(E is for Ernest Hemingway] For Sale: Baby Shoes, Never Worn, by Fig Newton (PG)

Word count: ~1,150
Characters: Jack, Daniel, Teal'c, Sam, Hammond, Bra'tac
Era: S3
Categories: angst, friendship
Author's notes: Possibly apocryphally, Ernest Hemingway was challenged to write a six-word story. The result was this fic's title.

Excerpt: "All right, people," Hammond said, rising. "It looks like we can close the books on this one for now. Get your reports done as quickly as possible. Master Bra'tac, will you be staying here...?"

"Excuse me, General Hammond," Daniel characteristically interrupted. "We're not quite finished."

"No?" Hammond eyed him.

Daniel stayed in his chair, but his shoulders went back as he straightened for the first time since the briefing began. "I need to go to Abydos, sir, and report to Kasuf."

Era: Season Two
Categories: Off-screen mission

H is for Helmet, by Fig Newton (G)

Summary: Daniel's annoyed at wearing a helmet, but it turns out to be a very good thing.
Word count: ~1,100 words
Characters: Daniel, Sam, team
Era: the opening moments of Solitudes, S1
Categories: Daniel headspace

Excerpt: Daniel took a gulping breath and bolted back to the DHD. This was always the moment of absolute trust for Daniel, when he put his faith in Jack and Teal'c and Sam, ignoring death roaring overhead while he worked to get them back to safety. He turned his back on the spitting bolts of flame, trying not to flinch or cringe or duck his head or do anything else that might distract him from the crucial task of dialing home.

I is for Indefatigable, by stringertheoy (PG)

Summary: Teal'c's adventures through the Stargate, trying to find Jack and Sam.
Word count: 1066
Characters: Teal'c, walk-on cameos by SG-3
Era: Season 1, during "Solitudes" (1.18)
Categories: gen

Excerpt: The first planet they try is covered by desert. The gate is housed in a small pyramid structure - smaller than any Teal’c has encountered before - surrounded by sand dunes as far as the eye can see. It reminds him of Abydos, and the deep pain of those memories momentarily wells up through the cold weight of worry he carries for Colonel O’Neill and Captain Carter. There is no sign of either of them, no hint that they or anyone else has been on the planet in many years. SG-3 completes a circuit of the pyramid and the dune it is on, just in case, before they file back through the gate.

L is for Legacy, Loss, and Lament, by Ivorygates (PG)
Summary: Maybe it would just have been better if Daniel thought the consequences all the way through before he told them Osiris was haunting his dreams.
Word count: 5,208
Characters: Daniel Jackson, Sarah Gardner, Team
Era: Tag for S7e15 CHIMERA
Categories: Offscreen Missions, Grim'n'gritty, Realpolitik, Missing Scenes, What Would REALLY Happen?
Author's notes: Prompt: The letter "L" and the "implied mission" following "Chimera"... but not, alas, the follow-up mission debriefing Sarah Gardener after Osiris is removed, which was the actual prompt. Ooops. A million billion thank yous to [personal profile] sixbeforelunch for their help with pesky research questions (and Russian grammar)! And [personal profile] dine for more research and moral support!

All the mistakes are entirely mine, of course. As always.

Also, there is a long and talky Afterword because I never know when to shut up.

M is for Miscalculation, by stringertheory (PG)

Summary: For the prompt: “Emancipation: the referenced mission to P3X-595 where Sam ‘drank that stuff that made you take…’”
Word count: 4403
Characters: Jack O’Neill, Samantha Carter, Daniel Jackson, Teal’c
Era: S1!Team
Categories: Gen
Author's notes: Warnings for alcohol, drugs, and nudity.

Excerpt: P3X-595 was a lovely little tree-covered planet populated by possibly the most amiable and unceremonious people Jack had ever encountered. The Dhareeji, as they called themselves, had welcomed SG-1 with open arms, delighted to have visitors and more than happy to share everything they had with them, if the steady stream of food brought the team’s way was any indication.

Characters: Robot SG-1, Jack O’Neill
Era: Seasons 1 - 4
Categories: Off-Screen Missions, Gen, Episode Tag

Excerpt: At least some things never change, Jack thinks as SG-1 are thrown into the village jail on the first planet they visit after the team all agrees they’re not going to be good little copies and bury the gate on Altair. No one was enthused about spending 11,000 years in a decaying underground factory, comtrya constantly echoing in their ears, when the whole universe was at their fingertips. Everywhere, of course, except home.

Link: S is for Synthetic

*

T is for Time, by Solstice ([PG])

Summary: Sometimes discovery can lead into a death trap.

Word count: 1816

Characters: SG-10: Major Henry “Hank” Boyd, Captain Roger Watts and Lieutenant Jonathan Reed, and Dr. Jessica McLeod

Era: Season 2, episode 15, A Matter of Time.

Categories: Team action, tragedy

Author's notes: Notes: Many thanks to Fignewton for organizing this Alphabet Soup challenge and for her quick and insightful beta. This story attempts to show what happened to SG-10’s mission to P3W-451 (s2e15, A Matter of Time) while correcting the scientific errors made by the writers of the show. Having said that, I'm pretty sure I've made some errors of my own, as I'm no astrophysicist either.

V is for Viable, by stringertheory (PG)

Summary: Sam reflects on the state of the team as they prepare to test Merlin's device.
Word count: 1053
Characters: Samantha Carter, with appearances by Cameron Mitchell, Vala Mal Doran, and Teal'c
Era: Season 10, immediately prior to "Line in the Sand" (10.12)
Categories: gen
Author's notes: General spoilers for S9 and S10 up to 10.12

Excerpt: Sam emerged from the Gate and immediately regretted forgetting to pack her sunglasses. PY4-893 was even brighter and sunnier in person than it had appeared in MALP footage. The small moon offered the interstellar traveler stable weather, plenty of open space, and a complete lack of habitation. Perfect for the first test of Merlin's device.

The first purposeful test, anyway.

The sky started clouding over as they worked, the breeze also picking up.

Jack frowned. "Think it will rain?"

"Your guess is as good as mine," Carter admitted.

Word count: 699
Characters: Daniel Jackson. Jack O'Neill
Era: Season Eight-ish
Categories: Off-Screen Mission
Author's notes: None
Excerpt: And that was when Jack (why did it always seem to be Jack?) offended the natives of Allum by snatching off his hat as he strolled toward them. Esla gasped aloud and laid her panicked hand on Daniel's arm. “Daniel? Why have you brought one such as him on such a foolish errand?

Z is for Zilch, by jedibuttercup (PG)

Summary: It's never "just" recon. Not when you're SG-1.
Word count: 1200
Characters: Sam Carter, Daniel Jackson, Teal'c
Era: Season 8; missing scene for 8.4 "Zero Hour"
Categories: Sam POV, gen

Excerpt: "Really?" Sam groaned as she came around the last curve of the current hallway to see yet another familiar intersection looming up ahead. The stark sandstone walls common throughout this particular abandoned Goa'uld base were virtually indistinguishable from one another-- but the big, visible X-shaped markings drawn at head-height on two of the other three corridors' walls were not.

Just like the last intersection they'd been through, and the one before that. She sighed, lowering her P-90 to take the grease pencil back out of its pocket in her vest, and marked their current route with yet another heavy X and a sequential number. They were up to twenty-three already, and the far corridor would make twenty-four; she wasn't sure she wanted to know how high that number was going to reach before they found the exit.
