show is still AWESOME.

Scientists Make Reggae Music with Star Data

This is just crying out to be incorporated into a Sam fic. The music of math and the stars is just so perfectly her.

Any takers?

I'm looking at you, Magistrate. Heh heh heh.

Item the first: there are still four letters left to claim for Cam Alphabet Soup. If you are interested in writing 100 words (or more!) of gen fic on the topic of Cam by January 30, go to this post and sign up!

Item the second: this week, [info]redial_the_gate did The Shroud. I was personally a bit disappointed when the ep originally aired that so many people wrote non-gen ep tags, but that's my problem. :) Redial, however, is all-inclusive, and I'm very surprised to see that no one has bothered linking to the many fanworks -- with the exception of [info]sg1danny, who posted some stunning artwork. So if you've written a fic or done a vid or posted meta or created art or anything else related to The Shroud, please drop a link at the fanworks entry so others can enjoy it, too.

Okay, that is just not fair. How am I supposed to choose between Magistrate's Beneath a Beating Sun and Tafkar's One Dimension Removed?!

It's voting time over at Gatefic! I am obviously busy with the SG-1 gen ballot :) but you should check out the nominees and vote!
