Dr. Daniel Jackson turns 43 today, and he's gone years now without dying even once! Well done, that man. :)

We are celebrating the auspicious occasion with SG-1 Gen Fic Day! Comment to this post with a drabble or commentfic; link to a longer story; recommend a favorite fic, whether it's new and shiny or a well-loved classic; post part of your current WIP. Anything goes, as long as it's gen and related to SG-1! I'll post an organized round-up of all the links on Wednesday.

If you're one of the twenty-six wonderful authors who are helping cater the party with a generous serving of Teal'c Alphabet Soup, please follow the instructions detailed under the LJ cut.

Hurray for gen fic, and SG-1!

How to serve Teal'c Alphabet Soup

In the subject line of your comment, type the title of your ficlet: A is for Apophis, I is for Ice Cream, and so on. If you are posting on behalf of the author, please include the author's name in the subject line as well.

If your ficlet is too long for a single comment, you have two options:

1. Reply to your first comment with the second (or third) half so that readers can follow it easily.
2. Post your ficlet in its entirety on your own LJ, but add a comment to this post with the name of the ficlet in the subject line, a line or paragraph or summary in the main body of the message, and a direct link to the post on your own LJ.

Tomorrow, together with the round-up Gen Fic Day post, I will also post the complete anthology of Teal'c Alphabet Soup. Stories that are below a certain word length will be included in their entirety; longer fics will be excerpted, with links to the complete fic in the author's LJ. This is due to posting constraints, to get all 26 stories in a single post.

Whether or not your ficlet will be included in its entirety, I strongly recommend that you repost it on your own LJ for archiving and feedback purposes. The anthology post will include links to each author's LJ post.

Thanks for your contributions, and helping us celebrate Teal'c, Daniel, and the rest of SG-1!

O’Neill had excused himself to what he smilingly insisted on referring to as the “Little Boys’ Room”, leaving Teal’c standing in the crowd. The mass of shoppers flowed around him like a stream. O’Neill had warned him that Saturday afternoon was busy here at the mall, but Teal’c did not find crowds a source of discomfort.

His hands clasped loosely behind his back, he glanced at the sacks of clothing and candles and magazines that were piled on the bench and floor beside him. His instinct earlier had been to reach for them all, to carry them for O’Neill, but he had stopped himself before either acting or asking. He was not a servant. O’Neill was his commander, but not his master. It was good to remind himself of that, to say that over and over. Daily he weighed the cost, but he could, at last, say to himself, “I live free,” instead of vowing only, as Bra’tac had taught him, to die free.

He glanced around the wide hall, with its tiled floor, its skylights and potted bushes and small trees and masses of people. His clothing was appropriate. The unfamiliar winter cap was tight and scratchy against his head. People on this planet rarely wore cloaks or hoods, which would have felt more familiar to him, but the familiar was something Teal’c was entirely able to sacrifice. Near the benches where he stood, there was the bookstore, and a clothing store for females, and the next window of floor-to-ceiling glass did not seem to be a store. He looked more closely.

Inside, behind the glass, a dozen boys formed a moving, untidy line. They all were dressed identically in white, with sashes of different colors. A man stood before them, holding out a padded training paddle, which they kicked, one by one. The man offered a word or a nod to each. Sometimes, smiling, he whacked one gently on the head, undoubtedly for some trivial offense.

As Teal’c watched, a memory intruded -- a small, eager-faced boy, too small for the discipline of lok’nel, but interested anyway in anything and everything his father did. Teal’c had cut a child’s-height staff for him from a tree branch, and they had spent precious afternoons playing at practice, the hours rolling by like minutes on that green lawn, under the warm, fast-setting sun.

“Hey.” O’Neill’s voice, at his shoulder. Teal’c turned. The colonel had his hands in his pockets. He frowned a little, searching Teal’c’s face, and then turned to look where Teal’c had looked. “Karate class. That’s a Japanese word; it’s one of what we call the martial arts.” O’Neill turned and began to pick up the sacks containing his purchases. Teal’c moved to do the same. Their loads were approximately equal, he noted.

“We can hit that barbecue place I was telling you about next. Unless you want to hang out for a while.” O’Neill’s lip curled a little in what Teal’c had learned was the beginning of his smile. “If you’re interested in karate.”

“It is nothing,” Teal’c replied, settling the thin plastic handles in his grip. He turned away from the boys’ intent faces, prepared to let O’Neill lead the way to the next destination.

Lovely! I really enjoyed the insight into Teal'c's thoughts; what he has both gained and lost in his decision to join the Tauri. And all compressed into a brief moment in an ordinary mall. Well Done!

thank you so much! glad it worked for you.

I love the way this feels so early in Teal'c's story--that Jack doesn't even know about Ry'ac yet, so he doesn't associate the same loss of a child with Teal'c that he can't avoid himself, and that Teal'c is still adapting to Tau'ri clothing, and making his own choices. Poetic in its clarity and brevity.

wow; poetic! high praise. *blushes*

what he DIDN'T tell them makes rewatching those early eps so very poignant. *meep*

thank you for your kind words.

Hey, I had my poetry dissected for a whole semester. I recognize beautiful language when I see it. *grin* Whether I can emulate it is a whole other story. *chuckle*

It's true, and that's one of the reasons I love [livejournal.com profile] redial_the_gate. Other people point out things you missed the first time(s) around and it's marvelous to look back and see how far the characters have grown.

Daily he weighed the cost, but he could, at last, say to himself, “I live free,” instead of vowing only, as Bra’tac had taught him, to die free.

Oh, that is just fantastic.

And the whole thing is nostalgic and wistful and lonely and aching. How hard would it have been for Jack, too, to watch the kids learning karate?

Beautifully done!

Teal'c just totally breaks my heart seven ways from Sundays. His arc as a character through ten seasons is so amazing, and CJ does such an incredible job of giving him to us. He's been overshadowed for me by other characters in this fandom, but I find him so interesting. The IBARW stuff last year was my "window" into thinking more about him, and I look forward to writing more of him in the future.

Thank you for doing this. His friendship with Jack is probably my favorite thing about T, and a close second is trying to pick apart how he and Daniel came to be friends. Because they did. And that is nothing short of amazing.

Thanks for your kind words; glad you enjoyed it.

Oh, yeah. Word to both. That instant click Jack and Teal'c had, and the friendship Teal'c and Daniel share despite overwhelming odds.

And Sam! He's been conditioned to think of women as non-warriors, but he accepts Sam. That moment when he so gravely surrenders his staff weapon to her at the end of COTG? Absolutely awesome.

Really, how can anyone not just love them all to pieces? :)

I think this is lovely. It was a pleasure to read.

thank you so much for letting me know. It's always so intriguing to think about T.

Oh, this broke my heart. Teal'c gave up so much, didn't he? And I love how much Jack sees and shares here.

thank you so much. yeah, i've really let my obsession with J/D overshadow some of the explorations there are to enjoy of the other relationships on this team. Jack and T's friendship intrigues me so much. They really have so much in common.
