redial_the_gate does Disclosure today. I go into this one knowing that it's the source of the screencap that Daniel was born in Olympia (whether that's Olympia, Greece or a fictional Olympia, Oregon is unclear), that it's a clip show, and that Thor pwns Kinsey. No real ep discussion here, just liveblogging my reactions. Onward!

[info]redial_the_gate recaps Paradise Lost today (redial international chat was on Friday). This is the last of the non-Daniel S6 eps I've seen before, so we'll back to dials vs. redials after this. I watched this one a few years ago out of a sense of fairness to Harry Maybourne. I can't stand the guy, but there was the minuscule possibility that something in this ep would redeem him just a tad.

Guess what? It didn't. If anything, it's even worse.

I did sit down to rewatch, to keep the flow of the S6 storyline going, but I didn't liveblog it. So just a few random mutters beneath the cut.

Paradise Lost )

Bottom line: With all due respect to Tom Macbeath, who breathes such vibrancy into a character that I can feel so strongly about it... Maybourne is, to quote Lois Lane in Lois and Clark, "Pocket lint! Pocket lint in the pockets of lawyers!" :)

[info]redial_the_gate recaps Sight Unseen later today. Here's one that I really don't remember at all from reading the transcript all those years ago. It's one of those eps that have absolutely no repercussions for later storylines. Possibly that is a good thing, considering some of the storylines that have been expanded upon! :) Actually, you'd expect other-dimensional bugsies to be something referenced in Citizen Joe - and perhaps it was, and I simply don't remember?

Anyway. I go into Sight Unseen knowing that Jonas touches something which spreads like a virus even outside the SGC with people suddenly seeing ghosties and beasties. As always, liveblogging my reactions without any real review of the ep. Onwards!

Sight Unseen )

Ah, well. Aside from my enjoyment of Jonas and Sam's friendship, this was a pretty mediocre ep for me. If you disagree (or even agree, heh), I'd love to hear from you!

Despite this being new Stargate for me, I know a little more about this one than most other S6 eps for which I only skimmed a transcript over four years ago. That, of course, is because this ep plays a major role in S8 by being the beginning of Replicarter. As [personal profile] abyssinia says, Replicarter is arguably one of the best villains to ever grace Stargate. She induces the same horrified fascination as Absolute Power!Daniel - one of the good guys, but with all the brakes off. AP!Daniel, however, lasted a single ep and never existed outside Daniel's (and Shifu's?) mind(s). Replicarter, in contrast, nearly took over an entire galaxy. And, like AP!Daniel, it makes all us wonder, just a little, how very very dangerous Sam would be if her moral compass went AWOL. That has to be fun. :) Aby, BTW, will be recapping this ep for [info]redial_the_gate later today, and I fully expect it to be utterly squeeful!

Despite all that, I have to confess that I'm not a real fan of human-form Replicators (I'll call 'em HFRs from now on). Replicarter, hoo boy yes. But the idea of HFRs are, to me, a major letdown from the visceral creepiness of metal lego bugs. It's also a bit, hm, anthropomorphic-centric? The spider forms were much more efficent. Why not pattern themselves after the Asgard, fr'instance, who they've been fighting all these centuries?

Ah, well. Here we go. As always, liveblogging of reaction without really discussing the ep. Onwards!

Unnatural Selection )

...Whew. This ep packs quite a punch. Still think HFRs are a mistake, but the promise of Replicarter makes up for it, I guess. :)

I am going to admit up-front that I'm going into this one with a slight anti-ep bias. As I have often implied (or stated outright), I am very much not a fan of Earth gaining large hyperspace-capable ships. There are two reasons for this: first, it largely detracts from the big stone doughnut hiding in NORAD's basement, to the point where there are large segments of S8 where the Stargate is barely even mentioned, much less featured. Second, one of the things I like most about SG-1 is that alien tech notwithstanding, the show has always very much been grounded in here and now. Yes, we get to play with naquadah reactors and back-engineered X-301s and 2s, but it's always been reasonably extrapolated (for the sci-fi definition of "reasonable," anyway) and relatively rare. But with the onset of Prometheus, it's the beginning of what I personally see as a downward spiral to a season ending that took place entirely on a ship instead of, y'know, something to do with the series' actual NAME.

