Happy Gen Fic Day, everybody!

Reply to this entry with commentfic, drabbles, links to new works or WIPs, fic recs, and meta - anything, as long as it's gen and SG-1.

Confused? See the Gen Fic Day index for previous events!

Since there's no Alphabet Soup this time, I'm asking for some comprehensive reccing, instead. (Aside from all the new fic you've all written, heh.) All recs are welcome, of course, but I am specifically asking that everyone try to comment with two recs: an old friend that you love to reread over and over again, and shameless self-promotion of one of your own fics, with a sentence or two as a teaser. I'm not asking for your personal favorite (I know how impossible that is!); rather, I'd like to see people rec a personal fic that you think readers will enjoy. I'll start off the comments below myself, to serve as an example.

This post will remain open for submissions until Tuesday morning my time, which is midnight or so on the West Coast in the States. After that, I'll post a second entry to round up all the contributions into a coherent whole, including all those personal recs with teaser lines.

Spread the word! Write! Post! Comment! Squee! Have fun. :)

ETA, because it's apparently necessary: of course I don't mind new people wandering in to join us! The more gen squee, the better. :)

Oh, good! I've been waiting for this!

You'll note that these are all Daniel-centric. What can I say? :-) He's my weakness. :-)

Old Friend: Sparrow (http://www.travellingone.com/sparrow.htm), by Travelling One. All of her stories are excellent, but this one always rises to the top for me. It's not a particularly easy read at times, but it's well worth it. What if they'd never gone back to the planet in Fire and Water? What if Nem never let Daniel go? This story deals with the repercussions of Daniel being alone for years in Nem's underwater lab until something occurs to trigger the rest of his team's memories.

Shameless Self-Promotion: Battle Cry (http://www.stargatefan.com/archives/viewstory.php?sid=31), by tejas. In keeping with my first rec, I thought I'd rec my most 'military' Daniel story. In this, the team is caught in the middle of a civil war on a new planet and after being separated by the fighting, Daniel has to get a severely injured Jack back to the gate. While it sounds like a heavy action story, in many ways, it's more of a character study as Daniel questions who, and what, he has become in his years with the SGC.

Excerpt from Dr. Daniel Jackson's personal journal:

To this day I don't know how I did it. I used the last of the elastic bandages and our belts to wrap the sleeping bag as tightly around Jack's wound as possible. It was the only thing I could think of to keep from leaving a blood trail. We both stank of blood as it was, but after watching Teal'c and Jack track wounded enemies, I knew better than to leave an obvious trail. At the time, I'm always glad I know this stuff, but later, when I'm sitting safe at home, I find myself growing more and more alarmed at this new body of knowledge I'm acquiring.

NEW Friend: Cadeuces Circle (http://www.members.tripod.com/tivester/caduceuscircle.htm), by [livejournal.com profile] captain_tiv. This is one of the finest "Daniel in Charge" stories I've ever read. Tiv was inspired by the legend of the Lost Battalion in WWI, and she pulled it off in a remarkable fashion. On a supposedly peaceful planet, Daniel leads a group of scientists, with green military support (there to bond as a team and get some experience with scientific missions) to investigate a possible Ancient site. Before they can figure out the secret, Daniel is faced with being the only experienced fighter when their position is attacked by Jaffa sent by the Goa'uld who used to rule the planet.

Fig, I'm sorry but I still have nothing to offer except these recs as requested, there are no creative juices flowing...

Old Friend: Under Fire (http://vikingchick.gyrfalcon.net/underfire.htm) by Strix Varia. It's early classic team - Sam centered - that I've never quite been able to put my finger on why I love it and re-read it constantly. It has a little bit of everything and such a beautiful Sam voice. You've probably all read it already but go read it again.

Shameless Self promotion: Y is for Yield (http://uniquinum.livejournal.com/66461.html#cutid1). My contribution to the Teal'c alphabet Soup. It's my favourite simply because I never thought I would be able to truly do Teal'c justice. I proved myself wrong with this piece.

Snippit: Exploring with his teammates became not just a job, a way to defeat the false Gods or to rescue Sha're and Skarra, it was a joy. It proved to him that life prevailed and nothing could stamp down the purest things that life and the universe had to offer. They, like every other creature in the universe was deeply flawed and yet he was more than willing to overlook O'Neill's impatience and sarcastic nature, Daniel Jackson's innate mulishness and one track mindedness, and finally the belief Captain Carter carried that she somehow had something to prove that she would never be good enough, he was well aware that should any of them be anything other than what they truly are they may not have been as successful as they were.

(I had to post this again, because I messed up the HTML the first time. Argh.)

An old friend: You Can't Always Get What You Want, by [livejournal.com profile] betacandy. PG-13. This is one of my top five favorite fics. It takes Moebius and fixes it, and even ties up the loose ends from an episode in S7 (hey, it's time travel, right?). Long and utterly satisfying! Previously recced here.

Shameless self-promotion: Shopping Trip, rated PG. Jacob and Selmac take SG-1 on an off-world shopping trip with a stolen Goa'uld credit card:

Jack, Teal'c, Sam, and Daniel looked at one another. Silent communication passed rapidly between them, aided only by minute hand gestures - a few regulation Air Force ones, a few unique to SG-1, and at least two that were obscene.

fic recs are definitely good, so thank you!

And second on the Under Fire rec. I love that one, too - a superb team fic and awesome Sam fic.
Monday, February 2nd, 2009 07:47 am (UTC)
Hurray for fic recs, both old friends and new ones!
Monday, February 2nd, 2009 07:48 am (UTC)
I'll see if I can't come up with a drabble or something tomorrow.
Monday, February 2nd, 2009 08:43 am (UTC)
I love yer 'Battle Cry'. Other than that, I don't think I would know how to even READ gen. *hangs head in closed-minded, slashy shame*
Monday, February 2nd, 2009 08:45 am (UTC)
Give the others a shot. Seriously. They're excellent.

And... *BEAM* I love that fic. :-)

I would like to rec as an old and very very dear friend...

Mine Eyes Have Seen (http://eve11.livejournal.com/260672.html) by Eve11, a spare, crystalline, harshly beautiful AU from Meridian, and yes, my favourite Stargate story of all I've read.

Self-promotion isn't really warranted, given my tiny output (shamefaced excuses, possibly - one ficlet, two drabbles, and a few crossover dialogues that make no sense to anyone, even me. I'm slow :) but being obedient, here is a link to said first, unnamed and deeply nonsensical ficlet (http://sallymn.livejournal.com/149273.html)...

"Colonel." That was Hammond, still in command, still trying to guide the most surreal briefing they'd had for... oh, at least three weeks, wasn't it? And as always trying to stop Jack from saying something they'd all regret in front of the alien VIPs. He never succeeded, but Jack had to give him points for trying.

Hope you don't mind a stranger popping in. I think this is a wonderful idea. Gen fic is what got me into SG1 fandom, and got me writing. So, for your consideration, I offer my WIP, called The Sun on the Horizon. It's novel sized, a proposed four book set of stories starting with Daniel kidnapped and tossed into a lovely web of intrigue. There's lots of HC, action, mythology given an SG twist, and many familiar faces mixed with new ones. Book one and two are done and can be found here: http://capricesesh.googlepages.com/sun

Here's a snippet - Dawn broke. Daniel tore his eyes from the living and stared, desperately, fervently, at the frozen image of a dead human, made a god by pretenders to that same title.
Eshmun stared out over the writhing sea of human bodies, sightless eyes encompassing far horizons and truths, buried in the passage of time. For a moment, Daniel felt the statue’s eyes upon him and the paths of two lost travellers inextricably merged into one.

And I'd like to rec an old friend. True to Form by Jb. For me this is the ultimate SG1 HC Gen fic. It blew me away the first time I read it, (on an overnight train going to see Michael Shanks at a con for the first time) and it is my standby, my comfort fic, the one I reach for when I want to wallow in the brilliance that is SG1. http://www.omnifera.com/tablet/jb.htm

Thank you.

I adore Sparrow. It made me cry. And Cadeuces Circle is a wonderful work. Bookmarking Battle Cry. ;-)

Hello! I'm newish around these parts and hope you don't mind me dropping in :)

Reccing an old friend: In the Name of Science (http://www.shahrazad.net/~sgnovels/storiesi/inthenameofscience.txt) by Pho

After adding the coffee to the filter, he lifted the pot out of the sink, and promptly doubled over, the sudden pain in his stomach almost overwhelming. The glass shattered as the pot hit the floor, followed by the young archaeologist. His last conscious thought was that he knew how to translate the mystery text.

Shameless self promotion: Dislocate (http://petite-stars.livejournal.com/22965.html) by me!

I finished it just in time to post for today ;) Sam and Daniel friendship, with the whole team included. Deal with the tension between Sam and Daniel after Daniel descends.

The packet of chocolate cookies, hidden in her cupboard, were still within the use-by date, and she opened them up. She bit into one; they were Daniel’s favourite flavour, chocolate walnut. Or they used to be his favourite flavour, she wondered bitterly if that’d changed too since he’d descended.

Looking forward to more gen recs!

Fic snippet: Instead of being angry, he laughs. “I’m not marrying Sam so you old manipulators-both of you-can have grandchildren.”

http://www.stargatefan.com/fictionms/Hardwired.htm

Old favorite: Hardwired by iiionly. Wonderful look at a newly descended Daniel and his struggles to fit into a life no longer his.

Here's my offering for Gen Fic Day. It's a short piece called Magnetism and it's actually something I wrote ages ago but never got around to posting.

http://gategremlyn.livejournal.com/4177.html

I'll be back later this evening with a rec and a shameless self promotion.
Monday, February 2nd, 2009 01:14 pm (UTC)
I love everything Eve writes! Great choice.

Off to read your ficlet... :)
Monday, February 2nd, 2009 01:37 pm (UTC)
Welcome, and thanks for chiming in!

And oooh, yes on TTF. I've always said Jb's fics can be summarized by two words: OUCH and GOOD. :)
Monday, February 2nd, 2009 01:41 pm (UTC)
Yay new fic! Yay old friends!

Off to read. :)
Monday, February 2nd, 2009 01:57 pm (UTC)
Yay for new stories, and great recs!

::bounces off to read::
Monday, February 2nd, 2009 02:01 pm (UTC)
Hope you like it! If you lose your bookmark, for whatever reason, you can always find it on my master list on my LJ. Just be aware, I wrote a slash version of the same story (it was an exercise, worked pretty well, too, if I do say so myself). But I have my stuff separated by gen and slash, so it'll be easy to find the one you want.

Sparrow *always* brings me to tears and yet is so beautifully done.

I can't wait for this summer so I can reread "Circle" again. That should be a long enough wait before the next reread. :-)

Woot! New fic! Yay!

Old Friend: This one never fails to make me smile. The Furlings' Gift Series (http://www.thealphagate.com/viewseries.php?seriesid=99) by Amperage and Livengoo. The Furlings make Daniel a kid. He's never going to forgive them for it and, the way things are going, either is his team. *g*

Shameless Self-Promotion: Small Problems. Live Journal Post (http://cat-77.livejournal.com/143703.html) about it, but it's actually hosted on my page (http://cat.beltran.nu/small/small1.html) due to the size. It's extremely long and extremely gen and another kid fic, of a sort. Daniel and Sam are the most effected, Teal'c's a bit effected, and Jack's caught in the middle.

“You know,” Daniel said as he swung his feet back and forth beneath the table. “I don’t think I can touch the ground in this chair.”

“Well, you are small for your age,” Sam agreed dryly. She sat with her chin propped in one hand and the other fussing with the large hem of her shirt sleeve.
Monday, February 2nd, 2009 02:36 pm (UTC)
Yeah, just pretend I used the correct version of effected/affected up there, okay? *head desk*

Old Friends

Heroes: the Story of the SGC (http://www.stargatefan.com/fictionms/HeroesFix.htm) (by Purple Shrub)

This "Heroes" fix delves into details that the episode didn't or couldn't cover more fully, including Sam's reaction to being accused of sleeping with her boss and the ethical implications of hiding scientific discoveries. It seems more realistic than the episode to me without losing any of the gravity.

"Broken Dreams, Shattered Memories" series (http://www.geocities.com/celtic_mysts/Beyond_Blue.html) (by Kerri)
The story of how a descended Daniel regains his memories.

Shameless Self-Promotion

Translations (http://night-spear1287.livejournal.com/9339.html) and sequels

"Sir," Jack said, "I regret to inform you that Claire and Melburn Jackson were killed in the attack on Abydos. They are survived by their son, Daniel, who was kidnapped by the aliens, along with two of the native Abydons."

These are the only fics I've written in this universe so far, so... The "Daniel of Abydos" AU series assumes Daniel's parents opened the Stargate fifteen years ago and that he was born on Abydos. Apophis attacks his home when he's fourteen, the Abydos 'gate is buried, and he ends up stranded on Earth but determined to join the SGC's cause.

It will be a great day when our schools get all the money they need and the Air Force has to hold a bake sale to buy a bomber. (http://archiveofourown.org/en/works/2650)

I usually count on other people for recs, but I'll offer one that I have bookmarked, Which I think I got from one of fig's recs! :)

Bad Pennies (http://troyswann.livejournal.com/652395.html?format=light): A MacGyver/SG-1 crossover that's joy. Author: [livejournal.com profile] troyswann

I have nothing new completed at the moment, so I'll shamelessly self-promote an old one from me. Birthday (http://suzannemarie.livejournal.com/128556.html) is the very first fic I ever did, so I'll always feel nostalgic about it. A Jack-Sara (gen) story sandwiched around a team mission offworld.
