The Stargate Fan Awards really are open for nominations now. We have until December 31st. Once you've logged in (or created an account), the site is easily navigated. I'm having some personal trouble with some of the coloring for the text boxes, but I've dropped the SGA team a note and I hope to see that revised soon.

So far, I've nominated six vids. I can see this is going to be an ongoing process... so yeah, better to get started now. :) I've bookmarked the "Manage My Nominations" page, which should help.

And now for some meta, because believe it or not, I really do have another Canon vs. Fanon in the works!

While skimming some S6 transcripts (heh, how else can I do S6 research...?), I discovered a most interesting exchange in Memento:

Jonas: How many planets have SG-1 been to?

Teal'c: One hundred thirty three.

So, after nearly six years, they've been to 133 planets. That comes out, in average, to about 22 planets a year. Now, contrast that with Mitchell's pride in 200 about his 200th time through the Stargate... Hmm. Even with the obvious conclusion that Mitchell isn't counting missions but event horizons, aren't those numbers just a little out of proportion?

I think I'm going to sneak this little factoid into the next Canon vs. Fanon, which will be about offworld, because many fanfic writers have the team Gating out weekly at a minimum, if not even more frequently than that. A list of 133 planets (and I adore Teal'c for having that information effortlessly at his fingertips) contradicts that rather strongly. Unless, of course, you suggest that Teal'c was making up a number at random - but the timing seems wrong for that kind of thing, and as far as I can tell, Teal'c did not have that kind of "straight man" relationship with Jonas. If I'm wrong about that, I'd appreciate correction from those of you that have actually watched S6. :)

ETA: I have now edited the subject of this post and the tags to reflect that this has essentially turned into a canon vs. fanon debate. As always, my flist rocks. :)

Erm, someone recommended it? Didn't care much for the slo-mo because it's NOT JACK, but was quite charmed by the Foothold thingies and Teal'c's great knock-out and, of course, Daniel teaching Teal'c how to drive in '69. And the delightful AU potential for the guy opening the door and wearing Daniel's Foothold thingy fills me with glee, even if no one actually writes the story, ever.

Kinsey winning, though. Biggest downer, right there.

Back on topic... I agree that there have been huge tracts of time when SG-1 couldn't go through the Gate, or when individual missions took more time than usual, which means that "routine" (hah!) missions had to be more frequent. However...

under normal operations

Oh, yeah, RIGHT. As if SG-1 ever has THAT. :)

I have to say this is a first for me - exploring possible fanon like this in debate. Great fun. I should do it more often!

Oh. Doh. I get a bunch of season six episode titles confused and thought it was the one with the multi-dimensional caterpillars. Smoke and Mirrors I *did* enjoy (Barrett! Teal'c's knock-out! And, yes, I would have loved if they'd had Daniel be the foothold thingy. I think I said that when I first watched). I don't think we were ever supposed to think it was Jack - we all know it's not his style - the fun part was watching them unravel the mystery.

Hey, sometimes bad guys win.

Oh, yeah, RIGHT. As if SG-1 ever has THAT. :)

Exactly. Theoretically they have missions every week, just the reality doesn't work out well (plus add in emergency rescue missions - like in Heroes - I bet that happens not infrequently). I guess, for all the reasons presented here (and aefgyfu's bit about the program being really different those last two years) the numbers don't seem that off to me.

No, I most definitely have NOT seen the multi-dimensional caterpillar one. Interestingly enough, I managed to avoid the S10 beastie one too... :)

I'm going to have to see how this all adds up in the end. It's entirely possible I'll drop it as being more plausible than I thought. In the meantime, though, it's hugely entertaining to discuss.

There's nothing to say a canon v fanon post can't be mostly canon. :-)

LOL! Bit of a contradiction there. :) Still, once the research is complete, you never know!

No, no, she's right! If we prove that the fanon makes sense, it's still worth doing- provides an indication for writers whether they're making sense or not.

Like fanfic writers need my approval, heh.

Seriously, the whole point of this meta series is to point out fanon that either contradicts or is unsupported by canon. Proving that that writers are right about something they wouldn't have questioned in the first place...? I think I'm missing the point. :)

See my comment elsewhere in this thread about spreadsheets and what time of year it was in Colorado! Many writers do care about canon, and spend a fair amount of time researching...this is research we won't have to do :).

Heh, yes. Fair enough. Especially since several of you seemed determined to do all my research for me. :)

the multi dimensional caterpillar episode is NOT one of my favs, but RDA was fantastic in that one, and it showed off Jack's people skills and Jack out of the mountain to a T. No pun intended. It's worth watching for that and not the plot imho.

Now, see? This is why fandom is so marvelous. I've always said you can find something worthwhile in every episode (although certain S10 eps have strained that theory to the breaking point... but never mind). Thanks for adding to the squee! :)