So while I'll happily debate/discuss the matter with those of you who do love ships (rather than shipping, heh) in the comments, I'm warning you all to take any less-than-enthusiastic responses with a grain of naquadah.

So. Prometheus. I go into this one knowing that Earth gets its first ship (articifical gravity yet?), we meet the reporter that drives [personal profile] aurora_novarum crazy (although I didn't mind her much myself in subsequent eps), and there's another hostage situation and annoying NID interference of some sort. As always, live-blogging of reaction without real episode discussion. Onwards!

Prometheus )

Short-cut to ship tech is explained, but I still vastly prefer storylines that include the big stone doughnut in the basement. Sigh. I give this ep high marks for lots of Paul Davis and Sam being marvelous and most of the Jonas scenes being good ones, but there was way too little Teal'c and Jack (although what there was, was fantastic!) and yeah - too much shippiness. If you want to call it that. ;)

Back to "new" episodes for me! I go into Cure knowing nothing more than the bare existence of three things: Pangara, tretonin, and Egeria. No real coherence, just liveblogging my reactions. Onward!

Cure )

A sobering, thoughtful ep. Not sure why tretonin is still such a problem in Changeling and later eps when Egeria gave them the solution, though. What am I missing? And yes, I really do wish we could've had at least once a few words from the host in that conversation between Malek and Egeria, but ah well.

Last week, all my fannish time was occupied with Alphabet Soup and Gen Fic Day, so I didn't have a chance to rewatch Allegiance. And it is a rewatch, too; a year or so ago, when [personal profile] aurora_novarum was trying to coax me into watching S6, she recced it for its general lack of Jonasness (don't forget, I wasn't anti-Jonas but I wasn't a fan either) and the high quality of awesomeness with both Jacob and Bra'tac. And she was right! :) In fact, I was betting for Allegiance to be voted for a redial international chat. I want to watch it again now as part of the series flow and see how my much more rosy glasses allow me to see the ep now.

Still liveblogging my reactions, but with the understanding that is a redial, not a dial. Onwards!

Allegiance )

As I said above in the liveblogging, Jacob and Bra'tac onscreen together threatens to overload my computer with awesomeness. So here's an icon, free for the sharing, inspired by the ep:

Now I can finally go and read [profile] lizardbeth_j's recap properly and join the discussion. Good thing Redial weeks go from Tuesday to Tuesday, hmm? :)

Coming up soon, I hope: Cure. Back to new eps, wheee!

[info]redial_the_gate recaps The Other Guys today, and I've been mightily resisting the temptation to read [personal profile] beanpot's recap that is sitting innocently in the queue right now. :)

It's going to be a little... difficult for me to liveblog this one. I've read the transcript more than once and I disliked it strongly. Yes, I learned my lesson with Prodigy - transcripts don't always do justice to the scene onscreen. But I am particularly wary of that closing fantasy scene, and I'm aware of the large contingent of fans out there who complain that it's not just Felger; much of the characterization is insanely over the top. OTOH, there is Jack the Grammar Police, and that never gets old! Also, there is just as large a contingent of fandom that adores the ep, so... Okay. I'll try for the open mind. That's the best I can do.

So. No real review, just liveblogging my reactions. Onward!

The Other Guys )

some thoughts )

I enjoyed a lot of the team moments, and if I take it with a hefty grain of salt (Felger writes his fanfic version of what really happened) I can even accept it as canon. But someone is going to have to convince me why this deserves to be a fan favorite, because right now, I don't see it.

"Anyway, I'm sorry, but that just happens to be how I feel about it. What do you think?"

[info]redial_the_gate does Shadow Play today. Back to new eps for me! Let's see what I remember the transcripts about this ep... Um. They go back to Kelowna? That's about it. No real episode discussion below, just liveblogging my reactions. Onwards!

