It's been a relatively quiet month, but here's the November round-up: recs, fandom, and meta.

This month, I did two categories over at [livejournal.com profile] stargateficrec: Gen and Futurefic. The links here are to the archive at [livejournal.com profile] figs_sg1_rec, but they were all first posted at [livejournal.com profile] stargateficrec, where they're always looking for more reccers to spread the squee. Go, sign up to rec four stories in your favorite category!

The master list of fic recs, which is now amazingly current, is split in two because of LJ posting constraints: fics titled A-M and fics titled N-Z. If you want to search by character or genre, try [livejournal.com profile] figs_sg1_rec.

Gen recs

Diplomacy, by Night Spear (PG-13)

Five Joint Missions, Post Retrograde, by Martha Wilson (PG-13)

Hit the Road, by Annerb (G)

Bad Pennies, by Salieri (G)

Previous gen recs can be found here, here, here, and here, although really, any rec over at [livejournal.com profile] figs_sg1_rec will be gen, unless it's specifically tagged as having a pairing.

Futurefic recs

Cornerstone, by Mrspollifax (G)

Unfinished Business #6, by Tallulah Rasa (PG)

Next Steps, by Paian (G)

As Planned, by Tallulah Rasa (PG)

I've recced several futurefic stories in the past, and many of them are favorites of mine:

Almost a Statesman, by KatieM (PG). An AU futurefic for Teal'c, with marvelous Ry'ac voice.

A Million Years Into the Sky, by Niamaea (PG). My favorite futurefic ever. Sam's story first, then Teal'c's, as the members of SG-1 go slowly, one at a time, gently into that good night... and discover that the universe really does look after her children. Stunning. Includes peripheral ship.

They Won’t Fade Away, by Svendra (PG). Fun teamfic - S10 plus Jack.

Golden, by Knightshade (PG). Haunting Jack and Teal'c friendship fic, set in the alternate timeline of the Aschen.

$14.95 Plus Tax / Shipping and Handling, by Ael L. Bolt. Short, funny ficlets, in which the team gets to contemplate their action figures!

Mission: Improbable, by Niamaea (PG). Hilarious teamfic in which they take on the Ori in their own unique way.

Taking Leave, by Niamaea (PG). Sweet, lovely friendship fic for Sam and Teal'c and Daniel.

Ithaca, by Niamaea (G). I'm sensing a trend, here... This is delicious Teal'c and Daniel friendship, in a future I would love to see happen.

The God of Poets has Two Hands, by Minxy (PG). Thoughtful futurefic with Bra'tac, echoing an ep from S10.

Journey of a Thousand Years, by Abyssis (G). Sam and Bra'tac, sharing a quiet chat about baby steps and change.

The View From Up Here, by Annerb (G). Sha're and Sam friendship, as the SGC goes public.

Fandom

The [livejournal.com profile] galpalficathon went live! Check out the comm for some nice Sam and Vala fics, and Sam and Janet fics, too.

[livejournal.com profile] redial_the_gate finished S3 - we're starting S4 next week. The S4 icon challenge is currently running, and there's Aurora great trivia quiz to take - the quiz is here, and the answers are here.

For the rarer ship fans, voting for the Isis Awards is currently open.

The Stargate Fan Awards seem to be currently open for nominations - I do wish they'd be a little more proactive in spreading the word, although the Isis team is even worse! I can't seem to navigate around the site, though. Tejas, if you're reading this - a little help here?

ETA: Tejas clarifies below that the reason we can't navigate on the site yet is that the noms aren't actually open yet! Looks like it'll be soon, though, since nominations are only through the end of December.

And the Stargate Music Vid Awards will be announcing the nominees over the weekend, with voting scheduled to begin on December 7th.

Meta

I finally had the chance to write the Daniel and Bra'tac meta I've always wanted to do! Now complete with screencaps of Bra'tac biting Daniel's hand. :)

And for the first time in five months, a new canon vs. fanon meta got posted - my second Jack-centric one! Bored Jack, sports, knees, and some completely unsupported fanon bits. Raise your hand if you think I'll actually manage another one before the end of the calendar year...

...Yeah. Me, too. :)

I'd love to know how to put in nominations on the Stargate Fan Awards site, because I can't figure it out. :S

I did figure out the Isis voting, finally. It's a little confusing though.

I can log in at SFA, but then - nothing. No links, nowhere to go.

You're up on me with the Isis voting! I'm just trying to spread the word. :)

Huh, fan awards again? Maybe they're working on getting going - last year they were good at announcements.

Isis awards are weirding me out - I have one story there (yay) but it's in the "AU" category and isn't an AU. *ponders*

I need to go play with the Jack meta.

Noms for last year's fan awards closed their nominations - eh, sometime in June, I think. I distinctly remember it was right before the Sam and Daniel ficathon went live. That's quite a while ago, even though the actual voting process dragged out, and the announcement of who won dragged out even longer. They had to deal with something like 17,000 (!) votes, IIRC.

The Isis awards have very little input from the nominees. Were you informed you had a fic nominated? I know that last year, I didn't get notified at all - not for being nominated, not for winning 2nd place. So it's not as if you would've had the chance to clarify.

Go play with Jack meta! You'll love the current theory re Kelowna buried in the comments. :)

Isis awards told me nothing either, and I only found out I got first place in something because I was bored and curious and wandered over to their site.
Wednesday, November 26th, 2008 09:51 pm (UTC)
Yeah, that seems to be the way Isis works.

Mind you, as far as I can tell, they have no LJ presence. But e-mails to the winnes, at the very least... why go to the trouble of creating a banner if the winner never even knows about it?

Kudos to them, though, for running the awards - it's good to see the small niches getting their moment in the spotlight.

(We need an Isis awards for gen, heh.)

Seriously. Not that I'm volunteering, but that would be awesome. *g*

Awesome indeed! Someday, maybe... :)

It'd have to be named differently, though. :P Isis was a love goddess, I think. I'm trying to think of what Egyptian deity might represent gen. 's a bit hard. ;)
Thursday, November 27th, 2008 06:41 am (UTC)
Hee! Nothing in the Egyptian or Greek pantheons would qualify...

Oh, no! The Awards are not yet open for nominations!!!!!

There will be an announcement made when the time comes. We'll hit most of the Stargate mailing lists as well as [livejournal.com profile] sgfanawardsinfo.

We had to change hosting sites this year which turned out to be a far bigger hassle than anyone anticipated, then we had a hurricane (the webmaster was run out of her home for several weeks due to Ike). Now we're dealing with all the last minute problems that inevitably crop up when you're trying to automate as much as possible due to the size of the "customer base".

So, hang in there.

Thanks for the clarification! The website does say that noms are open between now and December 31 - I found it when I clicked there by accident. :)

Also, just to clarify, as Daniel would say: does the team intend to restrict noms to fanworks that were created since the last awards only? Some of the phrasing about the timing suggets that.
Thursday, November 27th, 2008 06:52 am (UTC)
On nomination restriction: Not that I'm aware of, but I've been busy and need to check back in and see what rules changes everyone else agreed to. ;-) RL butts in at the worst possible times. :-)

I'll try to get something posted to the awards LJ on Friday.
