Such a huge relief! Both stories (yes, they add up to another Ficzilla) are back from the marvelous Random's second beta and given their final buff and polish.

And posted! In secret, but posted!

I just stare at that little eye icon that means "private" and itch to make it go away... :)

For some odd reason, the story that's about 11,500 words had to be split into three posts, while the 12,000 words fic made it in two. I have no idea why it should work out that way. Formatting? Dialogue? Humor takes up more space than drama? :)

This is actually a first for me, and it's interesting that both ficathons chose this route: everyone posts their stories to the comm, or link to private-locked posts on the comm, but the posts and links don't go live until everyone has their story up. It's a great idea, frankly, because it means that no one is going to have wait two or three weeks (or months!) to finally get their story.

On the other hand, the locked posts aren't going to show up on anyone's flist when they're unlocked; they'll be two or three (or more days) behind. So what do most people intend to do? Should I modify the date, so they'll show up on the flists? (I'm not even entirely sure that modified date posts do show up on the flists.) Just make a quick FYI post when they go live with the links? What does everyone else intend to do?

And I wanted to say thank you to everyone who's given me such an entertaining discussion on the Enigma post. I love when topics drift like crazy. :)

I'd just make a separate post on the day they go public with the link to the story post. What comm is it in or will it show up in your LJ?
Wednesday, November 14th, 2007 08:21 pm (UTC)
The fics are right here on my LJ, but as I say, they're backdated; the one for [livejournal.com profile] sg1teamficathon went up yesterday, and the one for [livejournal.com profile] sg_ep_ficathon went up today. The official due date for the stories, though, is midnight Thursday and Friday, respectively, and once everyone's stories are linked or posted on the comms, the mods will release everything from the queue at once. As soon as that happens, I'll unlock my LJ posts so that the stories can be read.

So I think a FYI post is the way to go, here. :)

Yay for ficathons!

I have a sneaking suspicion that the ep ficathon is going to be more SGA than SG-1, but, well - we'll see.

And I am gloating over all the delightful teamy goodness that we're going to get! Including a brand new fic from Tallulah Rasa!
Thursday, November 15th, 2007 02:54 pm (UTC)
Bummer that it'll likely be more SGA (at least for those of us who are still pretty much just SG1).

Looking forward to them.
Wednesday, November 14th, 2007 05:39 pm (UTC)
heee :) go you!
*stares at looming revision job on own teamfic*
*runs and hides under bed*

I'm going to post it locked to my own LJ and then post a link when they go live (frankly, I'll be shocked if it isn't a few days late.)
I'm pretty sure changing the date won't make it appear on flists.

Yay your stories!
Wednesday, November 14th, 2007 08:23 pm (UTC)
That's the general consensus, and that's what I'll do, I think. And yeah, I think it'll probably be a little late, too - but it's worth it if it means no one gets left out.

And I'm looking forward to your reading my ep ficathon story, because even with all the Daniel whumping, it ended up being very much about Sam. And it's an era that interests you, too. So yay for ficathons! :)

TEASE!

(and, you know, I'm thinking of about 4 or 5 possible eras here :) )
Wednesday, November 14th, 2007 09:06 pm (UTC)
LOL!

So what's an "era" to you? I tend to think of it as follows:

Seasons 1-2: floppy-haired Daniel, brown-haired Jack, Captain Carter.
Seasons 3-5: short-haired Daniel, graying Jack, Major Carter.
Season 6: Jonas.
Season 7: post-Ascended Daniel, Major Carter, gray-haired Jack.
Season 8: Colonel Carter, General Jack.
Season 9-10: non-classic SG-1 ;)

:P

Um. Wow you have them all worked out.
Um. It depends?
I think eras can be big (S1-2 - working things out, figuring each other out) or really small (Full Circle - Fallen - Homecoming because so much is happening there) and, um, yeah. I don't really have definitions. But I like parts of all of them.

Because it's all about the hair.

You forgot Season 8. Teal'c begins with hair.

Or Early S4, the caterpillar era.
Thursday, November 15th, 2007 08:55 am (UTC)
Poor Teal'c with his caterpillar!

And yes, it's all about the hair. Although I personally prefer Teal'c without it.

(Should I include "copying girlfriend hairstyle Jonas" as part of the S7 era?)

I would just post an FYI with links to the unlocked posts. Modification to the date makes things not show up on friendslists for some reason. I have never figured out why this should be the case.
Wednesday, November 14th, 2007 08:25 pm (UTC)
Now, see, I actually knew that. And I'd forgotten. :) It's actually quite useful, if you're posting a whole series of related entries at once - post the first one regularly, then backdate the rest. Link to the others in the first post, and your flist can get to everything you've posted without have their own flist completely flooded. Works out quite nicely for multiple fic posts, too!
Wednesday, November 14th, 2007 06:25 pm (UTC)
Yay! More fics coming! Yes, please make a new post with links to your stories.

Humor definitely takes more space. You have to give people time to laugh! :)

Hee! Yes, it all makes sense now! :)

I'll definitely be posting a heads-up entry when the fics go live.
Wednesday, November 14th, 2007 07:04 pm (UTC)
So did you post just to your lj with a link to the comm? Or did you post in the comm for either/both?

I'm still undecided what to do for mine. I'm leaning towards linking especially since mine will be a multiparter. But I could post in my lj or there.

Yeah, when they're all public, maybe make another linky post or something.

YAY!!!! Teamy goodness!!!!
Wednesday, November 14th, 2007 08:28 pm (UTC)
I posted it all here in my own LJ, with the link and the "fake LJ cut" in the comms. I like having all my fics in one place, and neither community objects, so why not?

And, yes, since they're multi-parters, I'm also happier having them right here. Because even though they're already "up," I know I'm going to be poking at them over and over again, a few minutes at a time, over the next day or so. And I couldn't do that with a moderated post... :)

Teamy goodness for teh win! ::gloats::
Wednesday, November 14th, 2007 09:20 pm (UTC)
Oh! Excellent point. I didn't think about you can't edit the moderated posts. I was thinking what if someone else puts up their fic in the middle of me putting up the parts and...hee!

My fic has squeezed into three parts. And I'm getting so tired of looking at the thing, I might resist the temptation to tinker (heh, yeah, right).
Wednesday, November 14th, 2007 07:19 pm (UTC)
Modified dates won't show up on Friends lists, otherwise "Friends Only" title posts would always top your Friends List (like the one I have, it's set for 2016). The only way to bump it back up is to repost.
Wednesday, November 14th, 2007 08:29 pm (UTC)
Oh, good point! I hadn't thought of it that way. Right: my LJ index would show up all the time on flists if that really counted. So, yes. It looks like a "Fics are live now, go here!" post is the way to go.
Wednesday, November 14th, 2007 09:26 pm (UTC)
See, I always wondered when the post date on my lj index post comes around, if it would actually show up on people's flists. I guess now I know the answer. :-)

It's done by number of characters rather than words. So, yep, an 11,500 word text can take up more room than a 12,000 word one if it averages longer words, more punctuation, more italic tags, more line breaks, etc.

Thursday, November 15th, 2007 08:56 am (UTC)
I think it's the more line breaks that's tripping it into three sections, because the humor one has a lot more dialogue than the drama one.

But as long as it's readable! I think that's what really matters. :)
