I have the immense privilege of tagging for [livejournal.com profile] sg1_debrief, which mostly entails skimming through the newsletter's flist in search of gen fic. (The maintainers do the really hard work, and I think the other taggers cope with a lot more volume than I do.) There's always less gen fic than ship fic, but I'm resigned to that as par for the course by now.

But what's going on here, people?

Since the 17th, there has been one gen fic posted throughout all of LJ SG-1 fandom that gets tagged for the newsletter. ONE. (Thanks for that, [livejournal.com profile] dknightshade! I don't follow the [livejournal.com profile] jack_built AU, but it was a fun snippet.)

So here's my appeal: write some gen fic today, please! It can be commentfic posted here, or a drabble on your LJ, or a snippet of your current WIP. Fic recs are good, too, like the ones posted below: here and here. Anything. Gen is the one kind of fic that embraces all aspects of the fandom, so let's have some SG-1 love!

Erm... but not that kind. :)

[And yes, I'll try to post something ficcish myself today. I can't ask for it if I don't chip in myself, right?]

ETA8: Monday, 6:45 p.m. ::smushes all ETAs together:: I've compiled a roundup of all the fantastic participants! You can find the complete list for Gen Fic Day right here.

I have a long genfic in the works, which will either end up a novel or a novella, depending on how you count it. (Some sites say 30000+ is a novel, some say 50000+.) Unfortunately I'm only about 65% done and I've been working on it for almost three years, but I've been making good progress lately. Once I finish the first draft, all I need is a beta who doesn't know all the plot twists, since it's kind of a mystery fic. :P

In the meantime, here's an angsty gen ficlet I wrote for sg_challenges this week, as a prequel to my SG-1 action figures ficlets here (http://www.geocities.com/christmaswerewolf/sg_challenges/43.html) and here (http://www.geocities.com/christmaswerewolf/sg_challenges/50.html)).

Post-Production

"He can't keep doing this," Jack said.

Sam pressed the phone tighter against her ear, averting her eyes from the infirmary bed across the room. "He won't be, sir. Doctor Lam says this is it."

There was a long pause from the other end of the line. If it had been anyone else, Sam would suspect he'd hung up on her. "What the hell happened?" Jack said at last, sounding strangled.

Sam forced herself to look. Daniel was pale, almost bleached against the contrast of Teal'c sitting vigil. The two remained motionless, frozen in time together, and Sam had never seen Teal'c look quite so small.

"He got caught in the blast," Sam said. Now that she was looking, she couldn't tear herself away from watching Daniel's chest rise and fall. "If he'd been standing at a different console... maybe... but it shattered all the bones in his leg. It took Doctor Lam sixteen hours to remove all the shrapnel. He'll never be allowed offworld again."

Another long pause. Sam listened to the sound of the general's breathing, the odd hitch in the middle of the inhale, the shakiness of the exhale. "I put in for my retirement this morning," he said at last. "I'll be at the mountain in four hours. Let him know I'm coming."

Sam closed her eyes. "Okay."

Over her shoulder, the news reporter continued her muted monologue, images of the alien attack and the Odyssey rolling across the screen.

Oh... ouch. (Both emotionally, and of course physically for Daniel.)

Nice work.

Ack! Poor Daniel! He's broken! He-he needs a sarcophagus or something to fix him!

Poor Daniel.

And Teal'c, and Sam and Jack so worried. :-(

Oh yeah, and apparently there'a an apocalypse somewhere. Poor Earth too. ;-)

Not an apocalypse, just an alien attack that can't be covered up, leading to the exposure of the Stargate program. ;) Don't worry, everything turns out relatively happy, in that SG-1 retire and grow old together. Well, and have to avoid the press, because now they're all "OMG! Heroes!" And then they buy their own action figures.
