Giveaway of the Day is a very nice website that offers programs, free of charge, for 24 hours at a time. These range all over the place, from elaborate screensavers to DVD rip software to utilities programs. Some, obviously, are more useful than others, but it all depends on what you need, I suppose.

Today's giveaway is AWicons Pro, which is specifically designed to work with small graphics like buttons and icons. I'm no expert, but it looks like it might be a nice addition to Photoshop for those of you who enjoy designing icons. And anyway, for the next ten hours ago, the price is definitely right. :)

Take a look if you're interested. I had a little trouble registering, but I got there eventually. It's not enough to download it in the time frame, don't forget - you have to register it, too.

I'd say more that this is a good program for those who don't have Photoshop... I've been messing around with it for a few minutes, and haven't been terribly impressed. So far, it doesn't appear to do anything that Photoshop can't do better, and adding text is clunky and frustrating.

Now, what it IS good for is if someone wants to make a new desktop theme, and wants to make their own desktop icons... it's definitely ideal for that.

Edit: It's "free" for only 15 days, though... but is still a lot cheaper than Photoshop. I'd still recommend GIMPshop (http://www.gimpshop.com/) instead.

It's free for only 15 days if you don't register with the GAOTD name and registry.

You may be right that it's a Photoshop substitute and not for someone who understands all the technical details without have their hand held. I definitely don't qualify! ;) OTOH, it interests me that the program is specifically for small graphics.

And thanks for the recommendation of another program - that's always useful.

Ah! I found it... For me, the best part of this program is the Photoshop plug-in, which means I can design my graphic in Ps, then export it to this to give it the angle and glossy look of XP- and Vista-style icons.

As for GIMPshop, it's an Open Source program designed to mimic Ps as closely as possible, and it does pretty well.
