So, the Off-Screen Missions Alphabet Soup was technically supposed to be finished last week.

As of this writing, we have ten stories posted (you can find links to them all in the comments of this entry, including by one new cook (hi [personal profile] smilebackwards!). One author had to withdraw; two others will helpfully be posting theirs soon.

For those of you even slightly slower than Sam, the math is pretty obvious: that's 12 out of 26. :(

The minimum for these is 100 words. It shouldn't be that hard to find sufficient authors to write gen fic that offers options over the course of 10 seasons!

If you'd like to join this final SG-1 Alphabet Soup, please go to this entry and claim a mission. :)

I had a splendid vacation and am now back!

::looks round::

Hmmm. Still standing, I see.

Soooo, stories for Off-Screen Missions Alphabet Soup should be posted in less than a week, by August 8th. This is a tad problematic, considering that half the letters are still unclaimed.

::sighs::

I know I'll take a second one myself, but I was really hoping that this Soup's theme would be a fun and inspiring one.

Please, add signal boosts to your own journals, so the SG-1 Alphabet Soup series can go out with a bang, not a whimper:

Two weeks to go, people, and HALF the letters are still unclaimed.

...I think this is going to be our last SG-1 Alphabet Soup. The interest isn't there anymore. There are the wonderful people like Wonderland who have been writing in every single Soup since it began, and relative newcomers who have been enthusiastically writing one (or more) stories in the last few years, and there's almost always a new cook or two. But we can't seem to find enough authors for a full Soup, and it's getting a little too discouraging.

Still! I have hopes that this will be a good finale. So if you want to join this last Soup, please sign up here. And if your story is finished, then post the details here.

I'll be AFK until the 1st, so if you're signing up, please double-check to see if any comments posted since today, the 24th, have already claimed the episode you want. Letter assignments will be distributed when I get back, but you can start writing your fic; I'll be happy to help you find ways to make your letter fit. (Half the time, I write a fic and then figure out which letter needs claiming...)

Signal boost, people! The more the merrier, or at least the more the more complete. :)

Soup cooks, how are you all doing? Simmering nicely, slightly burnt, still trying to get the fire started?

Several delicious servings are already available, as you can see from scanning the comments of the official Off Screen Missions Alphabet Soup entry. However, as of this writing, only half the alphabet has been claimed.

I will already be extending the deadline by another week; it was originally August 1st, but RL circumstances mean that I will have no internet access at all in the week leading up to that. So now, Soup fics aren't due until August 8th.

The Alphabet Soup series has been a joy to arrange and a delight to read. I would hate to have to stop these ficathons, but there are limits. I assumed that the challenge of finishing the Quantum Mirror Alphabet Soup was an outlier, not a trend. If it's just as difficult to finish this one, then, well...

So. If you haven't yet claimed a letter, I hope you'll consider one of the many, many prompts available. Please signal boost on your own journal, too. Let's try to get the word out and keep these Soups cooking.

Here's where you sign up

Here's where you post about your finished fic

Happy Souping!

For Off-Screen Missions Alphabet Soup: the aborted mission at the beginning of Solitudes. Daniel's annoyed at wearing a helmet, but it turns out to be a very good thing. ~1,100 words. Rated G.

What are some of your favorite (gen) Daniel fics, either your own or others'?

Here are a few links to my own work:

Remember the canon vs. fanon series? Those were mostly Daniel-focused.

Oh, Danny-boy explains why Jack doesn't really use "Danny" as a nickname very much, and Daniel, Pacifism, and Weapons Skills explains why the Daniel-the-pacifist trope is definitely fanon.

And because I am definitely not a fan of Saint Daniel:

The Fanonization of Saint Daniel, part one and part two

And because I am definitely not a fan of easily cowed Daniel: Clumsy, sneezy geek, which, of course, directly inspired sixbeforelunch's fantastic The Wrath of Daniel. My fic-enabling skillz may have receded of late (we are going to get the latest Soup cooked, right?) but I have a grand record on which to rest my laurels. ;)

On that note, I will link to my own Team Effort, in which the team that trains together, breaks out of prison together.