Shadow Play )

Final question: Did the team have the right to swipe the naquadria they found? And how incompetent are the Kelownans that they didn't even notice that Sam and Teal'c were carrying a crateful of naquadria back through the Stargate?

To keep discussion in one place, please comment over at LJ. Thanks!

[info]redial_the_gate does Nightwalkers! I have been promised Sam in leather and Jonas and Teal'c in trenchcoats. Also, I'm pretty sure Sam slaps Jonas and that this ep includes that shot I've seen in music vids of a bunch of soldiers running down a street, waving rifles with lights and looking ridiculously conspicuous. No real commentary here, just liveblogging my reaction. Onwards!

Liveblogging Nightwalkers )

And some some actual real commentary on the episode:

Fun bits aside, what does it say about the NID -- and its superiors, presumably the Joint Chiefs of Staff -- that they're willing to allow innocent civilians to suffer under Goa'uld occupation for the sake of a bit of tech? That sneer about succeeding where the SGC failed. How much of this is Maybourne-like comeuppance vs. Makepeace-like do anything to win the battle against the Go'auld?

I would welcome your thoughts on this. :)

[profile] redial_the_gate is one of my favorite comms over at LJ. It's been so much fun, these past few years, to Redial the Gate by watching SG-1, one episode at a time, every single week. It's fandom at its absolute best: all-inclusive, friendly, and just plain squeeful!

I'm particularly excited about this upcoming season, because I still haven't watched most of Season Six. New episodes of SG-1 to watch! ::gloats:: I look forward to getting to know Jonas properly as something more than not!Daniel.

In the meantime, if you want to sign up for recapping and meta, head over to Redial right now. Past experiences suggest it won't take very long before they're all gone! :)

[profile] kalquessa recaps The Sentinel in [livejournal.com profile] redial_the_gate later today, and I am looking forward to a typically entertaining entry from our favorite cheese elf (complete with Little Bear contributing typos as she's forced to type one-handed). In the meantime, though, some thoughts of my own on Daniel's final normal mission, and why some parts of it feel like it's not quite in place.

...okay, they don't really. But that's what sprang instantly to mind. :)

[profile] redial_the_gate does eight or nine redial international chats every season. They take place on Friday nights (which is why I don't participate, although to be honest, I probably couldn't manage it at other times, either). Essentially, everyone logs onto a chatroom and then presses "play" for the featured episode simultaneously. The chat is filled with much snark and glee, and the logs are subsequently posted to the comm for everyone to enjoy.

The next one is this week, actually - Fail Safe on September 4th!

Then I read an article in The Washington Post, which includes the following paragraphs:

The television network will be airing old episodes for two of its shows, Fringe and Glee, with Twitter commentary along the bottom of the screen. But no, sadly, not just anyone can tweet anything and have it be on national television, these will be moderated streams. And most of the it will be taken up by the tweets of the two shows' casts and producers, apparently.

During the episodes, the cast members and producers will be watching and tweeting live. Fans be able to see their tweets on the bottom portion of their television screens or can follow along on Twitter itself by checking out the FRINGEonFOX and GLEEonFOX Twitter accounts. Select tweets from fans following along will be put on air.

Now, I don't follow Twitter, but the potential here is deliciously huge. That's like watching your favorite Stargate ep on DVD and, instead of hearing live commentary on the second audio stream, actually seeing the tweets from PDL or whoever appearing on the bottom of the screen as they watch along with you at the same time!

And then it hit me - that's redial international chat. Wheeeee! :)

Because we are just that awesome, and Fox network totally stole it from us. ::nods firmly::

(Yes, I know we didn't make up the idea out of whole cloth. I know about MST3K and I've seen it in other fandoms, too. I didn't tag this "stargate sg-1 silliness" for nothing.)

There is no real point to this post, except perhaps to prove that I am too easily amused. :) But how about commenting here with the kind of tweets that you think the team (or Janet, or Siler, or whoever) would Twitter if they were watching an ep of SG-1?

