Yeah, yeah, I know it's the very first SG-1 audiobook and it's nearly three years old. But I listened to it tonight for the first time since I got it, and I never posted it about then, so here we are!

Gift of the Gods is read by Michael Shanks, who does a superb Jack and Sam (his Hammond felt more generic-Texan than George to me) and naturally a rather passable Daniel. ;) Early S3 teamy goodness -- Sam is still Captain -- some very handwaving technobabble, and a very SG-1ish feel. There's another voice actor, playing the part of a major from SG-12.

Best line from Jack, said by MS in a perfect Jack voice: "I don't think I want to live in a universe without the Simpsons." :) Seriously, there are a lot of very nice teamy touches in here. Sam and Daniel Wonder Twin moments abound -- in fact, there's more Sam and Daniel interaction than anyone else, I think. Great Jack and Daniel friendship ticks, from wordless exchanges to a simple hand on the shoulder. Teal'c, sadly, has a grand total of one line but does at least have a steady presence, and the Teal'c and Daniel friendship shines through. Daniel spends some time reflecting on the military -- still an outsider, but accepting its quirks, the familiar feel of a gun in his hand, and respecting the people who work at the SGC. His thoughts on George are superb. And the saddish ending with Daniel's determination to remember those who sacrificed is very well done to my mind.

Skip this next para if you don't want to know plot details!

The "science" is the kind of thing that would send Aby and Ultranos round the bend, possibly even more than Red Sky! On the other hand, the plot twist is not the one I expected, and that's always a good thing. When they first glimpse the other SGC, I suspected time travel -- that they were peering into their own reality's future, and they would have to somehow figure out how to prevent disaster. It was nice to be completely wrong. :) Yet there's a certain ache that's reminiscent of Moebius, too, because of the Daniel that's left and the Daniel that's lost and the ones that were left behind.

end of spoilers here!

All in all, I liked this one a lot. I've only listened to one other of the Big Finish SG-1 audiobooks, and that one was a lot less enjoyable for me. This one I would strongly recommend to anyone who likes Daniel and Sam and teamy goodness and friendship and sheer determination to do the right thing.

...Although I admit, hearing Daniel say "Goa'uld" with the proper pronunciation is downright weird, heh.

Honestly, compared to the science on some of the SGA Big Finish stories, this one didn't phase me (it fits within Stargate science, works well for the story, etc) and I think it (and the one Claudia Black reads that Shanks is a second on) are my two favorite of the ones I've listened to. I also had a moment of confusion when Daniel was shocked at seeing his own death, until I realized it was early enough he wasn't used to that yet :)

And, yeah, I've seen people (including the Big Finish people) made a big deal about how MS has a GREAT Hammond impression, but it sounds really poor to me. *shrugs* His Jack and Sam are much better. He's also got that Daniel guy down pretty well.