Well, it took over five years - close to six, really - but the Off-Screen Missions Alphabet Soup is done. \0/ Below is the complete TOC with links to all twenty-six stories. Readers are strongly encouraged to leave feedback. Links to the rest of the Alphabet Soup fics can be found at the Alphabet Soup Index.

This will be Alphabet Soup #24. Because I apparently have the eternal optimism of the shameless SG-1 fangirl. :)

Not sure what I'm talking about? Visit the Alphabet Soup index for past anthologies.

Our theme this time is Off-Screen Missions. These are missions that are either referenced or clearly implied in SG-1 canon as taking place off-screen. It does not include missions that are created out of whole cloth, although I tend to be pretty generous in my interpretations. If you can find a hook via a throwaway line of dialogue, I will accept it.

This is how it works, and read through carefully, please, because this one is a little different has changed:

Under the cut, I've listed episodes and the implied/referenced missions that are suggested by the episode. If inspiration strikes, comment and ask me for a letter, which I will assign randomly. By making such a claim, you are commiting yourself to writing at least 100 words of gen fic. It could be in the form of a report, a single snippet of a scene from the mission, the briefing afterwards - or, of course, a multi-chapter epic of the mission that we all wish we could have seen on screen... :)

If you have an idea for a mission that's not on the list, go right ahead and do it!

Once an actual fic has been posted, I will strike out that particular prompt on the list. (This is because, sadly, many prompts were claimed and ultimately never filled.)

Signups will last until all 26 letters are claimed. Stories may be posted as soon as they're written, although they will be officially due by August 1st. [Edit: ::cough:: yes, that was more than eight months ago.] [Edit again: yeah, this is going to keep going until we're done...] [Edit in 2021: GOOD GRIEF PEOPLE LET'S FINISH THIS THING.] Stories can be posted anywhere the author pleases, although they must be open to the public without requiring a login or password. If one of your posting sites is AO3, please add your story to the Off-Screen Missions Alphabet Soup collection.

Authors who want to cook a second helping may come back and claim a second mission as soon as their first is posted.

There are only a few rules: your fic must be at least 100 words, although there is no maximum limit; it must have some connection to a mission referenced or implied in SG-1 canon, however you choose to interpret that; the fic should be canon compliant, although it does not have to reference canon specifically; and it should be gen. There are many, many ficathons out there to accomodate ship; please don't sneak in references to your favorite OTP. Canon ships may be referenced, but they should not be the focus of the story.

Please note that I will no longer be asking writers to send me a full copy of the text of their fic, as I am not going to collect all 26 stories into a single-entry anthology. The table of contents will be the one-stop shopping place for all stories in the anthology, with links going to the authors' journal. It is therefore even more important that each author sends me a detailed entry for the TOC. You can find complete instructions at this entry.

Here's to SG-1. And gen squee. And Alphabet Soup!

Remember this entry from last week? The idea is to come up with a list of off-screen missions that are suggested by canon - episodes that begin with the team returning from off-world, or episodes in which the team is following up after another SG team, etc.

There's been a great response. The total so far is as follows:

We have 9 episodes from S1, 12 from S2, 7 from S3, 11 from S4, 5 from S5, 6 from S6, 6 from S7, a measly 2 from S8, 4 from S9, and 3 from S10.

Now, many of these are actually bigger numbers, as several episodes offer multiple possibilities. But it's pretty clear that some seasons need a little more prompting!

So if you care to scroll through the list and see if any other ideas pop into your fron, please comment at either that entry or this entry so I can add your suggestions.

This brilliant idea is the brainchild of [personal profile] ivorygates, and I am shamelessly stealing it for the next Alphabet Soup.

(Which needs a name. "Canon-implied Alphabet Soup" lacks a certain oomph. Any suggestions?)

Edit: [personal profile] green_grrl suggests "Off-screen missions." I like that one!

The premise is simple: many episodes of SG-1 reference a past or future mission. The most famous of these, I think, is the mission referenced in Emancipation to P3X-595 where Sam "drank that stuff that made you take off..." and the final frame of The Enemy Within, which ends with the team striding through the Stargate for their first mission together.

Other examples:

Establishing the base on Hanka, before Nirrti unleashed the plague in Singularity.

Missions to help the Enkarans, since Scorched Earth begins with the people settled in their new home.

The first mission to Juna, before Cronus showed up in Double Jeopardy.