DanielJackson @Stargate #BeastofBurden my hair looked like that? why didn't someone tell me to comb my hair?
JackO'Neill @Stargate #BeastofBurden you were armed with a zat, i couldn't risk it

Hope I got the format of that right - as I said, I don't do Twitter. But you get the idea. :)

If you've been reading my LJ for a while, you may have noticed me promise, a time or two or five, that I would write a long, ranty meta about how the writers take every victory the SGC ever achieves and render them utterly pointless.

Well, it's finally up over at [info]redial_the_gate! Emphasis is on the Tollan, since it's officially meta for Between Two Fires, but there's also mention of the Tok'ra, the Ancients, various story arcs, and (of course) Abydos.

If you're interested, the meta is posted here: Deconstructing success: the Tollan and beyond.

All the episodes for Season Five have been claimed for recaps, but there's always room for extra meta! If you want to talk about your favorite ship (or favorite team, heh) or discuss who got the better deal when Rodney McKay got traded for a blown-up DHD or anything else connected to Season Five, go to this post and leave a comment.

Also, the icontest for Season Five is still taking submissions, through May 10. We've got some lovely ones already, but there's always room for more! You can submit your icons right here.

ETA: And spreading the word on more SG-1 fandom squee! [personal profile] splash_the_cat  (who created Debrief over on LJ) is setting up a noticeboard comm here on Dreamwidth, where people can post links to SG-1 related fanworks with an extensive tagging system. She's polling for names right now over on her journal.

Remember that poll I had up last week about watching Prodigy?

The last choice on the poll was this: I don't care if you watch it or not, but SG-1 is LOVE!

I was SO RIGHT.

Just... 42 minutes of NEW show. That is pure GLEE, people.

'I am going to shoot you.' )

Bottom line: No, this is never going to be a favorite of mine. Yes, I still see Mary Sue aspects to Hailey, but it's not half as bad as the transcript led me to expect. Yes, I did find her (mostly) likable, and I look forward to seeing her again in Proving Ground to see if my opinion of her will change in that ep too. Yes, Teal'c is awesome. :D Yes, Jack is too. Yes, so is Sam. Yes, Bill Lee is great. Yes, Daniel could have fit into this, and I'm sorry he wasn't there.

YES, it was fantastic to watch a brand new ep of SG-1, and I'm suddenly looking forward to S6!

...And yes, I want someone to write the fic where the lightning bugs turn out to be the Furlings! :)

Tomorrow, [livejournal.com profile] redial_the_gate will recap The Light, with fun and games for all your angsty needs! Next week, though, is Prodigy. And I must lower my eyes in shame and confess that I have never actually... y'know... watched the episode.

Never watched Prodigy. Never watched most of S6. Never watched the two Daniel-less eps in S10. (Anyone sending a trend, here?) And never watched Avenger 2.0, either.

But, well... I'm a mod. Am I obligated to watch Prodigy for next week's Redial?

Do I owe it to myself to finally see the entire series, from beginning to end?

Or should I give in to temptation to just run away, screaming? :)

So I turn to you, my dear flist, to help me make up my mind with a poll. What do you think?

Prodigy or purgatory? You decide! )

So the Stargate Fan Awards have moved into the next phase: informing nominees so they can place their stories in the appropriate categories. They've given a two week period for this. Hopefully, the Awards will go live on April 1st with all the nominations and move into the voting phase soon after that.

And, well... ::scuffs toe:: I wish to thank the lovely people who have chosen to express their enjoyment of my fics by nominating five stories: SG-1, Ninja Style, In Search of Possibilities, All This Time, Team's Day Out, and Famed in Song and Story.

And in even more exciting news, [livejournal.com profile] redial_the_gate has also been nominated! I've said over and over again that Redial represents fandom at its shining best. Keep redialing the Gate, guys! (And hey, the recap of 2010 goes up today!)

and I'm looking for some advice... )

[livejournal.com profile] redial_the_gate goes live with the recap for Beneath the Surface today.
