Happy Gen Fic Day, everybody!
Reply to this entry with commentfic, drabbles, links to new works or WIPs, fic recs, and meta - anything, as long as it's gen and SG-1.
Confused? See the Gen Fic Day index for previous events!
Since there's no Alphabet Soup this time, I'm asking for some comprehensive reccing, instead. (Aside from all the new fic you've all written, heh.) All recs are welcome, of course, but I am specifically asking that everyone try to comment with two recs: an old friend that you love to reread over and over again, and shameless self-promotion of one of your own fics, with a sentence or two as a teaser. I'm not asking for your personal favorite (I know how impossible that is!); rather, I'd like to see people rec a personal fic that you think readers will enjoy. I'll start off the comments below myself, to serve as an example.
This post will remain open for submissions until Tuesday morning my time, which is midnight or so on the West Coast in the States. After that, I'll post a second entry to round up all the contributions into a coherent whole, including all those personal recs with teaser lines.
Spread the word! Write! Post! Comment! Squee! Have fun. :)
ETA, because it's apparently necessary: of course I don't mind new people wandering in to join us! The more gen squee, the better. :)

You'll note that these are all Daniel-centric. What can I say? :-) He's my weakness. :-)
Old Friend: Sparrow (http://www.travellingone.com/sparrow.htm), by Travelling One. All of her stories are excellent, but this one always rises to the top for me. It's not a particularly easy read at times, but it's well worth it. What if they'd never gone back to the planet in Fire and Water? What if Nem never let Daniel go? This story deals with the repercussions of Daniel being alone for years in Nem's underwater lab until something occurs to trigger the rest of his team's memories.
Shameless Self-Promotion: Battle Cry (http://www.stargatefan.com/archives/viewstory.php?sid=31), by tejas. In keeping with my first rec, I thought I'd rec my most 'military' Daniel story. In this, the team is caught in the middle of a civil war on a new planet and after being separated by the fighting, Daniel has to get a severely injured Jack back to the gate. While it sounds like a heavy action story, in many ways, it's more of a character study as Daniel questions who, and what, he has become in his years with the SGC.
Excerpt from Dr. Daniel Jackson's personal journal:
To this day I don't know how I did it. I used the last of the elastic bandages and our belts to wrap the sleeping bag as tightly around Jack's wound as possible. It was the only thing I could think of to keep from leaving a blood trail. We both stank of blood as it was, but after watching Teal'c and Jack track wounded enemies, I knew better than to leave an obvious trail. At the time, I'm always glad I know this stuff, but later, when I'm sitting safe at home, I find myself growing more and more alarmed at this new body of knowledge I'm acquiring.

Old Friend: Under Fire (http://vikingchick.gyrfalcon.net/underfire.htm) by Strix Varia. It's early classic team - Sam centered - that I've never quite been able to put my finger on why I love it and re-read it constantly. It has a little bit of everything and such a beautiful Sam voice. You've probably all read it already but go read it again.
Shameless Self promotion: Y is for Yield (http://uniquinum.livejournal.com/66461.html#cutid1). My contribution to the Teal'c alphabet Soup. It's my favourite simply because I never thought I would be able to truly do Teal'c justice. I proved myself wrong with this piece.
Snippit: Exploring with his teammates became not just a job, a way to defeat the false Gods or to rescue Sha're and Skarra, it was a joy. It proved to him that life prevailed and nothing could stamp down the purest things that life and the universe had to offer. They, like every other creature in the universe was deeply flawed and yet he was more than willing to overlook O'Neill's impatience and sarcastic nature, Daniel Jackson's innate mulishness and one track mindedness, and finally the belief Captain Carter carried that she somehow had something to prove that she would never be good enough, he was well aware that should any of them be anything other than what they truly are they may not have been as successful as they were.

Shameless self-promotion: Shopping Trip, rated PG. Jacob and Selmac take SG-1 on an off-world shopping trip with a stolen Goa'uld credit card:
Jack, Teal'c, Sam, and Daniel looked at one another. Silent communication passed rapidly between them, aided only by minute hand gestures - a few regulation Air Force ones, a few unique to SG-1, and at least two that were obscene.

Mine Eyes Have Seen (http://eve11.livejournal.com/260672.html) by Eve11, a spare, crystalline, harshly beautiful AU from Meridian, and yes, my favourite Stargate story of all I've read.
Self-promotion isn't really warranted, given my tiny output (shamefaced excuses, possibly - one ficlet, two drabbles, and a few crossover dialogues that make no sense to anyone, even me. I'm slow :) but being obedient, here is a link to said first, unnamed and deeply nonsensical ficlet (http://sallymn.livejournal.com/149273.html)...
"Colonel." That was Hammond, still in command, still trying to guide the most surreal briefing they'd had for... oh, at least three weeks, wasn't it? And as always trying to stop Jack from saying something they'd all regret in front of the alien VIPs. He never succeeded, but Jack had to give him points for trying.

Off to read your ficlet... :)

Here's a snippet - Dawn broke. Daniel tore his eyes from the living and stared, desperately, fervently, at the frozen image of a dead human, made a god by pretenders to that same title.
Eshmun stared out over the writhing sea of human bodies, sightless eyes encompassing far horizons and truths, buried in the passage of time. For a moment, Daniel felt the statue’s eyes upon him and the paths of two lost travellers inextricably merged into one.
And I'd like to rec an old friend. True to Form by Jb. For me this is the ultimate SG1 HC Gen fic. It blew me away the first time I read it, (on an overnight train going to see Michael Shanks at a con for the first time) and it is my standby, my comfort fic, the one I reach for when I want to wallow in the brilliance that is SG1. http://www.omnifera.com/tablet/jb.htm
Thank you.

After adding the coffee to the filter, he lifted the pot out of the sink, and promptly doubled over, the sudden pain in his stomach almost overwhelming. The glass shattered as the pot hit the floor, followed by the young archaeologist. His last conscious thought was that he knew how to translate the mystery text.
Shameless self promotion: Dislocate (http://petite-stars.livejournal.com/22965.html) by me!
I finished it just in time to post for today ;) Sam and Daniel friendship, with the whole team included. Deal with the tension between Sam and Daniel after Daniel descends.
The packet of chocolate cookies, hidden in her cupboard, were still within the use-by date, and she opened them up. She bit into one; they were Daniel’s favourite flavour, chocolate walnut. Or they used to be his favourite flavour, she wondered bitterly if that’d changed too since he’d descended.
Looking forward to more gen recs!

Shameless Self-Promotion: Small Problems. Live Journal Post (http://cat-77.livejournal.com/143703.html) about it, but it's actually hosted on my page (http://cat.beltran.nu/small/small1.html) due to the size. It's extremely long and extremely gen and another kid fic, of a sort. Daniel and Sam are the most effected, Teal'c's a bit effected, and Jack's caught in the middle.
“You know,” Daniel said as he swung his feet back and forth beneath the table. “I don’t think I can touch the ground in this chair.”
“Well, you are small for your age,” Sam agreed dryly. She sat with her chin propped in one hand and the other fussing with the large hem of her shirt sleeve.

Heroes: the Story of the SGC (http://www.stargatefan.com/fictionms/HeroesFix.htm) (by Purple Shrub)
This "Heroes" fix delves into details that the episode didn't or couldn't cover more fully, including Sam's reaction to being accused of sleeping with her boss and the ethical implications of hiding scientific discoveries. It seems more realistic than the episode to me without losing any of the gravity.

"Sir," Jack said, "I regret to inform you that Claire and Melburn Jackson were killed in the attack on Abydos. They are survived by their son, Daniel, who was kidnapped by the aliens, along with two of the native Abydons."
These are the only fics I've written in this universe so far, so... The "Daniel of Abydos" AU series assumes Daniel's parents opened the Stargate fifteen years ago and that he was born on Abydos. Apophis attacks his home when he's fourteen, the Abydos 'gate is buried, and he ends up stranded on Earth but determined to join the SGC's cause.

I realized this morning that I hadn't gotten all my gen archived over on stargatefan.com. In the process of getting caught up, I reread a couple and I always forget how much I like Xeno-Stuff (http://www.thealphagate.com/viewstory.php?sid=3730). It's from last year's "Daniel A to Z", I believe and I'm inordinately proud of it. Mostly because it makes me laugh. Most of the humor I write is slash, so this is different for me.
snippet:
"Welcome back, Daniel." Janet's voice startled me.
"Was I gone?" Why can't I remember what happened? "What happened?" I took comfort in her manner, but still couldn't remember how I got here.
"As I understand it, the first step in trade negotiations is what happened." Janet paused while she took my pulse and checked the machines I seem to always be hooked to. I wonder if they're the same ones every time. "As for being gone, let's just say, you, or rather your blood, has made several researchers very happy." She grinned at me and I started getting a very bad feeling about what I couldn't remember. I've seen that twinkle in Janet's eyes. I don't trust it any farther than I can throw Teal'c.
"I have. I have? Janet, what aren't you telling me?" I felt pretty confident there's nothing terribly wrong with me. Janet wouldn't be teasing me if I was dying or purple or, wait. She would tease me if I was purple. I took a quick look at my hand. Okay normal color.
"Is there something wrong with your hand, Daniel?" She checked the IV.
"No. No. Nothing wrong." Great, now she's giving me that look. "So, why am I here and where are Jack, Sam and Teal'c?"

Fragments (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/4271893/1/Fragments), by
He polled his brain for details of whatever mishap had put him back in the infirmary, and came up with a bigger blank than usual. PX-something, trees, a temple building, Carter babbling about energy signals... They could be mission memories, but they could equally well be SG-1's greatest hits. Nothing specific was swimming to the forefront.
Okay. Time for the body to check in. Item the first: honking great headache. Item the second: catheter. Yay. Item the third: knees? Jack tested them, and found no worse than the usual lingering ache.
Nothing else was ringing the alarm bells, so the smart money went down on head injury. Again.

Sadly, they were interrupted before Jonas could get more details about the rest of SG-1. But after Jonas's first trip into space, he returned to find an anonymous printout in his locker. His immediate impulse – to say out loud, "What's this?", and to start reading – was curbed when he saw the names on the sheet. Glancing behind him to where the Colonel and Teal'c were changing, he swiftly folded the sheet and tucked it casually into his pocket.

Old favourite:Slow Burn (http://www.cleothemuse.net/fanfiction/viewstory.php?sid=35) by
As the bushes rustle again, I grimly wrap the blood-slicked fingers of my left hand around the barrel of the MP-5, holding the muzzle as steady as I could manage—which isn't much. Still, Colonel Jack O'Neill will not go down without putting up one hell of a fight.
"Uh, don't shoot," mutters an oh-so-familiar voice.
"Damn it, Daniel," I growl, letting the barrel dip back down to the ground as an olive drab boonie hat pokes its way through the undergrowth. "I thought I told you to get the hell out of here!"
He doesn't even try to look chagrined in the slightest. "Nooooo," he begins, dragging out the word in a way I know means I'm not going to like what's coming next. "Actually, you told me to get Sam and Teal'c to the Stargate. Which I did, then came back to get you."

I love good gen ep tags, and Joag's Extra Mile (http://pages.videotron.com/whump2/extramile.html) is one of my absolute favorites. Joag is also one of the masters of Danny whumping, another genre favorite of mine. And when the two come together, well its just goodness all around.
Daniel heard the wonder in her voice when she next said, "General, you came through the Stargate for us," and Daniel knew then she had never figured out they were on Earth. God, all she'd needed to do was dial another ‘gate address, to one of their allies, and they'd have been able to travel through the ‘gate and gotten help.

If I had to pick a favorite, it would still probably be this one. Sacrifices (http://community.livejournal.com/quaintdiversion/2566.html) is an episode tag to Season 7's Fallout.
“Dr. Jackson! Wait!” She stepped up her pace, determined to make Daniel listen. Daniel considered not stopping; his emotions were on the edge. A tap on his shoulder drained his determination to leave, and he quickly turned around to face First Minister Dreylock. “Dr. Jackson, surely what was said back there isn’t true! You’re not just going to give up?”
Those words turned hurt into anger inside of Daniel. He glared at her, straight into her eyes, but for several moments he stood there silent. He did want to give up. He was sick of all of this petty bickering. Daniel opened his mouth to say something and quickly shut it again after a moment. “There is nothing more I can do for you First Minister. At some point the three of you will have to settle your differences and stop thinking that you can keep going on like this.

Shameless Self-Pimpage: The mahvelous Thraesja already pimped one of my fav fics so I'll go with A Stitch in Time (http://cleothemuse-fic.livejournal.com/38411.html). A down-sized Daniel Jackson plus a furry blue alien named Stitch? Minnesota will never be the same.
Excerpt: Jack sprang from the chair next to the window, scooping Daniel up into the air and jumping away from the blue creature. He gave it a look of mixed revulsion and curiosity. "What is that thing?"
"A dog... I think!" she exclaimed, wrapping her arms around its torso and holding it back from Daniel. "But it was dead this morning!"
"It was dead this morning?" Jack echoed.
"Well, we thought it was dead... it was hit by a truck!"
"Truck-proof dog!" Daniel grinned, squirming out Jack's grasp and landing on the floor with a thump. "C'mere!"
Needing no further encouragement, the creature crawled across the floor on all-fours, dragging Madeline with him. Jack put out a booted foot to stop it from getting any closer, once again lifting Daniel into the air and setting him on his feet in the chair behind him. "Daniel..."
"Jack," he replied in kind, crossing his arms. This kind of battle, he knew how to win, having fought similar ones in the past. Yes, Jack, we need to bring this artifact back with us. Yes, Jack, we should help these people solve this historical mystery. Yes, Jack, we should free the Unas from enslavement.
"Daniel."
He lifted his chin, squared his shoulders, and armed himself with the last weapon in his arsenal. "Please?"

This isn't my best SG story, but it's one of the only ones that stands completely alone, and it's archived in an out-of-the-way place.
Snippet:
"Holy Hannah." Carter unclipped her flashlight and switched it on. Instead of disappearing under the bright beam, a film of darkness, of misty black, trickled over and around Jack's bare wrist and fingers. If it had sat still, it might have seemed like a stain of dirt or ashes. But it was in motion, sliding over his skin.