Missions to establish peaceful relations with the Unas after The First Ones but before Beast Burden.

Followup to Beneath the Surface, getting the brainwashed victims moved to a safer, warmer planet.

Teal'c's adventures off-world during Solitudes, trying to find Sam and Jack.

All these popped into my brain after two or three minutes of glancing over a list of episodes. There must be many, many more, and they don't necessarily have to be SG-1 (how many times did Reynolds take his team to Thilana's planet?). So I would like to invite you all to comment here with your suggestions. The format of my examples above would be just fine. Include the name of the episode or an obvious plot line - "what happened to Sam and Jack and Teal'c while they were stuck off-world until they got the Stargate back up" is a good reference to Small Victories, but "that ep where Jack fires his P-90" won't be much help. ;) I'll go through the comments and collate them over the next several days and we'll see what we can come up with!

MUCH YAY.

This way to the final TOC!

I am going to be insanely optimistic and assume this was an outlier, because good grief six months to finish an anthology is beyond ridiculous.

But I am insanely optimistic, so look out in about two weeks or so for new Soup info. Ivorygates had a great idea of a new Soup and I'm really looking forward to it. :)

I have never had so much trouble with a Soup before. :(

As I have mentioned more than once in the last few months, the Quantum Mirror Alphabet Soup is still short several letters. Some wonderful authors submitted multiple entries. I personally wrote a third entry just to keep things moving. Yet the letters A, G, and K are still not yet done.

I understand that it's a challenging theme, although it actually garnered one of the highest number of votes in an old poll about future themes. But we can't move forward to the next one until this Soup is complete.

There's a fantastic theme ready for the next Soup (courtesy of a chat with IG) and I am looking forward to that one... if we ever get this Soup done.

So how about it, people? Even drabbles qualify. We need 3 more fics to see Quantum Mirror Alphabet Soup complete. Any takers?

Edit: Two people have stepped up already! We are down to the letter G now...

Argh. And the letter L too. Two to go, folks.

For [personal profile] ivorygates, who gave me the prompt: Teal'c, "You can't go home again." Four times Teal'c walked away from home, and the many times that he didn't. Includes references to Teal'c's arc throughout the show, and specific references to COTG, Affinity, and Unending. Just over 2,000 words.

I played around with tenses and narrative voice, but it's all Teal'c's POV.

...that Jack gave one of these to Daniel, with lots of bad jokes about the pen being mightier than the sword.

...and that Teal'c took that expression literally.

If anyone puts something like this in a fic, please point me to it. :)

Summary: If quantum is the smallest possible bit of a thing that retains that thing’s essential qualities, how (or what) might define a quantum mirror? 780 words.

Author's Note: Written for the poor Quantum Mirror Alphabet Soup, which is still, even after this, four letters short of completion. Yes, that would be the Soup that should have ended three months ago.

I don't often write what I think some people would call "metafic," but this probably qualifies. Many thanks to Ivorygates for the beta, the suggestions, and the shamelessly stolen summary!

Also, please bear in mind that this is probably Stargate-level science competence, if that much. :)

Hurray for archiving old fic on AO3! :D

[personal profile] sixbeforelunch has reposted this delicious Daniel ficlet. Here's my original rec:

You know all those cliched fanfics in which poor, woobie Daniel is bullied by nasty, mean Marines?

...You know, that Daniel? The one who stands up to the Goa'uld (even when he's on his knees) and, to quote this priceless fic, has had his "penchant for biting sarcasm" once "registered as a lethal weapon on an alien planet"?

Trust me. This story is not that kind. :)

With a hilarious series of phone calls from Jack and a zinger of a tag line from Reynolds, this fantastic ficlet will have you laughing out loud, even as you're nodding in agreement. Because really, no one could ever bully Daniel Jackson and live to tell the tale!

[Full and smug disclaimer: I got to inspire this fic! Lucky me!]

Daniel blinked, twice. Opened his mouth. Closed it. A marine wandered into the locker room, took one look at Daniel's face, and headed right back out.

The Wrath of Daniel will make you cheer. Go read!

New calendar year upon us...

2017 was a very busy RL year for me - mostly for family reasons and mostly for good ones at that, but crazy busy. So here are my fannish accomplishments of the last 12 months:
