Here's the monthly update of the Fig Newton corner of SG-1 fandom:

fandom )

fic )

On to the recs! This month marked my 700th rec, which kinda boggles the mind. At least mine. Not only that, but the Master List of SG-1 fic recs is actually up-to-date! I'm on a roll, apparently.

They were all posted at [info]stargateficrec, but they are archived at [personal profile] figs_sg1_rec with my own tags. Follow the links below. You should all know the drill by now...

Replicarter recs )

::insert regular encouragement to sign up to rec here::

In other gen reccing news, [community profile] sg1genrecs's current theme is lost episode -- stories that feature original plotlines, rather than being episode related. If you have a favorite gen fic that fits the bill, I hope you'll wander over there and rec it.

Three happy SG-1 things in the last few days:

1. The [community profile] sg1friendathon already has two people who have completed their fics and submitted them! The response overall has been enthusiastic, and even with the expectation that a few people will probably drop out before the deadline, I am delighted to see that gen fic is still alive and well.

(And hey, you can still sign up if you want -- just keep in mind that you're committing yourself to finishing by July 31st.)

2. Speaking of gen fic still being alive and well, yesterday I recced my seventh hundred SG-1 fic, archived over at [personal profile] figs_sg1_rec. \0/ Go fandom!

3. In Memoria has been nominated for a Gatefic award. My warmest thanks to whomever it was (or were) who thought my story worth nominating. :)

So instead of finishing the angsty ficlet that's been peculating in my mind, I want happy gen drabble prompts from all of you! I'll commit to ten, but the more you give me the better. I'll only do one prompt per person (put them all in a single comment, please), but it's more fun to have the extra variety. Classic team is more likely to get a response than new team, but feel free to leave whatever prompts interest you most.

(We did six months ago -- here are the prompts, and here's the final result.)

MUCH YAY.

C'mon. Go sign up...

(Signups must be made on LJ to prevent multiple claims on the same prompt, but [community profile] sg1friendathon is right here too!)

::waves scepter of the realm of ship-free Stargate meaningfully::

Oh, and Beanpot and Annerb? There are prompts at that list (over 170 of them, whee!) that have your names on them!

So after last week's poll, we went live with [community profile] sg1friendathon! Yay! And I was so excited to spread the word that I, er, forgot to mention it here. Oops, that. :)

Right now, we're still in the looking for prompts stage. Anyone is welcome to submit prompts, even without any intention of joining the ficathon. So if you've got a friendship prompt that you've always wanted to see written, comment at this entry to submit it for inclusion into the ficathon. You can submit as many prompts as you'd like, and the comments are all screened -- the only ones who will know you submitted them are your friendly mods. Prompts can be submitted through Wednesday.

And please do boost the signal! Spread the words through your own journals, whether at LJ or at DW. The more prompts we get, the more likely we are to end up with some really great stories. :)

So these Mitchell drabbles...

First of all, I am very happy to get so many prompts. Thanks, folks! :) It's the first time since I started this impromptu series that I actually get to pick and choose. I hope no one will be offended if I don't choose a particular prompt; it's just a question of what hits, so to speak. I've done nine so far, so I'll be choosing three more to complete the set.

But I am running into a problem.

How do I refer to the guy?

My personal preference is "Mitchell," but I have an unhappy suspicion that it's because I don't actually like the character too much. (One day I will post meta regarding the majority of people who regularly refer to Sam as "Carter.") I don't dislike him, even if his recklessness really gets on my nerves sometimes. I'm just... neutral. Chaotic neutral, from my old D&D days, perhaps. :) But it does mean that I don't entirely trust my judgment. I've been vacillating back and forth. It looks a bit weird.

So I've posted a poll over at LJ. (I have a basic account on DW, so I can't mirror it here, sorry.) If you'd like to help me figure out the best way to refer to Cameron Mitchell, please vote in the poll here, or just comment in this entry. :)

Edit: I certainly wasn't fishing for it, but my warmest thanks to the person who gifted me with points. :D

Yeah, yeah, I know it's the very first SG-1 audiobook and it's nearly three years old. But I listened to it tonight for the first time since I got it, and I never posted it about then, so here we are!

Gift of the Gods is read by Michael Shanks, who does a superb Jack and Sam (his Hammond felt more generic-Texan than George to me) and naturally a rather passable Daniel. ;) Early S3 teamy goodness -- Sam is still Captain -- some very handwaving technobabble, and a very SG-1ish feel. There's another voice actor, playing the part of a major from SG-12.

very vague spoilers )

totally spoilery )

All in all, I liked this one a lot. I've only listened to one other of the Big Finish SG-1 audiobooks, and that one was a lot less enjoyable for me. This one I would strongly recommend to anyone who likes Daniel and Sam and teamy goodness and friendship and sheer determination to do the right thing.

...Although I admit, hearing Daniel say "Goa'uld" with the proper pronunciation is downright weird, heh.

The most bizarre Daniel thought process ficlet has leapt into my mind. A quick question, though, to follow it to its proper conclusion: what's the Atlantis equivalent of the DHD? Similar to the "keyboard" on the Gateship from S8? Can anyone direct me to a picture?

I blame this on Zats. She's so much fun to blame things on... :)

edit: Penknife and Zats came through already, yay!

When we had SG-1 Gen Fic Day a few weeks ago, I also created an entry where crossover flashfics could be submitted as commentfic. Here's the round-up of all the crossover ficlets, arranged in alphabetical order by fandom and posted as is. Some are a few hundred words; two of them are quite long. All gen, all rated G/PG (I think). If the author has posted the fic on her own journal, I've included a link there, too.

Thanks to those who participated!

I wish [info]gate_women would get more traffic, I really do. It's a Stargate comm that emphasizes the women of the Gates, whether it's SG-1, SGA, or even SGU. Gen is usually the default but it is by no means required!

There's a new challenge now at the comm: 11 in 11. Basically, it's a commitment to post 11 times in the next 11 months, throughout the calendar year 2011. Entries can be fic links, recs, meta, picspam, or any combination thereof. It doesn't have to be restricted to a single character or even a single show.

I've just posted my first entry - on Sha're, naturally. :) You'll find it here.

I know there are lots of Sam and Janet and Vala fans who read my posts, so I hope some of you will wander over to Women of the Gate and sign up, too! :)

Item the first: Abyssis pointed me to this absolutely fabulous mock-trailer of SG-1: The Movie which you must go watch right now. It's embedded under the cut.

In other news, it seems that All This Time won a Gatefic award. My thanks to those who nominated and voted. :) And congrats to the other winners, too!

::peeks at internets::

Hmm. Looks relatively unbroken to me... :)

Hi, all of you! I'm here for a couple of days before disappearing again into the ether. Words cannot express the awesomeness that is [info]sg1_debrief on LJ and Paian's roundups on DW that will allow me to catch up on some of what I've missed! I'll try and make a rapid skim of my flist as well, but if you know of something specific that you think I'll enjoy, please drop a link in the comments.

Speaking of awesomeness and DW, my warmest thanks to the lovely anonymous benefactor who gave me twelve months of paid time. I'll take it as a delightful birthday present. :) And I hope to post more fic and meta and general squee, after Sukkos! (That will be earlyish October, BTW.)

And on the subject of early October... we've got SG-1 Gen Fic Day scheduled on Monday, October 4th. I hereby pledge to have at least one fic written for the occasion! I hope there will be others out there to help make the day a success. Don't forget: new fic, links to older fic, drabbles, meta, vids, recs - anything goes, as long as it's gen and related to SG-1.

Gen and SG-1, you say? That must be [community profile] sg1genrecs, which is currently open to gen recs about someone getting snaked - or any other type of gen rec, really. I was kinda hoping to see some good fic recced while I'm gone, but there's a chance to rec something now! I'll try to get a story recced myself before disappearing again on Wednesday.

And since this is the Entry of Segue, I'll add that I should probably get all four of my Sam and Janet friendship recs done for [info]stargateficrec in these few days as well. Go and sign up to rec some favorites of your own, if you want to spread the fic love!

And finally, speaking of fic love... :) Many, many thanks to the person(s) who made my day by nominating All This Time for the Gatefic awards. I am very fond of that story, as it's S8 team (which gets less writing love). It's Daniel-centric in the whumping, plot-line way but Sam-centric in the character focus way. In my old fandom, we'd say Daniel is the A plot and Sam is the B plot.( LnC fans usually put the B plot first, heh. I think ATT is like that, too.) I took a very quick look this morning at the nominees, and saw some stories I haven't read - always a plus! I hope I'll have a chance to read and vote at least in one or two categories before the 25th.

For those of you celebrating the High Holy Days, I hope your Sukkos will be as happy and busy as mine promises to be. :)

I've just made several nominations over at Gatefic, both vids and fic. I don't know how successful these new awards will be, but I do know that active participation will certainly help! :)

The nomination template is relatively simple and you don't have to register. Wander over there, take a look, and if you're so inclined, add a nom or two of your own. Speaking from personal experience -- both my own and what I've seen from others' reactions -- it's a wonderful way to say "thanks" to someone who has created a fanwork that you've enjoyed.

Has anyone noticed the sheer volume of fabulous gen fic we've been getting lately? And that the majority of those stories focus on the women of Stargate? That's because two ficathons, both focusing on women, have gone live at the same time: the Awesome Women ficathon (which is multi-fandom) and [info]gate_women. Yay!

My own contribution to [info]gate_women has just been sent off for its second round of beta. This is because Random is awesome and never lets me get away with being sloppy. :)

I feel positively spoiled: all this great gen fic and Gen Fic Day coming up at the end of next week! July 8th, don't forget. We'll celebrate Daniel's birthday in style, with any and all SG-1 gen fic welcomed and a hearty serving of Team Alphabet Soup!

