Sam and Jack friendship fic recs

So, the last time anyone recced anything in the Jack and Sam friendship category over in [livejournal.com profile] stargateficrec was October 2005 (!) - a shocking state of affairs that could not be allowed to continue! Jack and Daniel friendship has over 80 recs in memories (and I'll be reccing that this month, too!), and Sam and Daniel friendship has over 30 (it's a newer category - give it time!). Even Sam and Teal'c friendship has nine recs to the Jack and Sam friendship category's five. Admittedly, that was all my doing, heh. And I'm still working on collecting enough stories to do a month of Jack and Teal'c friendship fic, too. So I am very pleased to announce that I have triumphantly collected enough Sam and Jack friendship fics to snag the category for February!

I have enough for the minimum four recs, but it's always fun to show a little enthusiasm. :) So how about it, flist? Do you know of any Sam and Jack friendship fics out there, whether your own stories or someone else's? Leave me links in the comments! I can't promise to rec them, and they may even already be on my list, but I will commit to at least read them.

Sam and Daniel vid rec

[livejournal.com profile] beakymoose has created something I was beginning to think could never exist: a Sam and Daniel friendship vid!  Sam/Daniel vids are rare enough, but despite actively searching, I have never before found a music vid that could classify as friendship rather than romance.

But now there is the delightful Brave, which is just fantastic and squeeful and such a wonderful tribute to their Wonder Twins enthusiasm and care and friendship.

::happy sigh::

There are at least two clips from S9 - Off the Grid and the adorable double-shrug from Arthur's Mantle - and at least two clips from S10 - one is recognizable by Daniel's square frames, and the other is from Morpheus. But there's no spoiling of storylines for anyone who hasn't seen those seasons.

[livejournal.com profile] beakymoose has several more music vids, including others that are tagged as Sam/Daniel, but I haven't had the opportunity to look through them and see if they're equally friendshippy or not. In the meantime, though, go check out Brave - you'll be glad that you did!

SG-1 friendship ficathon - any takers?

I know a lot of people on my flist are rather emphatic in their declarations of no more ficathons! But it wouldn't hurt to ask, now would it?

I would love to see a friendship ficathon for SG-1. There was such a great turnout for the [livejournal.com profile] sd_ficathon, which allowed both for Sam/Daniel ship and Sam and Daniel friendship. So how about a gen ficathon for all SG-1 friendships? It could either be a traditional ficathon, with assigned prompts, or a pool of prompts that can be claimed. Prompts would include two characters and a timeframe, a quote, an episode, even an icon or picture.

For example, and practically at random:

Janet and Hammond in Upgrades, sending Teal'c after the rest of SG-1 and waiting for them all to return.
Teal'c and Nyan: two aliens and Tau'ri culture.
Jack and Sam. "With respect, sir."
Daniel and Bill Lee and actual "little legs."

I am very vaguely thinking of sign-ups in March and stories due in May, with fics submitted and held in queue at a moderated comm until everyone's finished. But I'm certainly open to revising that schedule if fandom interferes. (I know there's a con or two coming up sometime.)

So, with no obligation or commitment:

You probably already know this one, but aurora_novarum wrote a great little Sam and Jack friendship story recently, "Holding the Bags".

Yep, on my list. But I'll gladly take any other recs you might have!

After my appalling lateness in the one and only ficathon I've entered, I'm not goin' there again. Especially not since it will drag my attention away from all the *other* unfinished fics I've got hanging around. That I'm not working on because I'm writing this f*cking piece of software for my work who almost certainly won't appreciate it.

That having been said, I reserve the write to read all prompts, write anything that inspires me, and in the unlikely event I actually write something before the ficathon is over might actually enter it if I had a suitable fic already complete. (Ha. Like that's going to happen.)

*slinks back to work writing software*

If we go with a prompt pool rather than assignments, that would work nicely, wouldn't it?

And you never know what plot bunny might jump and bite you!

