I've been kinda... wallowing in the awesomeness of Teal'c lately. I recced Teal'c fic for
stargateficrec back in January, Teal'c and Daniel friendship fic last month, Teal'c and Jack friendship fic this month, and I'll be doing Teal'c and Sam friendship recs next month. And, of course, there's Teal'c Alphabet Soup, which will be simmering and ready to serve on July 8 for SG-1 Gen Fic Day!
And then there's Into the Fire, the Season Three opener.
redial_the_gate goes live today with Season Three.
Teal'c is so incredible in this episode. We get the first rendition of "False god. Dead false god." Until now, he's been a rumor in the dark, the shol'va, the silent inspiration to those Jaffa who might have wondered about their allegiance. But this is the first time we see him actively lead, challenging others to change their way of thinking and take that first dangerous step into the glorious potential of their future.
Then there's Hammond, who is the kind of man who can inspire the greatest of heroics, because anyone can be do anything with a guy like that as commander. I love him supporting Teal'c, and his easy rapport with Bra'tac, and that gleeful, "Yee-haw!" complete with Teal'c's raised eyebrow of bemusement. Oh, George. We were lucky to have you for seven years!
And this is our first introduction to Paul Davis. (ETA: Oops! Thanks,
redrikki, for pointing out in the comments that we actually first meet him in A Matter of Time. He's just a guy in a cute cap there, though. This is when we first get to to know him.) I actually like that he's not entirely likeable here; as
pepper_field commented when we were discussing Out of Mind, Davis actually resists the idea of going in to rescue SG-1 - he actually says, "They're only one team." But then Hammond (George, squee!) looks him in the eye and flatly tells him, "You've got a lot to learn about the way we do things around here." And you know what? David does learn. He takes what he witnesses and applies it, until he grows to become one of fandom's favorite minor characters. I would postulate that it's because anyone who works closely with Hammond for any length of time can't help but be improved by osmosis... but then how do we explain Maybourne? :)
Come redial the Gate with us! Season Three may come in second to my favorite (which is Season Two, natch), but it's a very close second. Lots of great eps. Lots of intriguing meta posts proposed. Come and join us for the squee!
