I'm always a little unnerved at how far you can stray when a comment a page on your browser prompts you to click there, and then there, and then...

Anyway.

Moka pots. It seems the non-electric ones would work very well on a campfire. Do you think this is Daniel's choice for coffee on digs, or off-world?

Oh, I didn't know that's what those were called! My parents owned at least one for camping purposes. We stopped going around the time I was in high school, so I never thought too deeply about what we took for supplies, but we went several times a year when I was younger and one of those is still in the box that got turned over to my niblings for outdoor play equipment at Grandma's.

(My dad was totally addicted to coffee. The 10-cups-a-day-at-work sort of addicted. So that's def. what they had it for. If Daniel was familiar with them, I can totally see him bringing one!)

Several years ago, we had a major ice storm in my little corner of the world and some folks were without power for weeks. A coworker had camping equipment but, alas, no method of making coffee so he employed the 'hobo coffee ' method: ground coffee, tied up in a filter and boiled in a pot of water over the camp stove. Then he found one of these moka pots at the flea market. He declared himself ready for the next weather emergency!

Who needs to go on a dig or have an emergency? I use one of those at home (the small electric expresso machines just don't compare, in my opinion...at least not the ones I can afford). :) My guess would be that Daniel uses one of these when he's making espresso for just himself, as well as on digs and off world. When he wants to make a special treat, he makes a very fine grind of dark roasted coffee and uses an ibrik, though I'm sure he would call it a cevze.

Reminds me of a demitasse coffee pot like my neighbor has from Italy and I have but old looking from my own family.

Doesn't make much for people who streamline coffee like Daniel would though?

Yes, I have seen them larger.

I'm not the camping type, but I have used these coffee makers on and off all my life. They come in different sizes, so they would be perfect for camping. The one thing is that they are metal and can be a bit heavy, so not sure if best for carrying it on your backpack. At any rate, wouldn't Daniel experiment with all kinds of coffee machines? I bet he has a collection stuffed somewhere in his kitchen.

Daniel must have tried all kinds of things to get a decent cup of coffee off world, even fabric filters and hot water, but they are messy. I think with the moca pot you get a better flavor and easy clean up too!