I'm good at nagging you into plot bunnies. Heh heh heh.

I'm having issues with fic as it is but they may be resolved by March (and my computer is replaced).

If it is i'm in.

Excellent!
Monday, February 4th, 2008 01:33 am (UTC)
I'm torn between being really excited about the idea, and being really ficathon over-stimulated. But this is so cool that if I actually manage to finish my apocafic, I won't be able to resist.

That said, I think I'm a lot more likely to play if it's set up like the apocalypse_kree ficathon (with a large prompt list to choose from rather than exchanged assignments).

I'll see if I can come up with Sam and Jack friendship fics to let you know about. They've gotta be there.
Monday, February 4th, 2008 07:00 am (UTC)
You'd think the S&J friendship fics were out there, but go try to find them! Whew!

If there's sufficient interest, I'll put up a second poll to decide whether to make a traditional ficathon or a pool of prompts.

And I do hope we get lots of takers, because I think it would be just fantastic! :)

Ooooh Gen fic! My favourite kind of fic to write!

However I currently have an appalling record with finishing fic for the "take a prompt from the pile" kind of ficathons and have vowed to fulfil my obligations there before I jump in to anything else.

*wracks brain for S/J friendship* You're right in that it's kind of a rare beast in fandom. I wrote a friendshippy fic for the [livejournal.com profile] sjficathon, but it still has small elements of ship in it here and there, with Jack musing slightly on what might have been for 3 or so sentences :P

If I find anthing in my bookmarks I'll come back
Monday, February 4th, 2008 07:04 am (UTC)
I'm not sure if there will be a prompt pool or a regular exchange in the end. If enough people express interest, we'll have another poll to see what to do next.

Do let me know if you find anything in your bookmarks!

There's yours (well, you can't rec yours, I s'pose) and mine and [livejournal.com profile] pepper_field's). I think I gave you [livejournal.com profile] splash_the_cat's deli.ci.ous list (Did I put the periods in the right places?)

Oh, and there was one more...runs through my much less organized than fig's rec tags. This one is short and really good. :-) (found via the debrief! Brand New Episode (http://community.livejournal.com/dreamerland/6647.html) by [livejournal.com profile] stargatefangurl.

I've been thinking of making a poll for interest in just a Sam & Jack FRIENDSHIP ficathon (it would more likely be done as a challenge), but I'm just feeling so overwhelmed myself, I can't bear to think of bothering other people. (I wrote "maybe" for your poll..but it doesn't look like my votes took huh.)

I won't pursue it while you're hyping yours. (heh, procrastination is a wonderful thing).

Ah, no, can't rec mine! :)

You may have given me Splash's list, but I don't seem to have it. Could you send me the link again?

I'll check out Brand New Episode, thank you!

The advantage of doing a general SG-1 friendship ficathon is that there's something for everybody, including Sam and Jack fans, and Teal'c and Daniel, and Sam and Teal'c, and Teal'c and Jack, and Jack and Daniel, and Sam and Daniel, and Janet and Hammond, and Jacob and Bra'tac, and and and and and! :)

If we have a pool of prompts, that makes the choice easy. And if we do go with the more traditional prompt exchange, I plan to ask everyone to submit three DIFFERENT friendship pairs, so that the author has a choice and isn't stuck with, say, three Jack and Daniels when they'd be happier with Jack and Thor or Jonas and Teal'c or Vala and Mitchell.

(yes, I will magnaminiously allow S9-10 fics! Am I generous or what?! ;) )

Couple of them are borderline ship, but showcases the friendship over the underlying UST.

Excellent! I'll have a good browse. :)

Hee! Thanks splash!