To quote PoG: I heart fandom. That is all. :)

So back in the fall, I asked for a fic rec icon and [personal profile] samantilles created the lovely one I've used here and have been using regularly at [personal profile] figs_sg1_rec. But while Jack and Daniel are always a pleasure :) I did want something a little more team-centric!

Happily, there is an iconfest running right now (still open through the 26th - go request something!) and when I posted my request, the talented [personal profile] hsapiens gave me not one, but two team icons!

::admires them some more::

And in other news, [info]gate_women fic is due next month, and [info]one_prompt's Breathe prompt goes live on June 1st. The problem is that my Women of the Gate prompt has decided it would be just lovely if it turned into the first of a five things on Sha're. Okay, I can deal with that. Sort of. Talk to [info]rachel500 and find out if I can post early. But nooooo, that wasn't enough! Now the story keeps insisting that I pull the lens back further and further. It's not enough, for example, to deal with Sha're's first day back on Abydos; I have to write about the decision to hide her and Amaunet's history and why Sha're is convinced Daniel is dead...

Look, Sha're, you know I adore you beyond reason and all these five things are parts of your story that I really, really want to write. But I cannot write 6,000+ words (at least) between now and the 30th, okay?

Are you listening?

...Sigh.

I always did say Sha're was a pushy woman. :)

So [personal profile] grav_ity says it's Ascension Day, SG-1 style... which means fic about Ascension and Descension and Ancients. She's got an entire entry full of Ascension-related recs and she's looking for more. So why not wander over there and take a look? :)

We had a new SG-1 Gen Fic Day this month, including Jonas Alphabet Soup - my contribution was X is for X-Files, a Sam and Jonas friendship piece. I also wrote Shake Vigorously for Best Results, which is teamy goodness and Sam pwnage with bonus Hammond included.

Other fandom highlights include redial_the_gate starting our Season Seven rewatch! If you're not watching the comm, go take a look at [personal profile] zorb's hilarious recap and browse the rest of Redial - it's a lot of fun. Speaking as a totally non-prejudiced mod, of course. ;)

Since this last month included Pesach, I only recced the single category of Team over at [info]stargateficrec. Links are to the recs at [personal profile] figs_sg1_rec; the master list of the rec archive is actually up to date. 575 recs, whee!

Team recs )

In other gen rec news, [community profile] sg1genrecs is currently looking for apocafic recs. I have a few fics to rec, but apocafic has never been a real favorite of mine, so any contributors would be greatly appreciated.

::insert regular encouragement to sign up to rec here:: <-- I'm claiming Teal'c and Daniel friendship and Jonas next month. No, Jonas is not cheating! I have 6 or 7 recs even without Soup fics. :) But why not choose a favorite category of yours, and spread some fic love? (And I mean that however you want to take it, heh.)

It's a real pleasure to spread the word about a ficathon that basically says, Stargate women are awesome! :)

[info]gate_women has just gone live with signups for this year's challenge. There are prompts for women from SG-1, SGA, and SGU. Both artwork and fic are welcomed, and fics have no minimum word count. Gen is encouraged but not required, and there's lots of time to work on your prompt - submission dates are the last week of June.

The theme of the ficathon is firsts, and there are lots and lots of prompts available! You're even allowed to claim a prompt that someone else has already claimed if you're particular to a certain idea. I have personally snagged a pre-series Sha'uri prompt. Anyone surprised by that? ;)

::listens to chirping of crickets::

Seriously, anything that encourages more fanworks about the marvelous women of Stargate deserves wholehearted support. So please help boost the signal by posting about it on your own journals, and I hope that lots of you will sign up to participate!

Prompt List for Author/Artist Sign Up

[info]danjanficathon is now doing signups through January 30th. Yes, it's technically geared towards ship, but friendship fics are welcome, too. I will add that my best fic ever (in my own opinion, anyway) was written for [info]sd_ficathon, which was also ship or friendship, so don't let a lack of interest in the pairing keep you from signing up!

Still considering whether or not I want to join myself; I do want to tackle Stargate Summer this year. Maybe. They've reduced the word minimum to 25,000, which is a lot more doable. I'm just... hm. We'll see.

Just finished a translation sample for the kind of client that makes you cringe, but hey, who can turn down work these days?

So with the bad taste out of my mouth, I need a happier distraction! Prompt me with icons for SG-1 gen ficlets, seasons 1-8. I'll take the first five - maybe more, depending on my whim. (I can have whims!) To keep track of who posts first, please stake your claim over at LJ. (If you don't have an account there, point me to an URL.)

Also, I want to boost the signal for [info]gate_women. They're having a ficathon (art included) that emphasizes the women of Stargate - with gen as a preference, so the shipping doesn't distract from the women's awesomeness! Of course I'm going to like something like that. :) The theme this time is "firsts." They're looking for prompts right now, so go and contribute!

And if nobody takes my Sha'uri prompt, I'll probably claim it myself, heh.