Here's the link splash gave me.

http://del.icio.us/splashikins/fic-sg1-sam/jack-friendship

And oh yes, I agree a general friendship ficathon is very different than a Sam & Jack friendship ficathon (I'm just suspicious not many will choose to do Sam and Jack and instead go for other friendship pairings, and as you point out there is a large dearth of S & J friendship fics for whatever reason. I've bemoaned it for quite a while. Not that more friendship fic of any and/or all varieties is not completely welcome. *mmm buddy goodness*

But that brings up a question, is it just pairing friendship? How are you on gen threesomes or more (that may or may not be the four on the "team".)

Sigh, I just got hit with a brand new plotbunny this morning for an unsusual SG-1 buddy fic. I have no time to write the WIPs I have now, dang it! Grrr.
Monday, February 4th, 2008 09:07 pm (UTC)
I don't see why not. If it's a pool of prompts, that's easy to pick and choose. And if it's a traditional assignment of prompts - like I said, there should be three different choices, so why shouldn't one of them be three or more?

I'm really starting to think this might actually happen! Wheee! :)
Monday, February 4th, 2008 06:20 pm (UTC)
Hee, I see you *did* like Brand New Episode. :-D
Monday, February 4th, 2008 06:48 pm (UTC)
Sure did! :) Thanks for the link.
Monday, February 4th, 2008 07:00 pm (UTC)
I'd sign up, definitely! Though May is going to be completely insane for me, so I may do a lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth the last few weeks before deadline. (I know, I could always just write the thing ahead of time, but where would be the fun in that?)
Monday, February 4th, 2008 08:41 pm (UTC)
Everything is very tentative at the moment. We'll settle on dates when we settle on the ficathon! :)

But yay! for friendship!
Saturday, February 9th, 2008 01:14 am (UTC)
I saw this on sg1debrief and thought I'd drop by and say I'd be interested in a friendship fic pool. I have been lamenting on the lack of much Daniel-Teal'c friendship fan fic, and maybe I'd be inspired to write one.

And I agree with the appalling lack of Sam and Jack friendship stories out there. I'm still very green to the show and fan fic for it, but the only time I really see good friendship bits between them is in stories that have a ship for a main pairing, like a Sam/Daniel fic or a Sam/Jack fic. And even then, it's kind of rare.
Sunday, February 10th, 2008 07:23 am (UTC)
Oh, YES. The dearth of Daniel and Teal'c friendship fic drives me insane. So much angst and drama to be mined there, and almost nothing!

The few fics I have found, if you're interested, can be found over here.

And yes, Sam and Jack friendship fics are an ever rarer breed! This is most likely because authors will slap the "Sam/Jack" label on their stories - partly because they might be anxious about being accused of leaving the label off when it belongs, and partly to attract Sam/Jack shippers to the story. Of course, that leaves gen fans like me out in the cold, as I wouldn't read a Sam/Jack story in the first place. I do hope the few fics I'm finding to rec in [livejournal.com profile] stargateficrec will be to your liking!

You're interested in the Friendship ficathon? Fantastic! If you wander over here, you can vote for which type of ficathon you'd like and your preferred dates.
Monday, February 11th, 2008 08:51 pm (UTC)
Thanks for the link! I have your recs lists bookmarked from a little bit before, but haven't even made a dent in it yet.

I will have to check out stargateficrec a bit more. I have it friended and haven't really used it much yet.

I have quite a few plot bunnies for a few stories, and one fic someone looked at a bit and is probably the most progressed. But I think a deadline for something would be a good nudge to get me going. There's so much really good stuff out there that I'm almost afraid to post anything of my own.
Monday, February 11th, 2008 09:42 pm (UTC)
Heh heh. I can't help all these recs if everyone else writes such great fics! :)

[livejournal.com profile] stargateficrec's memories are useful in directing you to specific categories, but the tags will also show you fics that might have been recced in other categories that suit your tastes. But since the recs depend on what the reccer chose to list as categories, it can still be a little iffy. You can definitely enjoy the recs arriving on your flist, though, without any problems!

A deadline worked for me, too, when I joined my first ficathon last year. And new authors are always welcomed! :)
